In Salt Lake City, Carlos Boozer had 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Utah to a 108-92 win over Portland and its fifth victory in six games. The 23-year-old goal defender picked up the top individual prize in Australian netball at the sport’s annual awards night in Melbourne on Saturday. Form in both the ANZ Cham- pionship and Australian pro- grams was taken into considerat- ion and Corletto triumphed despite missing Australia’s last three Tests of the year against England and Jamaica after under- going an arthroscopy on both knees in late September. The Diamonds have a five-Test tour of Britain in February of next year and Corletto only resumed jogging last week. ‘‘I have to make sure that I do the best for my knees and whether that’s to go in Febru- ary or not, we will just have to wait and see,’’ she said. Triple treat for Grant as Kookas crush Dutch HAT-TRICK HERO: Australia’s Grant Schubert terrorised the Netherlands defence yesterday. Picture: ANDREW BROWNBILL By JACKIE EPSTEIN in Melbourne THE Kookaburras con- tinued their winning run yesterday by inflicting the Netherlands with their worst ever Champions Tro- phy defeat. A highlight of the 7-2 thrashing was a first half hat-trick from South Aust- ralian Grant Schubert. The Dutch had previously never lost by more than four goals. ‘‘If you said to me two days ago you would have these scores I’d be very delighted,’’ said Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth. ‘‘There were some good things, Schubert was good to- day and young Brent (Dancer) scored his first goal. ‘‘Everyone’s now played so that’s good. ‘‘This is an important caul- dron for them to show and prove they can play at this level. ‘‘If you aspire to play in the World Cup then performances here are a plus.’’ The Netherlands made an ominous start by scoring from a penalty corner after just three minutes. But the Kookaburras woke from their slumber to go in at half-time with a 5-1 lead. ‘‘I think we were a bit flattered,’’ Charlesworth said. ‘‘We got caught in the first minute, that has to rectified. We went to sleep I think. ‘‘Maybe it was a good thing because then we played well for 20 minutes. ‘‘At 5-1 at half-time the game drifted a bit and we were purposeless. We can be better than that and that’s the chal- lenge for us.’’ Charlesworth rated the opening 4-0 win over Korea as a six out of 10. He didn’t give this win a rating but indicated he is still hoping for more. ‘‘When the other team gets no goal shots or penalty cor- ners then I’ll be happy,’’ he said. ‘‘I have high expectations of them but they have high expectations of themselves. They work hard. They’re a diligent group.’’ Nathan Burgers was given a run as goalkeeper, replacing George Bazeley, who kept a clean sheet against Korea. Burgers was also impress- ive, while the defence again showed poise. Captain Jamie Dwyer, who scored the side’s last goal with a stunning bullet strike, said there was strong competition within the group. ‘‘That’s maybe what we want,’’ he said. ‘‘The goalkeepers have played two very good games I think and there is a hard selection issue for the selectors. We want people to keep performing. ‘‘We didn’t let them create as many opportunities. Overall it’s always nice to get seven goals.’’ For Schubert it was a pleas- ing performance after he bounced back from the disap- pointment of missing the World Cup through injury. The 29 year-old said it was a goal to reach the 2012 Olympics. ‘‘To score any goals for Aust- ralia is good and to do it in a Champions Trophy is even better,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a little bit different being more on the experienced side. I’m helping the younger guys and giving them advice so we’re blending together well. ‘‘At this point definitely it will be a goal (to compete in 2012). Still a few years to go and a lot can happen.’’ The Kookaburras are at the top of the tournament ladder as the only undefeated side. Their third game is against England tomorrow night. Molik strikes rich vein PERTH: Alicia Molik’s tennis comeback is on track after beating Olivia Rogowska in yesterday’s final of the Gold- fields St Ives International in Kalgoorlie. The former world No. 8 gained a measure of revenge on Rogowska for beating her recently in the final of the satellite event at Esperance. The first set went to a tie- break but Molik won it 8-6, and then she controlled the second set over the No. 1 seed to win it 6-3. Molik is in fine shape and form since emerging from retirement in September. The 28-year-old’s regional tour will continue at Bendigo in Victoria this week, part of her campaign to play in Janu- ary’s Australian Open. Winds blow away Pike’s tilt at Vintage By GREGOR MACTAGGART STRONG northwesterly breezes ensured the NSW Open title hopes of Top End golf export Aaron Pike blew away yesterday. The 24-year-old was one of many players who crashed out of title contention due to the horribly testing conditions at The Vintage in the Hunter Valley. Only three of the 55 players who contested yesterday’s final round broke par, one of whom, Leigh McKechnie, came from seven shots back at the start of the day to win the $135,000 PGA Tour of Australasia event. Pike, who played in the third-last group, bore the brunt of the gale-force winds and carded an 80, which, compared to the other hopes in title contention ahead of the final round, was about average. To put things into perspective, overnight leader Jason Norris went from a 64 on Saturday to a 79 within the space of 24 hours to finish in a tie for fourth, while USPGA Tour player Nathan Green, who was also in title contention going into the final round, shot 80. Defending champion Aaron Townsend fared worse with an 83 and another player possessing extensive American experience, James Nitties, signed for a 77. But even he had to be content with second place behind McKechnie, the 36-year-old battler from Newcastle, who sealed the biggest win of his golf career and earned a cheque of $20,250. As for Pike, the 80 meant he finished at six-over in a tie for 24th and lamenting a second successive expensive Sunday afternoon that saw the Palmerston product earn $1309.50. Next on the big right- handers agenda — the Australian Open, starting Thursday. Ferguson tips two more top years for Giggs PORTSMOUTH: Sir Alex Ferguson believes he can get at least another two years of five-star service from Ryan Giggs after the evergreen Welshman scored his 100th Premier League goal in Man- chester United’s 4-1 win over Portsmouth yesterday. Wayne Rooney’s first hat- trick for United since October 2006 laid the foundations for the champions’ victory at Fratton Park, but the artistry of Giggs, who curled in a late free-kick, was as significant. ‘‘Happy Birthday Ryan,’’ Ferguson said of Giggs, who turned 36 at the weekend. ‘‘He has had it 36 times in his life, wait until he gets to 67 — I think he will be retired by then. He is an exceptional player — a rarity. He will play for two years yet.’’ Elsewhere, Tottenham grabbed a point at Aston Villa thanks to a 77th-minute equaliser from Andy Dawson to stay three points clear of their opponents in fourth. Manchester City had to settle for their seventh suc- cessive draw, finishing 1-1 against Hull, while West Ham beat Burnley 5-3 at Upton Park and Wigan bounced back from their 9-1 mauling at Tottenham with a 1-0 win over Sunderland. Damien Duff rescued a point for Fulham against Bolton, while Blackburn and Stoke drew 0-0.
