Pinhole photography has it's roots in middle 19th century, in the timeof the discovery of photography.Pinhole photography is lens-less photography.

Sir David Brewster, a Scottish scientist, was one of the first to makepinhole photographs, in the 1850s. He also coined the very word"pinhole", or "pin-hole" with a hyphen, which he used in his book'The Stereoscope', published in 1856. Joseph Petzval used the term"natural camera" in 1859, whereas Dehors and Deslandres, in thelate 1880s, proposed the term stenopaic photography.

Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with greatcare. Cameras have been made of sea shells, many have been madeof oatmeal boxes, coke cans or cookie containers. Cameras havebeen cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautifulhardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiplepinholes. Station wagons have been used as pinhole cameras - androoms in large buildings.

Principle of a pinhole camera: l ight raysf rom an object pass through a small

hole to form an inver ted image.

A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single smallaperture - effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side.Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects on thephotosensitive material (film or photo paper) an inverted image on theopposite side of the box.The human eye in bright light acts similarly, as do cameras using smallapertures.

Pinhole cameras can be handmade by the photographer. In itssimplest form, the photographic pinhole camera can consist of alight-tight box with a pinhole in one end, and a piece of film orphotographic paper wedged or taped into the other end.A flap of cardboard with a tape hinge can be used as a shutter. The pinhole may be punched or drilled using a sewing needle orsmall diameter bit through a piece of tinfoil or thin aluminum orbrass sheet. This piece is then taped to the inside of the lighttight box behind a hole cut through the box.

Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images withcameras you have made yourself is a great pleasure, too.The pinhole camera is an imaging device with its advantages andlimitations, special characteristics and potentials.

By making the best of the camera's potential, great images can beproduced. Some of the pinhole images could not have been produced with a lens.Up to a certain point, the smaller the hole of the camera, the sharper theimage, but the dimmer the projected image.Because a pinhole camera requires a lengthy exposure, its shutter may bemanually operated, as with a flap of light-proof material to cover anduncover the pinhole.Typical exposures range from 2-3 seconds to several hours. Moving the filmcloser to the pinhole will result in a wide angle field of view and a shorterexposure time. Moving the film farther away from the pinhole will result in atelephoto or narrow angle view and a longer exposure time.

Pinhole photographs characteristically are softly focused overall fromimmediately in front of the camera to the farthest distance and create oftena (slightly) distorted image. Photographers use this technique for i tsaesthetic appearance that can 'transform' reality than rather record it.
