Fluorescent lamps and their selection criteria

L 18 W/930International colour renderingInternational light colour

Light colour

The light colour of a lampdepends on its spectral powerdistribution in the visiblerange. However, it is difficult to compare different lamps on the basis of their spectralpower distribution. It is much easier to use theircolour temperatures andcolour rendering properties.

Colour temperature

The colour temperature of alight source is defined as thelight colour that correspondsto the temperature of astandard radiator (black bodyradiator). It is expressed inkelvin (K). The colour tempera-ture of a lamp gives us an ideaof its light colour. The lightcolours or colour temperaturesof fluorescent lamps are deter-mined by the composition ofthe phosphor coating on the

Luminous efficacy and economy

Fluorescent lamps generatemore than 80% of all theartificial light in Europe butconsume only 50% of theenergy needed for lighting.Fluorescent lamps lastbetween eight and twentytimes as long as ordinary lightbulbs and need up to 85%less electricity for the samebrightness, depending on the type. They are thereforethe best possible option for economical lighting.

Fluorescent lamps areavailable in tubular, ring andU-shape versions in a widerange of sizes. The new com-pact fluorescent lamps arealmost as small as ordinarylight bulbs and can be used as direct replacements. Agood example is the OSRAMDULUX® EL with its integratedelectronic control gear andstandard screw base.

Modern electronic controlgear provides even greatereconomy, more comfortablelight and longer life fromfluorescent lamps.

In addition to luminousefficacy, the light colour andcolour rendering are alsoimportant criteria to considerwhen choosing the right light source.

inside of the tubes. It is possibleto produce white light with verydifferent colour nuances:– Warm White = under 3300 K– Cool White = approx. 4000 K– Daylight = over 5000 K

Fluorescent lamps from OSRAM can be categorised on the basis ofcolour temperature as follows for Ra = 80–89 for example:

LUMILUX® Daylight 6000 KLUMILUX® Cool White 4000 KLUMILUX® White 3500 KLUMILUX® Warm White 3000 KLUMILUX INTERNA® 2700 K

The relationship between colourtemperature and the spectrum. This diagram shows the spectralcomposition of the radiation from a standardised radiator (black body radiator). As you can see, at a colour temperature of 1000 K long-wave radiation dominates (yellow/red component).

Colour rendering

The colour temperature indi-cates the shade that the lightsource appears to our eyes.

If light sources are used toilluminate coloured objects, the colours of these objectsappear different despite thesame colour temperature of thelight source. Such differencesin quality are indicated by thecolour rendering index Ra.

The colour rendering index isdetermined by a comparisonwith the standardised blackbody radiator which is definedas having the “ideal” colourrendering Ra of 100 at everytemperature.

All LUMILUX® fluorescentlamps from OSRAM meet therequirements of colour rende-ring group 1B; all LUMILUX®

DE LUXE lamps fall in colourrendering group 1A.

Rules of thumb for selectingfluorescent lamps:

• The special three-bandphosphors of the LUMILUX®

lamps guarantee a highluminous flux with a highluminous efficacy of up to104 lm/W and therefore offerthe most economical lighting.

• The best colour rendering is provided by LUMILUX®

DE LUXE. However becauseof their lower luminous fluxcompared with LUMILUX®

more lamps need to be used to achieve the samelevel of lighting.

• The light colour should be selected according to thespecific tasks to be per-formed and the atmosphereto be achieved in the roomand also according topersonal taste.

Note: Every colour tempera-ture can have the ideal valueof Ra 100. This means that the colours are rendered in the typical manner for thistemperature. This is notalways satisfactory, however. For example an incandescentlamp may render blue tonesonly in a subdued mannerdespite an Ra value of 99. If fine distinctions are requiredfor blue tones a light colourwith a higher colour tempera-ture needs to be selected.

The Ra groups howeverprovide a simple means ofclassifying light sources indifferent colour renderingquality levels:

Quality groups for colour rendering

Group Ra index1 A 90–1001 B 80–892 A 70–792 B 60–693 40–59

Example:

Black body radiator 4000 K: Ra = 100 (Ideal value)

LUMILUX® DE LUXE Light colour 940 4000 K: Ra => 95 (1A)

LUMILUX®

Light colour 840 4000 K: Ra => 80 (1B)

BASIC light colour 20 4000 K: Ra => 60 (2B)

The greater the differences in colour between the com-parison lamp and the blackbody radiator at the samecolour temperature, thesmaller the colour renderingindex Ra.

Colour temperature andcolour rendering are thereforeneeded to define the lightcolour of a lamp.

Selecting the light colour

For many areas of application, the choice of the correct lightis not based on clearly definedstandards, as is the case withilluminance or colour render-ing properties for example. In most cases, there are anumber of valid alternatives. The application table showsthis quite clearly.

The choice of light colouroften depends on personaltaste, national custom, interiordesign and our subjectiveperceptions.

