training in America.

Working within our two-t ime OBIE Award-winningensemble’s core creative tenets - physicalcharacter work and actor-generated playmaking -Pig Iron has instructed hundreds of performers incol leges and universit ies, and in our own pro-fessional workshop series.

Drawing on our r ich knowledge of contemporaryDrawing on our r ich knowledge of contemporarydance, clowning, mime, and music, we chal lenge our students to unlock theatre’s creative potential by moving beyond famil iar sett ings into shared imaginative worlds .

When work ing on the C lown, par t i c ipan ts w i l l bu i ld on th is neu t ra l p resence and w i l l work to d iscover the i r own persona l c lown. Wi th l i t t l e e lse bu t a red nose , these c lowns become acu te ly aware o f the i r env i ron-these c lowns become acu te ly aware o f the i r env i ron-ment , o f the i r re la t ionsh ip w i th the aud ience and o f the i r own par t i cu la r sense o f humor. The workshop conc ludes w i th p resenta t ions o f c lown “numbers , ” deve loped in c lown fami l ies and in consu l ta t ion w i th the workshop leaders .

Th is workshop takes i t s lead f rom Jacques Lecoq 's research in to me lodrama, fus ing mus ic , movement , nar ra t ion and drama in o rder to make an aud ience c ry.

Wi th me lodrama, the goa l i s to s tage s to r ies in such a way tha t they move an aud ience emot iona l l y, indu lg ing in sadness and sen t imen-ta l i tta l i t y. Exp lo r ing themes o f innocence, revenge, jea lousy and se l f -sacr i f i ce (among o thers ) , th is workshop w i l l a l low s tudents to tap in to the i r own en joyment o f sweep ing nos ta lg ia and to t ry to f i l l - as Lecoq pu t i t - “Les Grands Jes tes . ”

The Ensemble P laymak ing workshop w i l l focus on P ig I ron ’s t r ied-and-t rue p laymak ing methods . Par t i c ipan ts w i l l be g iven per fo rmance ass ignments – themes, s to r ies , charac te rs , a p iece o f mus ic – wh ich must be so lved as an ensemble . The p laywr i t ing and d i rec t ing du t ies w i l lmus t be so lved as an ensemble . Th is work -shop emphas izes the genera t ing o f o r ig ina l mater ia l , the phys ica l i za t ion o f charac te rs and thea t r i ca l ideas and the s t ruc tu r ing o f g roup improv isa t ions in to f in ished p ieces .

SHAKESPEARE AND MASK PERFORMANCE

The Shakespeare and Mask Workshop w i l l focus on f ind ing a new thea t r i ca l language to per fo rm Shakespeare ’s works . S tudents w i l l be work ing w i th masks o f the Commedia de l l ’A r te and f rom the Ba l inese d ramat ic t rad i t ion , f ree ing up the per fo rmer to f ind a new way o f work ing on Shakespeare ’s charac te rs and language. The workshop ’sapproach w i l l be to t ra in the workshop par t i c ipan ts in mask techn ique , approach w i l l be to t ra in the workshop par t i c ipan ts in mask techn ique , a t ra in ing tha t invo lves movement d isc ip l ine , phys ica l approaches to charac te r, c lown, and wear ing the mask in o rder to b rea the l i fe in to i t .

Par t i c ipan ts w i l l engage each o ther in improv isa t iona l sess ions where the mask techn ique i s pu t to use . G iven Shakespearean tex ts , s tu -dents w i l l t r y to per fo rm the scenes w i th no words ; o r they see i f we can hear the tex t in a new way when a charac te r i s masked. U l t imate ly, workshop par t i c ipan ts w i l l work in smal l ensembles to deve lop a workshop par t i c ipan ts w i l l work in smal l ensembles to deve lop a Shakespeare scene us ing the techn iques worked on in the in i t ia l phases o f the workshop.
