Things to Look For When InsuringYour Antique or Classic Car

Getting the right antique orclassic car insurance for yourneeds is an important part of pro-tecting your investment. Insuringa special interest collector car ortruck has special considerations. Here are just a few things to lookfor that might help you choosethe right insurance policy.

Use RestrictionsMake sure your insurance

policy covers you for the way youactually use your antique or clas-sic car or truck in real life.

If you only drive it to and fromcar shows, or in an occasionalparade, then a policy limiting youto those uses mightserve your needs verywell.

But if you also useyour car to run downto the market to pickup a few things or tothe cafe for a bite toeat, or to the beachfor a little fun in thesun, you need to besure your policy cov-

ers that kind of use. Ask your autoinsurance agent to be sure.

Stated Value or Agreed ValueThere may be a difference be-

tween a "Stated Value" and an"Agreed Value" for your antiqueor classic car for insurance pur-poses. Be sure to ask your agenthow the company issuing yourpolicy defines these two terms, and which is better for your situ-ation.

You really don't want to findout after an accident that youused the wrong method to set avalue for your antique or classiccar.

Parking and Storage Restric-tions

Some policies might requirethat your antique or classic carbe stored in a locked garage orinside a locked enclosed trailerwhen not in use. Or a policy mightsay that your car can not be leftunattended in a parking lot.

If you travel overnight toshows leaving your car in a mo-tel or hotel parking lot might bean issue.

Be sure to ask a your agentabout your specific policy re-strictions.

One of Our Favorite Blunders...Donated trash is Declaration treasure

NASHVILLE —The old adage "oneman's trash is an-other man's treasure"took on new mean-ing — and a sickfeeling of regret —for a couple who do-nated a rolled-upparchment documentto a Nashville thriftstore last year, onlyto find out this weekthat it was a rare copyof the Declaration ofIndependence, likelyto be worth six fig-ures.

"I bought it at ayard sale ... about 10years, ago, inDonelson Hills(Tenn.), I think," said Stan Caffy,

a pipe fitter who de-scribed himself as"the idiot who donatedthat Declaration youwrote about."

Caffey read inThursday's Tennes-sean that MichaelSparks bought theDeclaration from thethrift store for $2.48and is ready to auctionit off for $250,000 ormore.

When Caffy heardthe story, he knew itwas the document hegave away.

"I look for odd andold things at sales andprobably paid aboutwhat he did for it, two

dollars and something," he said, adding that he hung it in his ga-rage, where he works on bicyclesas a hobby, just as a decorativepiece for most of the 10 yearshe had it.

Caffy and his wife, Linda, mar-ried a little over a year ago, andas part of the ritual of combininghouseholds, she pushed him toclean out the garage, which hadfilled up with all sorts of extra-neous things.

"I used to be a packrat but nowI am trying to get rid of things. The best I can recall, we had alittle debate about whether tokeep it (the Declaration) or do-nate it, and she won."

And so it was that Linda tookthe Declaration along with a pileof other stuff — an antique table,a massaging shower head, and a

Paying ItForward

Renee Warren isthe Editor of Pick-ers Pedals Pas-sions & Blunders. She grew uparound antiquesand collectibleswhile living in both NC & SC butjust wishes she had paid more at-tention to her grandmothers abouttheir love of antiques and col-lectibles. Her favorite category isanything Asian or Oriental.

Too many times have I seenwhere someone has not a clue thetrue worth or history behindsomething they have inheritedfrom a family member and justtake to Good-will or put it ina box destinedfor a yard saleto get rid ofother accumu-lated junk.

That’s how alot of us Pick-ers end up withsome sweetdeals. The say-ing is apt ‘one man’s junk isanother’s treasure.’ And that’swhy yard and garage sales can beso much fun!

I was going to work one Sat-urday morning, but was early so Ipulled over to just take a few min-utes at a yard sale. As I walkedfrom table to table, my eyes tookin trinkets, clothing, books, children’s toys, and kitchenwares.

I spotted an odd piece of pot-tery and wandered over to have acloser look. As I walked the sev-eral feet, I overheard two ladiesconversation. A neighbor was tell-ing the yard sale host that hope-fully she’d make some moneywith her yard sale. The otherwoman replied that she justneeded to make enough cashfrom selling her unwanted itemsto keep her power on.

