Nothing in life is to be feared,

it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. No, no, you’re not

thinking… you’re merely being logical.

A perfection of means, and a confusion of

aims, seems to be our main problem.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If it doesn’t

agree with experiment, it’s wrong!

Wonderful Physicists said these… can you

guess who?

Hint hint: Hmmm… Marie

curie was pretty wonderful.

So was Albert Einstein,

Richard Feynman and Neil’s

Bohr.

ToalltheA(s)…You’re an introvert. While we all believe that no man is an island, you find that it’d be nice if people would give you more time and space. You’re perfectly happy sitting in your room alone, doing your own things; if people occupy too much of your time, you find that you yourself are crowded out of your own life. =( IfyouhavevisitedPhysoc(andifyouhaven’tyoushould,S120208),you’dnotethat the room is realllllllyyyyy tiny. We fit 14 people in there every meeting.Gosh,it’dbenicetohaveaquietoneonceinawhile…=)You’dfitperfectly.Docome!

ToalltheB(s)…You’re an extremely friendly person. Bubbly and always at the center of attention, you have many friends and many more acquaintances. You would do much to see people happy, leading you yourself, often, to be the source of their joy. Warmpeopleareextremelynecessary!Who’dbreak–ormelt, ifyou like–alltheice,ifnot?Youaremostwelcomedintophysoc…It’sadamp,cold–freezingalmost–place…mostlycuztheairconditioningisalwaysturnedontofullblast.But,allthesame…..=p

ToalltheC(s)…You’re a perfectionist. You absolutely hate things that are out of place and not going in the way you plan it to. You’re great at organizing and getting things done. You might be at loggerheads with the carefree person though, and would avoid him at all costs were you doing a group project that affects your grades. =) Which committee would pass up on having a person who gets things done? What more a person who gets them done perfectly?! Physoc would definitelyappreciateyourcontribution!Dojoinusinourcomingsemesterandhelpusgetthingsperfectlyinplace.

ToalltheD(s)…You’re a carefree person. You’re a person who sets your own pace and are not easily disturbed by the things going on around you. You keep your cool and often reduce tension amongst people. It’s relaxing to hang around you… though, of course, the more driven people might find it difficult to cope with you. There’salmostmoretodoandmoretostressoutoverinourlittlePhysocroom.Having a calming and relaxing person who’s carefree might help lighten theatmosphereinPhysoc.Docomebyandabsorbusintoyournostresspace.=)

ToalltheE(s)…You’re a reflective person. Generally rather quiet on the outside, you are a rather troubled person. Seeing things that people sometimes miss, drawing implications that seem to be inconsequential to others, you are generally more appreciative of both the emotional and mental sides of things…. And often, the hard unyielding line between the two never seem clear enough to others. Atthepaceweareoftenmovingin,Physoccannevergettoomuchofapersonwhostops to thinkandrealizes the implicationsof theiractions.Wewouldbemore than happy to have a person who seriously think through about theimplicationsofourplansandtakenotofthethingsthatwe, thenonreflectivepeoplemightmiss.

*Ahem* =P Excuse the lame attempt of publicizing

Physoc.

Do stop by, however Orientation is on the 5th of August, from 1pm till 5pm. As for the AGM, we’ll keep you posted. Besides, Physoc tries

(rather hard) to extend out of merely the committee, so

even if you’re not interested in running for

committee and stuff, or you want to try and settle down in university life before you

start any committee-running-business, come

anyway. We’re more than interested to know how we can involve you in Physoc. The main aim of Physoc is, after all, to cater to the needs of Physics majors – you that is! We’re open to

suggestions….

Ps: The last question was just for fun. I’m not sure if

our preference for Physics is dependent on our

personality.

1) Allthreeforceswillbepointingdownward,intothecentreofthecircle.

Doesthisbotheryou?=)Ifitdoesn’tyoucanskiptothenextquestion. If it does… you need only remember thatcentripetalforceisthenetforce.Hence…i) Equilibrium of forces is NOT nullified. In the

firstcase,T isbiggerthan, andintheoppositedirection from mg. In this second case, T andmgareinthesamedirection.Inbothcasesthenetforcepointstowardthecentreofthecircle

ii) Thenetforceonlychangesthedirectionoftheblock. It is never strong enough (if circularmotiondoesexist)tocausetheblocktodrop.

2) Tensionwillstillbe0.Because there’s no friction on eitherblocks, the only force governing theirmotioncomesfromg(accelerationduetogravity),which isaconstant.Duetothe incline, a = g sin , for both theblocks. Having the same accelerationand initial velocity ensures the samedisplacement.Itfollowsthatthere’dbeno tension although the weightcomponent and net force acting onbothAandBaredifferent.

4) Answer:ii)Notchangethetensiononthepantsatall.

Everyactionhasanequalandoppositereaction.Hence the action of the horse on the pantsmerits an equal and opposite reaction betweenthepantsandthehorse.Tensionalongabodyisconstant and thus, there exists a tensionbetween the pants and the fence. By Newton’sThird Law, the fence acts on the pants with thesame force. That would render it similar to twohorsespullingonit!

5) 0.9cmBecause the volume of ice is decreased by 10%, the weight andrequired buoyant force decreases by 10%. Because the buoyantforce depends on the volume of water displaced (volume of iceimmersed) and the area of ice immersed cannot be decreased, hence the height of ice immersed decreases by 10%. Therefore,only0.9x9cm=8.1cmoficeisimmersedinwaterand9cm8.1cm=0.9cmoficeabovesurfaceofwater.

3) Answer:(iii)366daysIn 365 ¼ days, the earth makes 365completespinsaboutitsaxis.However,taking 24hour snap shots of the EarthandtheSunwouldshowustheEarthatdifferentpointsinitsorbitbutwiththesame side facing Earth! Thus it can beseen that this same side of the earth(since the sides are arbitrary, thatmeans all the sides of the earth… andhence, the earth as a whole) makes a360 turn – an extra “spin” about itsaxis.

even when you do know all the initial conditions… I mean if it doesn’t work in

the lab, why’d it work in life?!
