FROM

THE

RAB

BI’S

DES

K DEAR BETH ZIOn FAMIly,

A funny thing happened when I turned West on the 40: I kept looking back East towards Montreal. While I have returned many times since I moved in August for unveilings, Bat Mitzvahs, and other

S’machot, I miss Beth Zion Congregation. Beth Zion has a unique flavour that is hard to describe. “Heimish” may be the right word. “Without airs,” may be another way to describe the atmosphere. For me, the word that describes BZ best is “comfortable.” A place where you feel at home and are amongst friends. Some friends we see each day, others weekly, some occasionally and finally there are good friends that we only see once a year, but that doesn’t diminish the bonds of friendship. What I enjoy the most about the High Holidays is how I can reconnect with people whom I haven’t seen in a while and pick-up where our conversation left off a year ago. This is friendship, and it is what I enjoy most about Beth Zion Congregation.

It is an honour that I have been asked back to officiate once again this year. For Raizie and me it’s coming home - and that’s a good feeling.

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur have different meanings and memories for every person. I will never forget my Grandma Hanna’s kneidlach, which were as hard as golf balls or my Grandma Fanny’s delicious brisket. Beyond the gastronomic, my best memories of these days are from when I lived in Israel and the High Holiday flavour

permeated the atmosphere weeks before the days actually arrived. I would walk the streets of Jerusalem and hear Shofars being sounded as people practiced for the big day. The market stalls were full of honey, special fruits, and round Challahs in anticipation. In my Yeshiva, the Rabbis would teach special classes helping us focus on how to grow spiritually during this time of year. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur were more than three days on the calendar, it was an entire season, and we felt it.

Montreal is not Jerusalem, none-the-less we can all prepare for the high holidays. What type of year did we have last year? How was our health? Our family’s health? What do we have to thankful for? What do we regret that we want to change during the new year? What worked well last year that we want to retain and improve upon? Am I a good husband, wife, parent, sibling, grandparent? Each of us can add to this list and identify what they want to reflect upon; whatever helps all try to prepare in our own way for the holidays.

On behalf of Raizie and myself, I want to wish everyone a Shana Tova U’Metuka – a Sweet and Happy New Year. A year of blessing, health and success. A year when our prayers will be answered for good.

Shana Tova,

Rabbi Boruch Perton

I can’t believe that a year has passed since I wrote my last Rosh Hashana Pillar article. Before I reflect on what we have accomplished over the last 6 months and what we have to look forward

to in the future, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Officers and Board Members who have generously donated and donate their time to Beth Zion. A strong shul is supported by strong volunteers. I encourage everyone to stay involved and encourage others to help. I would like to especially thank Margret Ronis, who served as the secretary of Beth Zion for the last 8 years. I have worked side by side with her for many years. The team of Officers and I will greatly miss her honesty, diligence and devotion to her role.

This past June, we held our 12th annual whisky tasting fundraiser evening. The event raised over $20,000 for your youth programming, up over 25% from the previous year. The committee worked extremely hard which is clearly reflected in the exceptional results. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next year.

The lay leaders of Beth Zion have worked extremely hard over the last 1.5 years to modernize our banquet hall and implement a new strategy. We felt that the current structure was preventing many members from holding their special events at Beth

Zion. Therefore I am proud to announce that we have partnered with Becky Bendayan, a prominent party planner in Montreal, and our hall is now open to the caterer of your choice. For your convenience, we will still be offering the option of fixed menus for your events.

I am also excited to announce a special partnership with NCSY. This partnership will strengthen our much needed teen programing. To date, we have started a special chessed project for boys, at Beth Zion. The program is called Live2Give. The program takes place weekly, giving teens the opportunity to receive their volunteer hours all while giving back to the community. This Rosh Hashana the youth lounge will be open for teens to come and hang out, discuss interesting topics and enjoy a candy apple bar.

Lastly, I would like to thank the leaders and members of the Cantorial Concert committee. This is Beth Zion’s largest fundraiser and something you can be proud to be a part of. I would also like to thank the Rossdeutscher families for their continued and generous support. Without them, this concert would not come to fruition. If you have not yet bought tickets, I encourage you to do so ASAP!!!