As thoughts of sympathywashed over me at her plight, Ipicked up the small pottery itemthinking it was an odd piece. Flip-ping it over, I immediately rec-ognized the famous McCoy logo

on the bottom of the piece. And then I thought how

sad....this woman who so desper-ately needed to sell her stuff justto make enough cash to keep herpower from being turned off hadno idea that she owned a fine andvery unusual piece of McCoy

p o t t e r ythat coulde a s i l yf e t c henough ifnot moremoney topay herbill.

I heldonto to thesmall vase

and looked at other items on hertable for sale. As her neighborsaid her good-byes and walkedoff, I made my way over to thehome owner.

Instead of digging out $2 frommy pocket to pay for the oddvase, I gently told her I couldn’thelp overhearing her conversa-tion with her friend. Turning overthe vase, I pointed out the maker’smark insignia and told the woman

e x a c t l ywhat shehad.

I thentold herthat shecould snap

a picture of it, write up a smalleBay auction and list it to sell orauction off. I estimated sheshould get at least $100 or evenmuch more, surely enough to payher power bill.

She gave me the biggest hugand hollered right then for herson to come out and make him-self useful. She gave him simpleinstructions and went to work

writing down a description of thevase. I told her to put a decentreserve on it, about $100 butmentioned that it wouldn’t sur-prise me that it went for closerto $200 by close of auction.

I got back in my car and wentto work. Yes, I could have had adelightful tidy profit from justgrabbing a McCoy vase that hada $2 price sticker on it. But in-stead I decided to ‘pay it forward’by educating someone about acollectible vase that was not justsome piece of junk collectingdust.

Hopefully she had a good auc-tion on eBay and was able to keepher power and lights on. I know Ipassed up a tidy profit on a great‘pick.’

But instead I felt good byteaching that lady a little bit aboutsomething she had not a clueabout McCoy pottery.

There are so many youngergenerations who were simply notexposed to antiques or col-lectibles. To them, whatever isobsolete should go to the land-fill or Goodwill.

And that’s just downright sad.So, one of the things that we

at Pickers Pedals Passions &Blunders would like to see is ourreaders helping educate theyounger generations about itemsof great value.

Letter from the Publisher...As a textile broker I spent

much of my time knocking on thedoors of retailers and workingwith domestic textilemanufactures developingmarketing programs. In 1990, Iheard Ross Perot speak at theUNC Chapel Hill MBA School. He warned that if the NorthAmerican Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) passed, over 200domestic textile manufactureswould close. It passed and theyclosed along with thousands ofretailers. Many retailers leftentire communities with emptymills and traditional retailers outof business.

Historic designations havehelped renew many of these sitesthroughout the US and Canada.

In the charming historiclocations, new opportunities haveemerged. As the new change forretailers are competing forshoppers time as well as theirmoney. Special efforts are beingmade by like minded shoppers tofind special events that supportsuch areas. Well informedshoppers are seeking the lastingvalue of American Made

products that lead the world inquality standards andcraftsmanship. Uniquecollectibles that are beingoffered in antique malls andstores are highly desirable bymany.

Over the last decade, manyinvestors are disillusioned withall of the crash-n-burn scams andare now seeking refuge anddiversity for savings andinvestments. Many are internetrelated. Retailers and collectorsare not immune from theconfusion. Websites can bepricey when incorporating all thefancy bells-n-whistles and alsomust compete with millions ofother websites out there for cyberreaders. Not too mention theever-growing profession of‘scammers’ where buyers andsellers must wade through everycommunication and transactionas if it could be totally bogusperson on the other end.

"When I took it, I told them thatit was probably worth somethingand that they should check it out,"said Linda.

That was the end of it until thisweek.

"I had shown it (the Declara-tion) to my friend Jill back lastyear and told her I was going todonate it," said Linda. "When wegot to Bible study (Thursdaynight), she said, 'you know thatDeclaration I saw, it's worth

$200,000 to $300,000,' " Lindarecalled.

"I'm happy for the Sparks guy,"Stan said. "If I still had it, it wouldstill be hanging here in the garageand I still wouldn't know it wasworth all that."