Cultural influences

People in the north of Europeprefer warm white light colours, whereas southern Europeansprefer “colder” light. Homesfilled with wood furniture in a rustic style lend themselvesto warm white light, whereaswhite furniture, marble andchrome look better in neutralwhite or daylight colours.Warm white light is associatedwith leisure and relaxation, whereas neutral white anddaylight white are associatedwith work and concentration.

Thousands of years of experi-ence have conditioned us toassociate high colour tempe-ratures (full sunlight) with highilluminance, and low colourtemperatures (evening sun-light, fire and candlelight) with low illuminances. For thisreason, we consider daylightwhite light of less than 500 luxas unpleasantly pale.

These are just some of theaspects that you need to takeinto account when selectingthe light colours of fluorescentlamps. The following pagescontain detailed informationon the applications of thevarious lamp types and lightcolours.

There is no one “right” way of selecting the lightcolour. Instead, individualaspects such as furniture, furnishings, personal taste and culture are oftencrucial factors.

LUMILUX® DaylightLight colour 860

Economical daylight

Fluorescent lamps with lightcolour 860 are the ideal eco-nomical light source whereverthe artificial lighting needs to have a daylight character, shades of colour have to be identified and colours haveto be rendered as naturally as possible.

These requirements have to be met, for example, inclothing and shoe shops, photographic, jewellery andflower shops, opticians, textile companies, doctors’practices and editorial offices.

8

The daylight character of light colour 860 is particularly suitable

for all types of textiles.

Benefit from the feelgood factor

BlOLUX® fluorescent lampsfrom OSRAM emit a daylightwhite light that closely mimics natural sunlight thanksto a small additional UV com-ponent. They are ideal foroffices which get little daylightand for areas where light isneeded to make people feelgood, such as departmentstores, banks, schools, kinder-gartens, open-plan offices and doctors’ practices.

Exposure to the light fromBIOLUX® lamps is prescribedby doctors for patientsrequiring phototherapy.Illuminances of over 2000 luxare used here.

Because of its spectral distri-bution, the light from BlOLUX®

lamps is also excellent forraising small animals (birds, fish, reptiles, etc.).

Daylight with the bestpossible colour rendering

BlOLUX® lamps with a colourtemperature of 6500 K corre-spond closely to standardilluminant D 65 and have acolour rendering index ofRa >95. They are therefore theperfect solution for all appli-cations in which the bestpossible colour rendering isneeded. As they fall in quality class 2 (as defined inDIN 6173) they even meet the high requirements forcolour matching.Previously this was possibleonly with costly colour testingluminaires fitted with XBO®

lamps and filters. Now entirerooms can be illuminated withthis type of light.BlOLUX® lamps can be usedas direct replacements forconventional fluorescentlamps.

Note: As with the otherLUMILUX® DE LUXE lightcolours, the lower luminousflux compared with LUMlLUX®

light colours must be takeninto account.

BIOLUX® lamps in light colour 965 are an excellent complement tonatural daylight and are suitable forraising small animals because of their additional UV component.

FLUORA®

Light colour 77BASIC light colours 10, 20 and 30

17

The conventional light colours

Fluorescent lamps in theBASIC light colours can beused for existing lightingsystems in areas where there are no special requirements in terms of lighting comfort or colour rendering.

Light colours 10 (Daylight), 20 (Cool White) and 30 (WarmWhite) can be used wherecolour rendering quality is not a major requirement, forexample in warehouses orgarages. Light colour 25 issimilar to light colour 20 but with slightly improvedcolour rendering. It is better touse light colour 840 ratherthan 25.

For new installations and upgrades to existingsystems you’ll get bettereconomy and quality of lightwith modern T5 fluores-cent lamps, which are onlyavailable in LUMILUX®

light colours.

OSRAM FLUORA® lamps are the light sources for plants and aquariums. They emit most of theirlight at the blue and red ends of the spectrum.Their spectrum is perfectly matched to thatrequired for photo-biological processes. Theresult is healthier plants.

Better to use LUMILUX® light colours

BASIC fluorescent lamps are no longer recommendedfor new installations or evenfor replacing lamps in existinglighting systems becauseLUMILUX® lamps offer morelight, better colour renderingand higher luminous efficacy. This means that fewer lumi-naires are needed, making the lighting system muchmore economical. Even in oldlighting systems the extra lightfrom LUMILUX® lamps is bene-ficial. Old luminaires lose theirinitial efficiency as they yellowand the reflectors lose theirshine. The higher luminous fluxof the LUMILUX® lamps cancompensate for this.

Light for healthier plants

The light from FLUORA®

fluorescent lamps has anemphasis at the blue and redends of the spectrum so it isideal for promoting photo-biological processes in plants. The result is healthier plants.

FLUORA® lamps are usedwherever plants do not receiveenough natural daylight, forexample over feature plantingin shopping centres, offices, hotels and the home, and also for florists’ shops, green-houses and aquariums.

In warehouses, BASIC light coloursprovide appropriate backgroundlighting.

The innovative FH®, FQ®

and FC® T5 lamps are settingnew standards in brightnessand economy. The smallertube diameter significantlyincreases the operationalefficiency of the luminaires, and the ECG automaticallyswitches off electrode heatingonce the lamp has started, thus reducing the power lossand increasing the average lamp life to 20,000 hours.

