“Pierre-Marie Brisson’s works are instinct with contemporaneity and concinnity and, at the same time, antiquity and olden times. They are innovative and unordinary; having said that, in form and content alike they take you back to the virginal, primeval,” says Robert Flynn Johnson, the curator in charge of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, noting: “His paintings, drawings, and engravings, as the best specimens of po-etry, cinematography, and art, rather pose than answer questions”.

Brisson himself has this to say: “What’s central to my works is the shape of a person, or what’s left of that shape — for it can become something else”.

Pierre-Marie Brisson (1955, Orléans, France) is a contemporary artist, an author of paintings, graphic works, and engravings. Resides and works in France. Pierre-Marie Brisson was born and grew up in a family of farmers, not far from Orléans, in the center of France. It was back in his childhood that he evinced an interest for archeology, the history of ancient civilizations, and their culture. While travelling across Italy, he developed a special penchant for the art of the Etruscans, an ancient civilization that inhabited the Appenin Peninsula three millennia ago. Their culture preceded the Roman and, according to historians, had a major influence on it. The artist recalls how, while looking over the still standing “cities of the dead” left behind by the Etruscans, he was especially astounded by murals adorning the walls of tombs carved into the rock. The impressions he received at that time had a major im-pact on Brisson as an artist. Etruscan painting has a lot in common with vase painting: the orna-ment, the space-filling background, the shapes of humans set off by lines and color, the themes that take you back to mythology. Brisson’s painting reminds the viewer of ancient murals not only because of those obscure matte, as if faded, tones and the use of elements of ornamental painting. Characters in his paintings, done in a simplified yet subtle manner, evoke associations with protagonists of ancient legends and creatures from myths, while the surface itself is un-even, covered with creases and crevices, as if touched by time.

Pierre-Marie Brisson began to draw at 14. In 1972, he met artist Bernard Saby, famous for his experiments with form and color, and the latter would go on to promote and back him up. 1978 saw Brisson’s first exhibition — held at the Charles Péguy Museum in Orléans, and in 1980 he was exhibited in New York. Starting from 1981, his works were displayed by museums and gal-leries in France and Germany, Sweden and Japan, Canada and the US — Pierre-Marie Brisson gained popularity and recognition.
