PIANISTS SERGEI BABAYAN AND DANIIL TRIFONOV, TEACHER AND STUDENT
VIRTUOSO DUO, PRESENT FIRST TWO-PIANO PROGRAM SINCE 1982
On Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 8PM, in Princeton University Concerts’ first two-piano evening since 1982,
winner of both the Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky International Piano Competitions Daniil Trifonov, and his
teacher, the prominent Armenian pianist Sergei Babayan, will present four 19th-century masterpieces by Robert
Schumann, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, and Sergei Rachmaninoff at Richardson Auditorium in
Alexander Hall. A pre-concert talk given by Ruth Ochs at 7PM is free to ticketholders.
The following morning, Trifonov and Babayan will share insights into piano-ensemble repertoire when they coach
talented Princeton University student pianists in a workshop at 9:30 AM at Richardson Auditorium, free and
open to all. As part of the new Performers as Teachers series, this class is an opportunity to learn directly from the
artists as they shed light on the process of preparing multi-piano works and the art of piano chamber music. The
workshop will offer anyone, regardless of any experience with piano music, a fascinating peek into what happens
before pianists—particularly piano ensembles—take the stage. The Performers as Teachers series will continue in
March and April 2017 with workshops led by violinist Rainer Schmidt of the Hagen String Quartet, and violinist
Pamela Frank.
25-year-old Trifonov has in record time made the transition from competition wunderkind to one of the most
respected and established piano virtuosos of our time. Recently hailed as the Gramophone Artist of the Year
2016, he has performed with virtually all of the leading orchestras around the world and in the five years since
bursting into the spotlight has already made debuts at the most prestigious concert venues in the U.S., Europe,
and Asia. While maintaining his full touring schedule, Trifonov still finds the time to continue his studies at The
Cleveland Institute of Music with Babayan. In this rare appearance together, the duo will allow us to witness the
cherished passing of music from one generation to the next right before our eyes.
