Jerry and Debbie Black Couple Takes Over Father’s Business After Health Decline Jerry Black and Debbie Black, both 46, began working for Pillar To Post Home Inspectors of Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 2001 with Debbie’s father. Serving middle Tennessee, the couple took over responsibilies for the business in November 2003 when Debbie’s father fell ill, transioning to owners in April 2011. Being parents of two children of their own, they had a tough decision to make with the absence of the business’ original owner. But, said Debbie, it was a decision that they knew would help cement a future for their kids. “Going to work for your father usually isn’t something most people would recommend,” said Debbie. “But it didn’t take long to realize that this was where we needed to be. Just two years into our journey, my father had five bypasses and an open heart surgery, bringing his days of inspecng to an end. But we persevered: Jerry took over the inspector train- ing dues and I, as office manager, began taking over the day-to-day operaons.” “We contemplated moving on,” said Debbie. “We believed in what we were doing and knew there was something greater coming soon. As we emerged from the recession we purchased the franchise from my father and posioned ourselves to grow. Growing, it turned out, is exactly what we did and what we have been doing steadily since 2011.” Over the next few years the couple saw both great mes and bad. Those were mes, she said, when they weren’t sure what was going to happen next.

Couple Takes Over Father’s Business After Health Decline

Jerry Black and Debbie Black, both 46, began working for Pillar To Post Home Inspectors of Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 2001 with Debbie’s father. Serving middle Tennessee, the couple took over responsibilities for the business in November 2003 when Debbie’s father fell ill, transitioning to owners in April 2011.

Just two years into our journey, my father had five bypasses and an open heart surgery, bringing his days of inspecting to an end. But we persevered: Jerry took over the inspector train-ing duties and I, as office manager, began taking over the day-to-day operations.”

“We contemplated moving on,” said Debbie. “We believed in what we were doing and knew there was something greater coming soon. As we emerged from the recession we purchased the franchise from my father and positioned ourselves to grow. Growing, it turned out, is exactly what we did and what we have been doing steadily since 2011.”

Over the next few years the couple saw both great times and bad. Those were times, she said, when they weren’t sure what was going to happen next.

Providing services that include radon, mold and indoor air quality inspections in addition to conventional home inspections, the couple is building a business they hope to leave to their children, continuing the family tradition.

“Knowing that when we go to sleep at night we can say we helped someone is one of the best feelings a one can have,” said Debbie. “Purchasing a home is the single most costly investment a person can make. Our goal is to help our clients make that informed decision with peace of mind, knowing they have all the information to determine their next step. Looking forward, our market is predicted to double in population within the next 10 years. It is exciting to know that we are positioning our company to be there for our children, years down the road.”
