Picasa is photo editing software from Google than can be downloaded free to your computer. 

Picasa Web Albums (PWA) is a photo sharing web site and is often compared to Flickr and similar sites. 

It allows users with accounts at Google to store and share 1 GB of photos for free. 

Picasa makes it easy to take photos and create a slideshow with music if you wish and upload it to your community webpage using YouTube.  It becomes an instant video on your webpage at no cost! 

You will need to use your Google Account information to register for Picasa Web Albums.  Please have that information handy or ask the person who has gone through the class if they have already created a Google Account and request the sign in information from them. 

When you load Picasa and open the program it will automatically begin uploading photographs found on your computer’s hard drive.  Each time you add photos to your computer it will again detect and upload them automatically. 

YOU TUBE

You Tube is a video‐sharing website on which users can upload, share, and view videos. 

When a “movie” is created on Picasa it allows you to automatically upload it to YouTube.  From there you will use a “code” found in the URL address and pasted into the Admin Panel portion of the Get Rural Kansas website.  It will automatically create a link and logo on your community’s home page in the upper right corner of the page inside the header image.  You can load several videos all of which will randomly rotate when the page is opened or refreshed. 

 

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PICASA & YOUTUBE FOLLOW: 

 

 

 

PICASA – Click on the Picasa Icon found on your desktop after downloading the program. 

Your computer will automatically begin uploading photos from your computer to Picasa.  A small transparent gray box will appear towards the bottom right of your computer screen. 

The length of a video should generally last not more than one minute.  Choose your photos carefully keeping in mind that you will only need about 16 photos to create one minute of video with each photo displaying 3.5 seconds each.  An opening title slide will be created automatically bringing the total to 17.   

 

After opening Picasa you will see on your screen something similar to this above.  Scroll through your folders found in the left hand column and find the photos you would like to use.  If they are all found in one folder then pick and choose the ones you want by selecting multiple photos from the same folder, then press the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Command key (Mac) while clicking several photos. 

However if you have different photos you want to use found in different folders you can use the following directions to move them all to a new folder that you will then use to create your movie. 

 

 

Moving Pictures: Moving photos to a new folder

Depending on your need, you can either split a folder at a specific point into two folders or else select and move specific photos into a new folder. 

Move photos to a new folder 

   1. Right‐click (Windows) or Control‐click (Mac) the photo that you'd like to move. To select multiple photos from the same folder, press the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Command key (Mac) while clicking several photos, then right‐click (Windows) or Control‐click (Mac) a selected photo. 

   2. Select Move to New Folder. 

   3. Enter the folder properties. 

   4. Click the OK button. 

Split a folder 

You can split a folder into two if you have pictures grouped together that you want to move to another folder. Follow these steps: 

   1. Right‐click (Windows) or Control‐click (Mac) the first photo of the group that should be moved to a new folder. 

   2. Select Split Folder Here. Notice that all the subsequent pictures in the folder are also selected. 

   3. Enter the folder properties. 

   4. Click the OK button. 

In both cases, the new folder is created in the same parent directory on your computer as the folder that originally contained the photos. 

NOTE! Since Picasa displays actual folders from your computer, these actions physically move the hard drive folder location of your photos. 

 

 

 

 

After creating your new folder or using an existing folder and chosen photos CLICK ON THE MOVIE PRESENTATION ICON located directly under the Folder Name. 

When the pointer is placed on top of the icon the words CREATE MOVIE PRESENTATION will appear above it as shown.  

 

A title slide will automatically be created with the Folder Name and Date.  You have the option of changing the Title, Color of background, Font, Font Size and Font Color. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Click on the middle tab named SLIDE.  You can use the drop down box to change the font, the size of the font, and highlight the title to make title changes. 

 

You can also change the background color and font color by placing your cursor on the circle and dragging the pointer that appears around on the color chart until you find what you like. 

 

Click on the MOVIE tab and choose PAN & DISSOLVE from the drop down box. 

 

The transition time can be adjusted but generally 3.5 seconds is a good rule of thumb. 

 

Note the thumbnails at the bottom.  You can click and hold a photo and move it to another place in the slideshow lineup. 

You can also add TEXT SLIDES by choosing this icon: 

Then you can change text as before by typing in the text box. 

 

 

Leave all other settings as they are and click on the CREATE MOVIE button. 

 

 This screen will appear as a draft of your movie is created.  It may take a few minutes depending on the number of slides used.  The movie will automatically start to play on your screen when finished.  

A copy of the movie will automatically be saved to Picasa.  You can also upload it to your Picasa Web Album and share it with others by choosing the SHARE button. A copy of the movie will automatically be saved to Picasa.  You can also upload it to your Picasa Web Album and share it with others by choosing the SHARE button. 

  

After you create the movie you can also edit it by opening the file and clicking EDIT MOVIE After you create the movie you can also edit it by opening the file and clicking EDIT MOVIE 

  

 

You can add an audio file anytime, either at the beginning after you’ve loaded the photos or you can add one later if you decide it needs audio.  Here’s how to do it: 

CLICK ON the LOAD button: 

 

The file manager on your computer will pop up and you will locate an audio file and click OPEN.

 

 

After you choose your audio file you have three options to choose how the slides fit with the music or if the music ends when the slides end. 

 

 

After you’ve selected the option choose CREATE MOVIE then when the pop up box appears choose REPLACE EXISTING.  If you want a version with music and one without then choose CREATE NEW. 

 

 

A new or replacement will automatically begin and be stored in the Picasa column on the left. 

 

UPLOADING YOUR SLIDESHOW/VIDEO TO YOU TUBE 

Open your file and choose UPLOAD TO YOUTUBE.  You will need to have established an account with YouTube before you can upload a video.  Please use the Gmail account information to create an account.  Save the information to pass on to anyone who will continue updating the community webpage. 

 

Enter the information requested in the box that appears.   

If it says Login Required as shown, click on CHANGE USER and fill in the User name/Password (your gmail account email and password) 

 

Fill out all information and choose Make Video Public then click UPLOAD VIDEO.  A box will appear at the bottom right showing the upload progress. 

 

 

 

When it is finished uploading you can click on the pop up to view online at YouTube.  

 

After you click on the box you will probably get a page that looks like this.  Simple fill out your Username (Gmail account email) and Password. 

 

 

 

The next page to appear will look similar to this: 

 

Click on the picture of the video to open the next page. 

 

Click on the EMBED button to open information below.

Click on the box that has a checkmark in it next to “Include related videos” so that no checkmark appears. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then highlight all the letters/numbers in the URL address found in the browser bar that come AFTER v=  and right click to copy or choose CTRL + C 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The information copied is now ready to paste into the Admin Panel.  Return to your GetRuralKansas.org site and log in. 

Click on the WELCOME VIDEO link on the left.  In the next page that appears below click on      ADD A VIDEO : 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Enter the title of the video and in the next box paste the URL code that you copied from the YouTube website. Then choose the SUBMIT button. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Click on the RED FLAG to turn it live 

 

Return to your community web page to see the WELCOME VIDEO logo appear in the upper right hand corner of the page.  Click on the logo and then click on the video to play. 

Communities can add several videos to their page.
