Applications being accepted for Hamilton Music Scene Hamilton, Ontario will play host once again to what
is being billed as "the only musical event of its kind." Now in its fourth year, the Hamilton Music Scene has had to relocate to a larger location where
both local and international acts will be presented at Copps Coliseum from Oct. 22 through 25. Other
venues across the city will also be used to showcase acts.
Five main stages will be housed at Copps Coliseum. A major coup by the organizers is the
confirmation of Aerosmith as one of the major acts to perform.
HMS will also release their fourth annual compilation CD, a collection of some of Hamilton
area's top -rated talent, a potpourri of rock, country, folk, punk, hip -hop, soul, techno, jungle, drum 'n base and R&B. In addition to being available at
retail, the CD is distributed to record company A&R
reps and media (radio and print) across the country beginning in October. The HMS marketplace will feature music,
multimedia, food and lifestyle -oriented exhibits. More than 60 exhibitors will display the latest in
electronics, multimedia, sound and recording equipment and other communications technologies.
New this year will be the selection of local restaurateurs offering foods and beverages.
An interesting addition this year is the Rawk
`N SYNC members, sporting their Planet Hollywood jackets and sweatshirts dropped byToronto's Planet Hollywood prior to their recent date at the Molson Amphitheatre.

Censorship??? Just a simple front cover of aradio station promotion and all hell breaks loose!First the post office said they wouldn't mail it andwe had to repackage it and then we got complaintsfrom some readers that it was tasteless! But wasn'tthis newsworthy that CFOX in Vancouver pulledoff such a novel promotion? Wasn't it smart of theguy to dream up the idea and wasn't it sharp ofCFOX to take the photo and send it to us? That'swhat it's all about! Now! Wouldn't it be nice ifCFOX had named the winner? (EC: Contest idea!!!What would you do to get your photo on the coverof RPM???)
Videos too expensive??? Now ain't thatshattering news? A major TV guy was up front at arecent lunch in pointing out that artists are pissingaway good money in releasing videos. There areonly so many slots for rotation and most of thevideos released never see the light of the tube. It'sbetter to have a hit on the radio and then release avideo. But then, how do you get a hit on radio oreven played on radio? Isn't that what the Canconregulations are all about? (EC: Spend the moneyon good well planned marketing if videos aren'tdoing it!!!)
Gambling on a live act!!! Paying big and insanebucks for name acts for a captive audience couldbackfire. It happened in Las Vegas where thedemands got greater and greater and finally had tobe capped. In the meantime, the legitimate houseswill be experiencing a lot of dark nights, finding itmore and more difficult to compete. (EC: They callit crapping out! ! !) So next time you want to go to aconcert...you'll have to head for a casino. The hallsjust won't be able to make money when casinosare paying twice to two and a half times the goingrate! Stupid! (EC: Another reason not to permitcasinos! ! 0 Don't want to drive to Orillia or NiagaraFalls? Too bad!
The answer!!! Las Vegas doesn't pay those bigbucks anymore and is concentrating on the citybecoming a family resort. The wife goes shopping, the kids find a lot to do. The gamblers still come!!!(EC: I'm putting my money on family resorts!!!)
Big corporate news??? One of the big guys inthe business across the pond is rumoured to bestepping down. And with that money -heavy giantlooking over their shoulder from the continent, wecould hear about a major takeover. And then therewill be four. (EC: Mem . . . ories! ! !)
On this side of the pond!!! Could it be truethat a heavy hitter from Canada's LaLa land hasbeen offered the helm of an American giant thathas sprung a few leaks? Not to worry! He turned itdown. The guy's a cold fish anyway and theAmericans would eat him up. Anyway, he's got toomuch on his plate as it is, and it's not just recordings. He may be pretty hard-nosed, but he's pretty thin-skinned, and his major moneymaker isn't too happy.(EC: Sounds scary! ! !)
The Barkman is famous!!! Bruce (TheBarkman) Barker, the sports guy on Rob Christie's
