*he name 9walt/9 comes from the erman ver' wal&en& in turn taken from the Iatin ver'
volvere& which descri'es the turning or rotating movement characteristic of the dance.
Although rench writers have attempted to connect the walt/ to the 1Gth century volta& firm
evidence connecting this talian form to the earliest occurrence in the mid@1#th century of
wal&en to descri'e dancing is lacking (Iam' $001).
Blassical composers traditionally supplied music for dancing when re-uired& and ran/
Schu'ert"s walt/es (including the 0alses #entimentales and 0alses 4obles) were written for
household dancing& without any pretense at 'eing art music. owever& rRdRric Bhopin"s
surviving 1# walt/es (five he wrote as a child)& along with his ma/urkas and polonaises& were
clearly not intended for dance. *hey marked the adoption of the walt/ and other dance forms
as serious composition genres. 2ther nota'le contri'utions to the walt/ genre in classical
music include 1G 'y Johannes rahms (originally for piano duet)& and 4aurice :avel"s 0alses
nobles et sentimentales for piano and 9a valse for orchestra (Iam' $001).
*he long period of the walt/"s popularity was 'rought to an end 'y the irst 6orld 6ar &
which destroyed the Austro@ungarian monarchy and the Liennese culture which hadnurtured it for so long. uropean light music shifted from Lienna to erlin& and compositions
'y composers such as ustav 4ahler & gor Stravinsky& and 6illiam 6alton treated the dance
in a nostalgic or grotes-ue manner as a thing of the past. 6alt/es nevertheless continued to 'e
written 'y composers of light music& such as ric Boates& :o'ert Stol/& vor Fovello& :ichard
:odgers& Bole !orter & 2scar Straus& and Stephen Sondheim. *he predominant 'allroom form
in the $0th century has 'ecome the slow walt/& which rose to popularity around 1=10 and was
derived from the valse Boston of the 1#,0s. 7amples derived from popular songs include