The super bright FQ®

The FQ® lamp (FluorescentQuintron) produces up to 50%more luminous flux than T8lamps of comparable length. For example, the 850 mm longFQ® lamp produces 3500 lm at an optimum ambienttemperature of 35°C, which iseven higher than that pro-duced by the 1200 mm longLUMILUX® lamp.

The unconventional FC®

The circular FC® lamp(Fluorescent Circline) pavesthe way for compact, high-intensity circular luminaireswith high levels of efficiency –which get away from the usual strip lighting systemsand offer all the technicalbenefits of the FQ® lamps.

The economical FH®

The FH® lamp (FluorescentHigh-efficiency) offer anextremely high luminousefficacy of up to 104 lm/W –and consumes up to 20% lesspower than conventional T8lamps with a tube diameter of26 mm for the same amountof light. All FH® lamps havethe same luminance sodifferent wattages can becombined.

OSRAM ENDURA®

19

The new generation of fluorescent lamps: Fit and forget

No electrodes, no wear. In the ENDURA® high-performance fluorescent lampthe discharge needed togenerate light does not takeplace between two electrodesbut in a closed ring. The energy is injected fromoutside via two ferrite rings(induction principle). Thismeans that the lamp lasts solong (an average of 60,000hours) that it virtually does notrequire replacing. That’s fouror five times as long as con-ventional fluorescent lamps.

In conjunction with an ap-propriate ECG, the ENDURA®

produces a luminous flux thatis higher than any producedby a fluorescent lamp before:up to 12,000 lm in the 150 Wversion, with a luminousefficacy of 80 lm/W.

The ENDURA® system hasbeen developed specificallyfor applications in whichrelamping involves high costs– for example in factoriesoperating round the clock, outdoor lighting mounted onhigh masts, tunnel lighting or bridge lighting.

The long life of the ENDURA®

system guarantees extremely longmaintenance intervals.

Perfect light withelectronic control gear

All the lamps listed here shouldideally be operated with theappropriate electronic control gearfrom OSRAM.

Modern electronic high-frequencycontrol gear such as QUICKTRONIC®

replace conventional ballasts andstarters and achieve even greatereconomy, better lighting comfortand longer life from your fluores-cent lamps.

The most importantgeneral benefits of using ECGs

• Energy savings• Longer lamp life• Silent, flicker-free operation• Lower weight and smaller

Compact fluorescent lamps with plug-in bases foroperation with separatecontrol gear are particularlycompact and are thereforesuitable above all forcreative luminaire designs, modern lighting systemsand miniaturised fittings. They are offered in variouslight colours that match the light colours of linearfluorescent lamps.

• For conventional operation:OSRAM DULUX® S, D and T– The starter and RF

suppression capacitor areintegrated in the base

• For high-frequency controlgear: OSRAM DULUX® S/E,D/E and T/E – Suitable for operation on

batteries, solar cells andmains supplies in high andlow-voltage ranges andfully dimmable

– Enhanced economy, com-fort and reliability thanks to electronic operation

• Bright OSRAM DULUX® Land F lamps can beoperated conventionally orelectronically

Extra low-profile: OSRAM DULUX® S and S/EWith their low-profile design,OSRAM DULUX® S and S/Eare ideal for shallow wall andceiling luminaires and formodern lighting systems.

Extra short: OSRAM DULUX® D and D/ENo bigger than ordinary lightbulbs, OSRAM DULUX® D and D/E are particularly suit-able for shallow luminaires.

Compact fluorescent lamps OSRAM DULUX® with plug-in bases

Their small dimen-sions and slimdesign make OSRAMDULUX® S lampsideal for creativelighting.

OSRAM DULUX® T lamps are one third shorter than OSRAM DULUX® Dlamps and therefore also fit in lumi-naires with shallow mounting depths.

Extremely short: OSRAM DULUX® T and T/EThe even shorter pin-baselamps with triple-turn tubesfor miniaturised unconven-tional luminaires and lightingsystems with shallow mount-ing depths.

Even cooler: OSRAM DULUX® T IN and T/E INOSRAM DULUX® T IN and T/E IN compact fluorescentlamps are ideal for indoorapplications in which highambient temperatures occur, such as narrow downlights.

OSRAM DULUX® LMuch shorter and slimmer than linear fluorescent lamps,OSRAM DULUX® L lamps open up new applications foreconomical energy-saving lightin small elegant luminaires.

OSRAM DULUX® FA particularly low-profilefluorescent lamp speciallydesigned for square surface-mounted and recessedluminaires. Just about half aslong as an OSRAM DULUX® Llamp of comparable output.

Things can get really hot in down-lights. But that leaves OSRAMDULUX® T IN lamps cool. They havebeen specially designed for the high ambient temperatures that canoccur in downlights.

Squaring the circle: OSRAM DULUX® F lamps areparticularly low-profile compact fluorescent lamps witha high luminous efficacy. They can be used in 2 M and3 M modular luminaires or modern vertical downlights.