station (The Mix 99.9 in Toronto) is going to beinducted into The Baseball Hall of Fame inCooperstown. He co -designed the catcher's facemask that's made Charlie O'Brien the talk of theleague. Well, at least they're talking about it. Don'thave too much information because Bruce is awayon holidays, but the other designer is from Ajax. We'll try to get his name and the date of theinduction for next week. I'll wager no one knowsmore about sports than Bruce, and he's got sportsmemorabilia (jackets, hockey sticks, cups, sweatshirts and more) that would floor any seriouscollector, most of it given to him by the stars ofbaseball, hockey, football and whatever. (EC: Nowthat might open the door for recognition here inCanada! ! !)
GN stuck RL!!! When the bidding started at theMix 99.9 golf tournament for the services of Lewand JJ as caddies, the high rollers, and there wereonly two, moved in quickly. GN started at $1,000,RL cautiously upped it to $1500 with GN defiantlybidding $2,000 and RL took the bait and bid $2500.That's when GN threw in the towel, and RL had toput up with two of the worst caddies in golfdom, but it was all for a good cause, the Children'sFoundation. (EC: Well, that makes it alright then!!!)
Y'all come . . . but!!! That southern hospitalityis beginning to wear a little thin as the Canadiandollar continues to slide downwards. It's not justthe cost of doing business down there, it's the emptypromises that's shaking some of these snowbirds. It would be interesting to tally up how much moneyis spent south of the 49th by ripe-for-the-pickin',wet -behind -the -ears, star -struck Canadians chasingthat elusive dream of becoming stars. PR is anindustry in itself down there and Canadians are thebiggest suckers for the smooth -talking builders ofdreams and the only pot is you know what, and thatcosts big time now that you have to pay $1.50Canadian for an American buck. (EC: Hey! I'llmake you a star with Canadian money! ! !)
AmeriCan bucks??? Rumours coming from thePost guys down in Washington indicate thatsomeone having some bureaucratic authority hassuggested that Canada and the US go the way ofthe Europeans, who are about to unveil the Eurodollar (EC: It's not a done deal yet, and the fatlady doesn't look like she's ready to clear herthroat! ! !) Anyway, anything's possible as wecontinue to give away our country. (EC: Hold on!We still have Sheila Copps! ! !) Regardless, there aremany Canadians who would give up this country tobe part of the USA. (EC: The colonizationcontinues!!!)
What about the Mexicans??? Yeah! We haveto remember we're supposed to be equal partners, well not quite, with Mexico on this NAFTA thing.Remember the "three amigos" bit from our cleverprime minister? So they'll want to get in on thisnew buck deal, which might cause problems. TheAmericans aren't too happy with having us and theMexicans as their neighbours anyway. They don'tmind us being seen just as long as we're not heard. And the average American Joe is becoming moreresentful of Canadians and Mexicans (EC: Canadadoes start to look like a banana republic every oncein a while! ! !)
$1385 worth of Cancult??? To show thesymbolic saving in taxes in Ontario, CultureMinister Isabel Bassett headed to a Toronto recordstore to buy $1385 worth of CDs. I'd like a peek atthat shopping list to see how many of the CDs shebought were Cancult! As minister of this portfolio,
Dl1.1 iiI
she could have knocked off two birds with one stone. We would welcome a copy of her shopping list!(EC: Now! Are the Spice Girls Cancult???)
Cancult on the front burner!!! Our Sheila isready to do battle with those Washington nastiesonce more, and this time she could even have thebacking of the World Trade Organization, who don'twant to look like lackies to the Americans. We'retalking about that old chestnut, split -runpublications. Seems like Sheila has a good Canculthook this time. She was quoted as saying "Wecannot allow foreign publishers . . . to strip awayand skim away advertising dollars that rip away atour capacity to tell our own stories." (EC: Righton! ! !) And she wants to ban Canadian advertisersfrom putting their ads in foreign magazines thatoffer only Canadian tokenism when it comes toeditorial content. And she's got a clout of a $250,000fine to those foreign publishers who break the ban.(EC: Now watch to see if Canadian advertisingmoneymakers will become the turncoats! ! !)

