8th GradeRegistration2014-2015
What is different from 7th grade?
Your course selections will have a huge bearing on the track you will take for high school
You do not have to have P.E. or athletics
You will have 4 electivesYou can start earning high school
credit
What is important to consider?
You need to take a challenging curriculum to help you become college ready
If you take some high school credit classes as an 8th grader, then you will have more spots in high school for things like an academy, sports, and other electives
Algebra I and Spanish I grades are factored in your high school GPA
How do I choose my classes?
All pre-AP courses require a parent signature
Language Arts:-Signatures are required for GT and Pre-AP-Summer reading is required for Pre-AP & GT Language Arts
Math:-8th grade Algebra I math pathway is continued from 7th grade Pre-AP math
Athletics
A physical is required in order to participate each year
You MUST get Coach Shilling or Coach King’s signature to get into 8th grade Athletics
You can try out for any competitive sports, but must try out for at least two:Boys: football, basketball, cross country,
track, tennis and soccer.Girls: volleyball, basketball, cross
country, track, tennis and soccer.You will participate in off season if you
are not on a competitive sports team.
High school elective information
Communication Applications (Speech) is required for all students to graduate high school
If you register for Comm. Appl., then you have to register for Health because each class is only 1 semester long
It is HIGHLY recommended to take Comm Apps/Health as an 8th grader
Most students are required to have 2 foreign language credits to graduate so you can enroll in Spanish I at Pike then you will only have to take one more year at the high school
Electives Continued
You can choose 4 electives as an 8th grader – on your registration form you need to # your choices, i.e. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 & 8 in the order of your preference – 1 being your top choice
You will need approval for: Athletics, One Act Play, Choir, Band, and Orchestra.
Applications Are Required
If you are interested in Peer Mediation, you will need to fill out an application, and to get a letter of recommendation from someone who is not a current teacher or your parent
You must also fill out an application for: -yearbook
-media tech -office
-counselor-library aide
Finally…
Registration forms must have appropriate signatures on March 28th.
All registration forms and applications (peer mediator, counselor, office aide, etc.) need to be turned in by March 28th.
