VOCATIONAL LUNCH
AT
SITE OF YOUR CHOICE
It’s time again to plan for one of our Member’s most favorite programs: the
vocational luncheon. This is the one Thursday Rotary lunch that is NOT held at the
Ortiz Center. Instead, each member has the opportunity to select from one of the host
sites, whose program topic is selected by the Rotarian host business.

Charlie Jackson’s resolution was read and Rotarians
stood in a moment of silence to honor our long-time Club member. Carol Jackson and family were in
attendance.

The inaugural Club Social event was held at
Harrison’s Landing Tavern on the Bay
located at the Peoples Street T-head. It was a
great networking opportunity and time to
relax and get to know fellow Rotarians.
The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle event
experienced another successful year as we
helped raise $5,132.45. That was almost
$2,000 more than the previous year. The
team at Sam’s Club, led by Turner Moller,
raised more than half of the total money
collected.
The Holiday Program was as fun as ever and
successfully collected items for the children
at Bokenkamp Children’s Shelter as well as
$950 in cash and checks.
Special programs this year included: Eric
Ray on the research and recovery of the La
Belle Shipwreck in Matagorda Bay; Fred
Segundo, Director of Aviation at Corpus
Christi International Airport; Tom Schmid,
Texas State Aquarium; Troy Riggs former
Chief of Police and then Assistant City
Manager.
The Club continued its support of Polio
Plus. Excerpts from Bill Gates’ Annual
Letter Regarding Polio:
… At the start of 2011, poliovirus was
still spreading in three areas: 10
countries in Africa (with viruses that
originated primarily in Nigeria),
Afghanistan and Pakistan, and India.
Now India has reached a huge
milestone. …On January 13, 2012,
India celebrated its first year of being
polio free. The challenge in India was
mind-boggling. It’s hard to imagine
how you would design a polio
campaign that reached every Indian
child. More than a billion people live
in the country…..The Indian
government deserves special credit for
this achievement. It will be challenging
to continue raising the approximately
$1 billion per year it takes to run the
The History of Rotary Club
of Corpus Christi
Compiled by Debra Bruce from records in the Rotary Club Office
2011-2012 President Bea Hanson
passed the gavel and the official
President’s pin to President Richard
Bonner at the July 7th 2011 meeting.
Richard embraced the year with the RI
theme “Reach Within to Embrace
Humanity” with RI President Kalyan
Banerjee and District Governor Lauro
Solis. In closing out the previous year,
the Club recognized Crystal Mead with
the Spirit of Rotary and Mary McQueen
the Rotarian of the Year awards.
The Club travelled to other sites for
meetings this year including the Craft
Training Center of the Coastal Bend to
see the new training facility first hand.
In November we once again set up at the
Food Bank of Corpus Christi to fill
boxes with food for the Thanksgiving
Holiday. Bea Hanson, Executive
Director of the Food Bank wrote:
“Service above Self was evident
last night as 90 Rotarians, friends
& family came together to pack
Thanksgiving boxes. The special
boxes are being distributed by
pantries in the eleven counties
that the Food Bank serves. This
year’s volunteers matched last
year’s record; they packed 1,000
boxes in just about 2 hours. As
we say at RYLA, Wonderful,
Terrific, F-A-N-TA-S-T-I-C.”
The Club continued to support and
promote the Adoption Awareness Picnic,
Shots Across Texas, RYLA, High
School Students, and Adopt-A-School
(Driscoll Middle School) Recognition.
The City of Corpus Christi welcomed
new City Manager Ron Olson who
spoke to the Club about the
reorganization of some of the City
departments which Olson said were
needed to restore accountability, team
work and trust issues.

global campaign. …Rotary continues to be the heart and soul
of polio eradication, supporting
the program directly while also
taking on a larger role in
encouraging other donors to give
more. … These are enormous
obstacles, but the success of the
polio eradication program in
(several)... countries gives me
confidence that we can triumph
...and end polio once and for all.
Hurricane Alley Waterpark opened next
to Whataburger Field.
The Club added a Facebook page to
help stay in touch and promote the good
things Rotary does both here and
abroad.
That year, we bid farewell to Rotarians
Bob Conwell, Ben Meadows, Erich
Wendl and John “Jocko” Taylor.
VOCATIONAL LUNCHEON SIGN-UP ~ MAY 21, 2015
Guest Speakers received a jar of
pickles. Can you say it?
Richard Bonner successfully did it
every week!
“This pint of pickles was packed by
pickle-packing Rotarians at the
epicenter of pickle packing on the
coastal plains, Taft, Texas where they
pack pickles and pecks of pickled
peppers daily for pleasure and profit.”