DEREK SWAIN - Country/FolkSimple ThingsShaggy Mane -9803 (Holborne Distributing)Refreshingly simple, straight -ahead mostlyacoustic country with a touch of folk, flawlesslydelivered by this young singer/songwriter. It'sthat youthful, almost compelling vocal warmththat attracts the ear and the instrumentalbacking enhances the production. And whobetter to maintain that balance than producerJohn (J.K.) Gulley, who also co -wrote nine ofthe songs here with Swain. Gulley is also heardon acoustic and electric guitars. The othermusicians are Drew Birston on acoustic andelectric bass; drummer Mark Mariash; pedalsteelman Al Brisco; John Noseworthy on keys;Sherri Powell on fiddle; and Swain who doubleson mouth harp and acoustic guitar. Gulley andDarcy Ward are heard on background vocals. In Time, written by Swain and Gulley, has beentaken as the first single, a good choice, probably the best track on the album thatimpacts immediately. Also key is Last Night IDreamed and Let It Lead You Home, the latterwith a pristine accompaniment by JohnNoseworthy on keys and Swain on acousticguitar. There's no pretentiousness here, nocliched smart -ass lyrics. Material things andfamily values would seem to be a priority forSwain, somewhat different and much moremature than his last release in 1996. Recordedat the Power Plant in Barrie, Ontario. All tracksare full MAPL. -WG
THE SPECIAL GUESTS - Rock 'n PopEverybody RockMicroGroove-02Here's listening proof that radio station artist/band contests works. This Victoria -based pop/rock quartet was featured on last year'sRocktoria 9 CD compilation, which isorganized by 100.3FM - The Q, to recognizethe top acts on Vancouver Island. The bandcomprises Adam Kittredge (vocals, guitar),Piers Henwood (guitar), Jocelyn Greenwood(bass), and Brendan Pye (drums, vocals).Perhaps the best track here to get a feel forthe vocal smoothness and pristine productioncollaboration is the band's cover of Tommy

Roe's old hit Sweet Pea, which should impressthe old rocker. This doesn't however make theirmusical imprint. It just shows what they cando with an old chestnut. More in line with whatcould establish this band is the radio friendlyHalfway There and Plastic Soul. But don'toverlook Everybody Rock and Jenny: Solid,hook-ladened lyric content that makes sense.Henwood wrote most of the music and lyricswith the exception of Everybody Rocks whichwas written by the band and 3rd Street whichhe wrote with Kittredge. Produced by the bandand Rick Salt and recorded at Island PacificStudios in Nanaimo. Mastered by CraigWaddell at Vancouver's Gotham City Studios. For information call 250-360-6566, fax 250-477-8048, or check out their website(www.intro.ca/tg). -WG
MATT CATINGUB - JazzGershwin 100Concord Jazz -4797 (St. Clair Ent.)Matt Catingub (pronounced Cat-In-Goob) is amultitalented singer, musician, orchestratorand, on evidence, clever sound engineer. Asa singer, his voice is light but true andexceptionally versatile much like that ofToronto's Tommy (Mr. Jingles) Ambrose. As amusician, he plays alto sax smoothly and withgreat delicacy which is to say no squawking

or honking. His orchestrations are eminentlysuitable for either big or small bands.Engineering? On several selections here hemulti -tracks his voice into vocal combos thatrecall the heyday of the Hi -Los. He has takenall of these talents and with the assistance ofguest artists Louis Bellson (arguably today'sbest drummer), Rosemary Clooney, JohnPizzarelli and Gershwin pro Michael Feinstein, produced an album of Gershwin favourites thatcan justly claim to be a tribute and maybe evena triumph. All fourteen cuts are pleasurablethough not always for the same reasons. There's variety here but never exhibitionism.Catingub is his own man as was Gershwin andtogether they make a good team. Best cut?For us it's Home Blues from An American InParis never before recorded with lyrics. Tasty, mighty tasty . .. and tasteful. -BW

MILES DAVISThe Complete Birth Of The CoolCapitol Jazz -7243-94550-FThat Miles Davis was musically venturesomeis manifest but it's also noteworthy that hisattack was crisp. Which is to say, he had amusical message with virtually every selection, delivered it quickly and exited in preparationfor the next. As example we offer the albumunder consideration. There are 25 tracks -- 12in studio, 12 in live sessions. The longest one,Darn That Dream is only 4:25. Hell, some oftoday's musicians take longer to establish anopening theme! As always, Davis is

represented here as an artist of integrity.Among the others scattered throughout are KaiWinding, Junior Collins, Lee Konitz, GerryMulligan, Max Roach and Kenny Clarke. Abrace of nice vocals too by Kenny Hagood. There's really nothing more for us to say otherthan to state the obvious that Davis' work is stillas fresh today as it was a half century ago. -BW

If you want to hear it (sic)straight (sic again) best check out theoriginals." One wonders if the writer of thosebreathless hits knows that most people alreadyhave and they shoorasell won't appreciate thisalbum of his works. We didn't Or, is that alreadyobvious. -BW

