Activity
Objective: Students will compose a newspaper article or editorial composition about the dedication of the Robert Shaw Memorial on May 31, 1897
Students can complete this lesson in a small group or individually.
1. Distribute primary sources to students. Primary sources include original press coverage of the Attack on Fort Wagner, the casualty list of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment from the assault on Fort Wagner, newspaper clippings from the week before the dedication, and an excerpt of William Jamesʼ speech dedicating the Shaw Memorial.
Students will analyze the primary sources. A guiding analysis document is included with this lesson plan. One copy is needed for each primary source.
From the primary sources the students must be able to answer the essential questions: "" Identify who Colonel Robert G. Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th " were?"
" Why is the memorial being dedicated to this group of men?
2. Following primary source analysis, students / student groups will write an expository piece describing the dedication of the Robert Shaw Memorial on May 31, 1897.
Students will respond to one of the following writing prompts:
You are a staff writer for The Boston Post. Your assignment is to cover the pomp and ceremony of the dedication of the Robert G. Shaw Memorial on May 31, 1897. Be sure to include important facts in your objective and informational article. Journalists focus on the questions who, what, when, where, and why in their writing.
You are an editorialist for Harpers Weekly. Your assignment is to cover the pomp and ceremony of the dedication of the Robert G. Shaw Memorial on May 31, 1897. Be sure to include important facts in your article. Journalists focus on the question who, what, when, where, and why in their writing. As and editorial writer you will also need to include your opinion of the ceremony and memorial.
