PICTURE BOOKS
BY DARCY, ELLA, KATELYN AND JAMES
Over a period of three days we have investigated ten picture books and have analysed the pictures
to see the important role they play.
The cover
We have learnt that the cover gives the first impression of the book. The cover can show either the character of the book, a event from the story or is an image that tells
the reader what the story is about. The cover tries to entice you to read the book and offers the potential
reader an overall image of the story.
Telling the story
We have discovered that the pictures can tell the story as well as the text. They can give the reader
extra information, show the reader what is happening in the text or they can show the
reader a different view of the story.
The pictures’ world
The pictures in the book can give an understanding of the world in the story. Such as,
if the story’s character does the same routine every day it builds a familiarity about the world. They can see if the world is miserable or happy
by how the picture presents itself. For example, if the scene is gloomy and suspenseful, the
illustration will be dark shades of greys and blues and if the scene is happy and joyful, the
illustration will be colourful and bright. The picture definitely shows the world within the
story.
Ways to create the pictureIllustrators use many types of techniques to create the pictures such as :
*Water colour*Acrylic paints*Sketch*Crayon*And some even use computer generated images.
These sorts of techniques are used to create depth, perspective and context within the picture
SummaryOver all, pictures play an important part in telling the story within picture books. We have discovered that pictures can tell and show people about the scenery, characters and even sometimes the main plot of the
story. Pictures can help create a movie or flowing story in young children's minds and helps them read and learn.
Picture books can be so much more than a story.