ALBUM PICKLUCINDA WILLIAMSCar Wheels On A Gravel RoadMercury -314-558-338-QAfter 20 years of having her material recorded by the big names in the recording business,Williams parlays that talent into a solo album of her own. She hasn't been too far off therecording scene, having recorded duets with Buddy Miller, Terry Allen and Steve Earle.Interesting too is that Earle is one of the co -producers of this album, laying down thebasic tracks in Nashville. He performed on six of the tracks as well, as did Buddy Miller.Earle had to bow out of the production earlybecause of his own scheduling problem,so Williams took her unfinished productionto Los Angeles and hooked up with RoyBittan of Bruce Springsteen's E -StreetBand where she took part in co -producingthe over -dubs. Needless to say, Williamscame up a winner. Twelve of the 13 tracksare Williams' originals. Can't Let Go waswritten by Randy Weeks, a key track. Alsokey is Right In Time, taken as the firstsingle, the title track, Greenville, Joy andJackson. But don't overlook DrunkenAngel, which is kind of a shaker and couldbe a left -fielder. Remember, Williams is fromLouisiana, and her vocals purr with that southern warmth and her projection revealssomewhat of an ambivalence that adds to the charm of her song message. Interestingtoo is that Williams began work on this album three years ago, so what you hear is alabour of love, obviously done to her complete satisfaction. -JI

links to all the label's acts, including Phillips, and Reatta and Kim Gould. All three acts are country
and both Reatta and Kim Gould are currently preparing new recording projects. MacNeil has
brought to our attention that his company, MacNeil Music Group, is officed in Marion Bridge, Nova Scotia, but Phillips, who we have often referred to

Shania Twain's concert tour is paying off at both radio and retail. Her latest Mercury single,
From This Moment On, a duet with Bryan White, slides into the #1 slot this week. This is another
COUNTRY
song written by Twain and Mutt Lange. The track is included on her album Come On Over which is
selling briskly at retail.
Lonestar has the biggest mover this week. Everything's Changed, taken from their BNA album
Crazy Nights, jumps up to #55 from #83 in its third week of charting. The song was written by Richie
McDonald, Paul Nelson and Larry Boone. The album was produced by Don Cook and Wally
Wilson.

#46 this week. Fox is back to Australia for a bunch of dates in August where he will be playing Sydney,
Tamworth and Amamoor. Fox is a star down under where his album sales have been quite impressive.
He returns to Canada for a date at the American Pub in Chomedey Laval on Sept. 4), followed by
Ontario dates at the Harrow Fair (5), and the Paris Fair (6). He heads west for three dates in BC, the
Grand Forks Secondary School Auditorium (15), the East Kelowna Community Hall (16) and the
Barriere Curling Rink (17). Three dates in Alberta cap September, the Medicine Hat College Theatre
(18), Bragg Creek Community Hall (19) and the Stettler Performing Arts Centre (20). Fox co -wrote
his new single with Kim Tribble who produced his Survivor album.
The Merritt Mountain Music Festival has wrapped up its most successful year yet. More than
80,000 music fans from as far away as New Zealand and from across Canada and the US joined in the four days of great weather and "star" gazing. "The
figures are still rolling in," says the festival's Diana Kelly, "but it looks like we're at least 10 per cent
up from last year. She also points out that all those who had a reserved seat or a reserved camping spot will be offered the option to retain the same reserved spot for next year's festival. Those interested must
respond by Sept. 6 to secure the same location. Tickets for MMMF'99 go on sale on Sept. 12.
The Wilkinsons are heading for the top of the chart with their debut single 26 Cents which moves
up to #5 this week after 9 weeks. Written by Steve Wilkinson, the dad of Amanda and Tyler, and Bill
Wallace, the single is also making good chart gains in the US.
Curtis Grambo is back on the chart. This time it's with Here For A Good Time, a track taken from his Time Art album You Oughta Know Love, which
enters the chart at #95. The new single, written by Ra McGuire and Brian Smith is the follow-up to
How Could I Be Over You which enjoyed 12 weeks of charting earlier this year. Produced by Bobby
Randall, the album was recorded at Vancouver's Crosstown Studios. By the way, that's McGuire
from the '70s rock band Trooper, on mouth harp, and he's also heard on background vocals with Greg
Gordon, Kristin Gartner and Grambo. The Time Art label is located in Oak Lake, Manitoba. For
product call 204-855-2550. Debbie Wood is doing the tracking for the new single.
Dan Nash gets a massive publicity boost with the introduction of the Boa Records radiofax which
supplies "juicy" tidbits of information on Nash for
The Dixie Chicks dropped into CMT's Calgary office to say hello to music director Casey Clark and to perform a few songs for the

