2015 Season OutlookLast season the Pioneers embarked on a 9-2 campaign and made the NAIA playoffs, before falling to the eventual national champions, Southern Oregon University in the first round. It was a great debut season for new head coach Brian Willmer, who orchestrated upsets of #7 Missouri Valley, #2 Baker, and a HAAC title clinching victory over #20 Benedictine. Coming of a 5-5 season, and under new leadership the Pioneers clearly exceeded the expectations set for them last year by taking down the “big three” of the HAAC and winning the HAAC title and a #9 national ranking. The Pioneers aren’t a secret anymore and with 2013 National Champion Grandview and #19 William Penn coming into the HAAC this year, it’s going to be a challenge for the Pioneers to hold the top spot in the HAAC.

OffenseMNU lost 8 seniors on offense including All-HAAC OL #74 Andrew Chavoya & #73 Jose Carrillo-Ayala, and All-HAAC WR Chris Fields. The Pioneers are returning the HAAC Offensive Player of the Year in RB #28 Javon Taylor, and All-HAAC WRs #88 Bo Miller, #85 Wesley Foryoh, and #10 Deron Kirkwood. The offensive line is a question mark but with #77 C Hunter Groeneveld, #72 T AJ Wade, and #51 T Lafaele Paselio, the offensive line is the secret weapon to the upcoming 2015 Pioneer season. With All-HAAC QB #12 Trent Hedlund returning, and along with a talented core such as #20 RB Drake Tofi, and All-American K #36 Cristian Casillas, and coupled with a talented recruiting class coming in, the Pioneers are retooling for another HAAC championship run.

DefenseMNU lost two key members of the arguably the most talented defensive line in the nation in #52 Demarco Kemp and #44 Mason Mathews. Losing 6 seniors in total on defense including LB #1 Justin Vargas, and PR/CB #7 DeRahn Williams, the Pioneer defense was ranked in the top 10 nationally in 2014 and the pressure is on Coach Willmer and his coaching staff to back up that ranking. The defense returns All-HAAC honorees S #23 Derek Pollox, CB #6 Markeith Cooper, DB #3 Dimitrios Finney, DE #97 Jared Bader, S #22 Tanner Hamilton, and DL #56 Matt Rashad. Along with All-HAAC P #4 Patrick Corrigan, the MNU defense is ready to dominate the HAAC once again.

Head Coach

Brian Willmer Coach Willmer came to MNU last year, and he hit the ground running. In his inaugural season as the MNU head coach, he orchestrated the upsets of Missouri Valley, Baker, and a thrilling victory over Benedictine. He far surpassed expectations and molded a feisty Pioneer squad filled with 14 All-HAAC honorees, and an All-American to the HAAC title in 2014. It is safe to say that Coach Willmer has the MNU faithful excited for the 2015, as Pioneers prepare to defend their standing on top of the HAAC Conference.

A four year letterman at UCLA from 1994-97, and the senior captain of the 1997 team, Coach Willmer was the Bruins top linebacker in 1996 and 1997. During both years he lead the team in tackles (and sacked Peyton Manning in 1997.) He was a two-time Honorable Mention All-Pac 10 linebacker. Managers GaloreMNU football couldn’t run without its faithful managers. Working directly under Coach Fields, Steven Kingslover, Brian Cupp, and Tony DeWeese worked above and beyond what was expected from them. Doing a lot of their work behind the scenes, no one really knows what they do or how much time they actually put into the 2014 season. Usually coming in extremely early making sure everything is ready to go and staying late making sure that everyone equipment is up to standard, and taking care of the whole team’s laundry is clean and ready for the next day. Their passion for the game, their commitment to the team, and their willingness to sacrifice their free time to make sure the 2014 season was a success for the Pioneers.

“One Team,One Family,

One Mission!”
