Letter From The Chairman
Welcome AFS Piedmont chapter members and friends!
2017, Wow a New Year and a new direction for the Foundry industry. I want thank everyone for
making the Athens meeting such a success. Participation was great! We had several members from
the TN and Birmingham chapter in attendance and we always appreciate them making the trip to
join our meetings. Please save the date for the AFS Regional meeting March 22-24 at Dollywood’s
DreamMore Resort, Pigeon Forge, TN (meeting notice attached in this Shakeout). In Athens,
Foundry attendees had a unique opportunity to track their own progress toward Silica regulations as
well as get the first indications as to what to expect from OSHA compliance assistance representa-
tives in their region. Our plant tour of TACG diecast and assembly operations went extremely well.
Thank you to Matt Cribbs- TICA for making the arrangements and Randy Mincey – TACG and his
team for their hospitality to allow our 60 visitors to tour TACG facilities. We want to give a special
thanks to Stephanie Salmon-VP Government Affairs AFS for making the trip from Washington, DC
to update our chapter on status of these regulations as we wait for the new Administration to weigh
in on the stringent regulations.
Next up is our annual VT Fire meeting, March 1-2. Jeremy McLimans has worked with Mattie
LaPrade to arranged a full line up of student presenters. This is a great opportunity for the student to
brag a little on the success they have had with National Competitions while allowing Piedmont
Chapter members to get an update as to why VT Fire is recognized nationally as a premier AFS Stu-
dent Chapter and contributor to the future of our industry. In the afternoon, VT will be staging Ca-
reer Fair. This will allow students an opportunity to interact with specific foundry and industry rep-
resentatives to showcase their resume’ and dedication to their future. If your company has not been
contacted and you wish to participate in interviewing students, please contact Mattie LaPrade – AFS
Student Chairman ([email protected]).
This meeting also will recognize and thank all AFS Piedmont Past Chairman for their service and
dedication to the Piedmont Chapter. If you are a past chairman, you should be receiving an email
invitation. Please respond back to Jeremy as soon as possible with your confirmation and shirt size.
This year the Piedmont annual May Outing will be held in Savannah, GA (May 18-19). You will be
receiving the notice for our Captains choice and Roy Eggleston Memorial Tournament shortly.
Mike Looby has put together a really nice meeting venue that requires confirmation of attendance
and filing the limited number of golf spaces. Please respond as soon as possible to insure your spot
if you plan to play golf.
I want to thank all our members and friends for your participation this year. It’s not too late to sign
up as a 2017 AFS Corporate Member. All the new regulations from Silica to dust collector/
ventilation seem to be re-uniting our members and industry to secure the future. As Stephanie Salm-
on reiterated, Corporate participation makes a strong statement to our Washington representatives
and encourages the attention we require to survive. Safe travels and I look forward to seeing eve-
ryone in Blacksburg!

Piedmont Chapter Education Report
February 2017 “Progress through Education”
By: Paul Huffman, Education Co-Chairman
As many are aware, our Adam Humphrys, Education Co-Chairman
March meeting has been moved to March 1st and 2nd of 2017. Please mark these dates on your calen-
dar and try to attend this informative meeting. We will be awarding a record number of college scholarships
and expect to see a large student turnout. If any of you are considering hiring summer interns there is no bet-
ter time to meet and interview VT Fire students.
For members in good standing with a high school senior planning to attend college look for our Pied-
mont Chapter High School scholarship application in our April newsletter.
VT FIRE, Student Updates and Outreach
Our VT Fire students continue to use one of our Chapter’s Foundry in a Box to demonstrate and create
excitement for our industry. This month we demonstrated to over 150 high school students. Some students
took advantage of additional class time to cast more than our typical molds by using Lego pieces as patterns.
The quality was such that these actually fit into the plastic ones! As part of this experience our students pre-
sented “What is Metal Casting” and talked to the high school students about career opportunities of many
types in our industry.
As you can see in our upcoming meeting notice, our VT Fire students will present updates on the Va
Tech Student Chapter, recent Casting Competitions, Senior Design as well as the Foundry in a Box. Be sure
to allocate time to attend these sessions to see why the Va tech program is gaining national recognition as one
of the top metal casting programs in North America.
During the afternoon we will be conducting our very first Va Tech Career Fair. If your organization
has any current or future interest in utilizing the talent from this program, be sure to stop by. Graduating sen-
iors as well as underclassmen looking for internships will be there.
Our spring semester Foundry Open House is scheduled for Saturday, April 1. This every semester
event is run by students and combines a discussion of metal castings as well as a hands-on foundry event.
These Open Houses continue to grow in popularity and attracts students and non-students for a very fun and
informative day. No reservations are needed so if you are in the area just stop by.
Jordan Seibert talks about our industry to a group of high school students while others produce their own green sand molds.

Student Spotlight
Our student spotlight this newsletter is Bryan Staha. Bryan is slated to become our 2017/2018 student
AFS Chairman. As a freshman engineering student, Bryan is developing his collegiate resume. In high school
he graduated 2nd out of a class size of 321 while attending his regional Governor’s School in Hampton, Va. He
also was on the Debate Team which took 1st place honors at the Virginia High School League state champion-
ships.
During his junior and senior years, Bryan worked a mentorship at Newport News Shipbuilding. Work-
ing in their Materials Testing Lab, he focused on hardness testing. At VT, Bryan has been active in the AFS
Student Chapter and is a member of the Human Powered Submarine Design Team.
Bryan is An Eagle Scout, enjoys sailing and I understand was quite the trumpet player in high school.
Be sure to look Bryan up during our March meeting in Blacksburg!