radio, press and retail. A Man Like That, a Nash original is getting more than 800 spins a week across
the country and is being played on more than 125 radio stations. The single moves up to #89 on the RPM Country 100 after two weeks. Here's one of those tidbits. When Nash went to Carleton
University in Ottawa, during his first year of study he was also a Page in the House of Commons. One of the requirements for being accepted as a Page is
that the applicant must be bilingual. In Nash's interview, when questions were asked in French,
he answered in Inuktituk, which is Eskimo. Nash completed all of his high school in the NWT and
had a working knowledge of the language. Interesting too is that the original fall of Joe Clark happened when Nash was a Page. Page now lives
in Calgary with his wife and three children, and expects an international release of his debut album shortly. The touring band is set to tour throughout
the world in the next few months in support of the

worldwide release. A second album is also in the works with a good portion of the bed tracks already
recorded in Nash's studio which is in the basement of his home.
Morris Rainville, who with wife Dot, formed the successful '60s and '70s country duo, The Rainvilles, is gaining interest in Europe with his
new single Would'a Been Here Much Sooner. The track was taken from his 1993 album release,
Mississauga Man, with the title track peaking at #26 (Oct. 9/93). The new single, written by
Rainville and producer Rich Dodson and featuring fiddlemeister Don Reed, was also on that album.
The single was re -issued in Canada on Hillcrest's latest CD compilation Volume 42. Unfortunately, a
number of the stations are using the single as gold, not listing it as new. European response has been
coming from England, Germany, France, Ireland, Denmark and the Netherlands.
Montgomery Steele continues his blitz of radio in the west and his friendly type of promotion is
paying off. His latest single, The River Song, climbs up to the #26 slot this week on the RPM Country
100. While in Edmonton, Steele teamed up with Tina Turley for a session at Gary Dere's studio
(RPM - July 27/98). The duet is titled Damned Old Radio. The song was written by Bernie Steward
from Dawson Creek. Edmonton's Klondike Days was a big plus for Steele. The annual fair enjoyed a
record attendance of 738,000 this year. Steele did two things of major importance at the fair. He had
a five-minute interview with Nornet (CKDQ) which was broadcast live at 3 pm on Thursday, during the
height of the fair, and his whole CD was played and broadcast live to people walking by the Coors
Light building which happened at 5 pm on Wednesday. Steele has discovered that with the
exposure he got on the Nornet station and during Klondike Days in general, he has increased the sale
of his CDs, which he sells out of his new van, and which he will do on the way back home to Dawson Creek.
Danny Hooper's new single, (I Wanna Live In A) Beer Commercial is now at radio and initial
reaction has been very good. Larry Donahue, music director at 790 CFCW Edmonton/Camrose, was so
impressed with the single, he added it this week at medium rotation. The video for the single "sizzled
right out of CMT's delivery room to current rotation," says Hooper's publicist Jolayne Motiuk,

who points out that "not since Alan Jackson's Chatahoochee has a single release epitomized just
what summertime fun is all about." The song was written by Jesse Adams, a medical doctor who is
also an aspiring songwriter. He also happens to be Hooper's next door neighbour. Hooper has just
completed taping the pilot for a new country music comedy television show called the Barn Satellite
Network which will be marketed to Canadian and US broadcasters in hopes of securing commitments for a 13 -episode series. Hooper has also returned as five -time host of the Big Valley Jamboree in
Camrose, and recently shared the stage with Marty Stuart, Ian Tyson, Tracy Byrd, Jo Dee Messina, Colin Raye and others while hosting the Bud
Country Fever in Grande Prairie. Hooper's calendar is fast filling up with appearances firmed for US
state and county fairs. In December he will once again perform during the National Finals Rodeo in
Las Vegas. Last summer, What's A Girl Gonna Do (With A Boy Like That), the first single from his
current album He's Buying Roses Again, was his first -ever national chart single, peaking at #51 on the RPM Country 100 (Sept. 29/97). The song was
a Hooper original. The album, available on the Supertramp label, was produced by Redd Volkaert,
Merle Haggard's guitar player. The album is distributed in Canada by Royalty Records.
Chris Syrie, winner of three Ontario Country Music Awards in April of this year (songwriter, single for Old Man On The Porch and CD/album
for his self -titled album), is back in the studio recording his new album in St. Catharines, Ontario
with Deane Malton doing board chores and D'Arcy Barrett doing the producing. It don't Get Any Better
Than This, a song Syrie wrote with drummer Ryan Peddle, will be the first single.