Shana Tova and Gmar Chatima Tova!!!

I am very excited for this opportunity to share with my Beth Zion family how I feel.

This year passed by so quickly. The changes at the Beth Zion kids program have been

remarkable!

Every Shabbat when I walk in to the tots’ room on the lower level of the shul, and see them playing, sitting at the table and listening to a story, singing the “Tefila” songs, participating or laughing at a puppet joke- it warms my heart. What an amazing feeling it is! I truly recommend you come and take a peek! It’s incredible to see how much our BZ kids family has grown. I remember being able to count on my fingers the kids that showed up. Now, BH, I need to smile and introduce myself to new faces every Shabbat. We have tripled the amount of kids every Shabbat!

Every “Shabbat Mevarchim,” the kids get to open their little personal bags which have tickets inside. The kids earn them by participating, helping with clean up and saying a “bracha” and “tefila” out loud.

Danielle and Jordana, our spectacular counselors who have been doing such an incredible job this past year, help the kids

choose and pick the prizes. The kids leave with big smiles on their faces, feeling that they have accomplished something and have been rewarded.

The library section is one of the kids’ favorite parts of the room. The little ones especially love the reading activity. It is beautiful to see moms and dads choosing a book and bonding with their child with some reading time.

We are looking forward to some new exciting events! We will be having another Women’s paint night as well as a special “My Little Siddur” event for the kids. Details will be sent by email closer to the events. We welcome your feedback and suggestions with regards to activities of interest.

Once again it is such a pleasure to be part of this community.

Wishing you all a

שנה טובה ומתוקה

CUTI

IREC

TOR Having survived a very

hot summer, we now move forward into the fall season.

We are in midst of refurbishing the Spector Auditorium. We have demolished the parquet

floor and carpeting. We have replaced it with a beautiful floor. We will be painting the auditorium. We are also refurbishing the entrance doors to the Albert Spector auditorium. As we will no longer have an exclusive caterer, we are going to be rebranding our Hall Rental division. As part of the rebranding, we are purchasing tablecloths, cutlery, glassware, chairs etc. We have hired Becky Bendayan who will be marketing and selling our rebranded Hall. More details to follow.

We have carpeted the exterior stairs. We are updating the terrazzo in the hallways as it has not been professionally cleaned and waxed in a few years.

In May, we initiated a Sephardi Minyan on shabbat in the Britton boardroom. When the youth minyan went on hiatus, they started using the Granofsky Chapel.

We had a very successful Scotch tasting this past June. We thank our chairman Daniel Shaul and his committee. Yashir Koach!

We have hired Cantor David Sebbag who will be leading services twice a month for the next year.

We are looking to modernize some of our air conditioning units so that they will be more energy efficient.

The cantorial concert on October 6 will be featuring the following cantors, Danny Benlolo, Boaz Davidoff, Netanel Ilovitzky and Yakov Rubin. They will be accompanied by Musical Director, Yossi Milo, Steven Abadi, Istvan Lakatos, Alexandru Sura and Yakov Rubin`s son, Ishai. We thank our co – chairs, Irving Leiner and Joe Presser in advance. I am looking forward to seeing you there.

NCSY has joined our ranks. They will be helping us in our programming.

I wish the Rabbi & Raizie hatzlacha as they have moved to Ottawa for the Rabbi to take up his position as head of school at Torah Day School of Ottawa. It has been a pleasure working with the Rabbi & Raizie over the past 2 and half years. They will be back with us for the High Holidays and at other points.

I would personally like to thank Roz Agulnik, Myrna Halickman and Sylvia Yarin for volunteering their time to make calls and help out with office tasks. May they be blessed with health and longevity.

On a personal note, I would like to let you all know that my daughter Shayna got engaged this past summer to David Sacks. The wedding will take place in 2020. My daughter Joni and her husband Eric are expecting their first child in December. May both smachot take place in a mazeldika sha.

On behalf of my wife Jewel, Mitchell, Joni & Eric, Shayna and Aviva, I wish you Shana Tova U’Metuka – a sweet and fruitful 5780 and a Ktiva veChatima Tova!

May you all be blessed with health, happiness and prosperity.
