If the past eighteen months have taught us anything, it is that

innovation is the key to artistic survival.

Last year, in an effort to support the future of piano music

and artists during the pandemic, we hosted our first-ever

online piano competition, Virtu(al)oso, and introduced remote

programs like Virtual PianoKids and The Quarantine Concerts

that put music into homes across the globe. This helped inspire

music lovers and gave hope to artists both in Cleveland and

around the world at a time of great professional and financial

uncertainty.

Although 2021 continued to present challenges to our artistic

planning, we were determined to present our signature event,

the Cleveland International Piano Competition, even in a

new format. This year’s CIPC reminded everyone why this

competition is considered among the finest in the world. The

first stages, recorded in ten locations worldwide, showcased

incredible pianistic artistry. The eight Semi-Finalists selected

to come to Cleveland captivated audiences in every moment

of their performances, from traditional repertoire to original

transcriptions of popular tunes, presented for the first time

in any competition. And of course, the Final Round with The

Cleveland Orchestra consisted of four memorable concerto

interpretations and received rave reviews in national and

international media.

Beyond the competition, we created new ways for our

listeners to engage with the world of piano music. The

Listening Series — three presentations aimed at those wishing

to know more about piano music — brought hundreds of new

followers to our organization, and interactive events like Trivia

Night continued to show that piano music can be fun and

enjoyable even outside the concert hall. And to conclude this

year’s programs, we presented PianoFlicks, featuring young

musicians creativity in making original videos that combined

piano music with theater, animation and humor to enhance

people’s appreciation and love of music.

Innovation is key to Piano Cleveland’s vision of encouraging

the discovery and appreciation of piano music while

supporting pianists to achieve their full potential. We cannot

wait to share our 2022 programming with you!

TRUE OR FALSE? Dynamic duo Yaron Kohlberg and Zsolt Bognár hosted our first-ever Trivia Night at the Music Box Supper Club - you guessed it, TRUE! We welcomed teams who tested their classical music and piano knowledge for a chance to win a Cleveland musical prize package.

The Cleveland-wide pursuit to explore one-of-a-kind art in a one-of-a-kind city! 15 locations hosted repurposed pianos, with musically-inspired artwork created by local artists that highlighted Cleveland’s unique history and culture.

The Bravo Piano gala, sponsored by KeyBank, was creatively reimagined for our current times, taking place over four evenings from August 8-11, 2021 at the beautiful lakeside Shoreby Club. This unique, outdoor format allowed for socially-distant groups to gather and celebrate Cleveland’s support for the pinnacle of classical music artistry.

Bravo Piano was chaired by Mrs. Henry G. Brownell II, Mrs. Donald B. McCann, Mrs. Victor Scaravilli, and Mrs. Joseph D. Sullivan, with Corporate Chairs John E. Herman and Beth Rankin.

Named in honor of Clara T. Rankin, President’s Council member and longtime supporter of the CIPC, the Clara T. Rankin Medalist Circle was established to honor gifts of $25,000 or higher given to directly support the engagement of The Cleveland Orchestra for the Final Round of the CIPC.

Presented in Cleveland-area schools in Fall of 2021 were programs that included an interactive adaptation of the childhood favorite, Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. Future projects include a PianoLab with state-of-the-art digital keyboards.

Our education and community engagement initiatives create experiences for piano enthusiasts of all ages, culture, and socio-economic backgrounds. Together, we hope to ignite a passion for piano in our community and enrich the lives of all who participate in our programs.

This program matches pianos looking for new homes with suitable recipients, which include students, community centers & rehabilitation centers. In its first year, we have already placed seven pianos and two keyboards with students and community spaces.

Already in a short amount of time, [the piano] has helped immensely. They just respond really quickly to it...It’s a game-changer. It really makes the music program - a music program.”

-Kimberly Papa, music teacher at Paul L. Dunbar Elementary School, Cleveland Metropolitan School District, on the recent donation of a piano through our program.
