Soluble Coated Fills.

These Pills are unsurpassed in their medic-inal qualities, as only the best materials enterinto their composition, while the most scrupul-ous care is exercised in their manufacture.

An extended laboratory experience compris-ing unceasing attention to details during aperiod of more than a quarter of a centuryenables us to arrive at results otherwise unat-tainable.

We claim a method ofcoating whichremainspermanent and avoids the necessity for dryingthe mass so hard as to render it insoluble orinert. This scientific method which we do nothesitate to call our own is fully recognizedand appreciated, as is demonstrated by theconfidence reposed and the success attained.

It is our wish to emphatically impress uponthe minds ofprescribers, that our make of Pillswill produce the effects as should be expectedin connection with the drug employed, andthat every other desire is subordinate to thisend. We thank the Profession for the veryliberal endorsement and patronage that hasbeen accorded us and oifer our assurance thatour efforts shall, as heretofore, be directed to-wards the production of the highest class ofPharmaceutical preparations.

Respectfully,

WM. B. WARNER .t CO.

TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION.

While presenting this revised edition of our For-mulary we take the opportunity to extend our thanksto our many friends; who have aided us by their pat-ronage and influence in distributing PharmaceuticalPreparations of the highest standard and to expressthe hope that our efforts, in this direction, may con-tinue to gain for us a confidence and feeling that ourexperience covering as it has, a period of thirtyyearsand comprising deep scientific research and skilfulmanipulations, in conjunction with a conscientious de-sire to produceonly thebest, should at least warrantus in claiminga perfection of manufacture unexcelled.

Such facts are worthy the attention of Practi-tioners who are called upon to battle with disease, and who must in using ready prepared medicines, de-pend upon the correctness of manufacture to gain thelooked for therepeutical effects, whereby their ownreputations are sustained and the ills of their patientsalleviated

It may be well, in this connection, to reiteratethat our endeavors havealwaysbeen directed towardsthe production of first-classpreparations, regardless ofcost and passing the question of extreme cheapnesswhich so often arises through competition and ananxiety to dispose of products; all of which verynaturally has a tendency todepreciate quality corres-pondingly with the falling off in price.

We maintain that quality is ofprimary importanceand in this we flatter ourselves that we have receivedthe undivided encouragement and support of an intel-ligent profession, throughout the course of our busi-ness career.

With these few preliminary words outlining ourpolicy, we beg leave tosuggest the importance of spec-ifying Warner & Co.’s make when ordering or pre-scribing.

Very RespectfullytWM. R. WARNER A CO.

PROF. At Madgeburgand Greifswald I often had to send myrecipe for the pills to a great distance, mygood fortune in the treatment of Chlorosis—to which, by-the-by, I owe the rapidgrowth of my practice—having given megreat repnte as the possessor of a sover-eign remedy against that disease.”

In cases where lodide of Iron is pre-scribed, it is absolutely necessary, for thephysician, who relies on the therapeuticaction for beneficial results, that the com-pound should be perfectly protected, andso prepared as to remain inalterable andstable.

With this important fact in view, wehave devoted special study to lodide ofIron in pilular form, and are warranted inannouncing that Warner & Co.’s lodideof Iron Pills meet all therequirements, andare the most perfect preparation of thekind.

A salt is formed and so prepared as toguard against oxidation, and will remainunchanged for years. A coating of puresugar renders them pleasant to ad-minister, and further insures protection.^

In proof of the above statement, a pillcut throughpresents all the characteristicsof a perfectpill mass and the presence oflodide Iron, without the free lodine, form-inga clearsolution; and dissolving readilyif thrown into a glass of water.

The dose of lodide Iron Pills is fromone to two at meal time and is recom-mended and successfully used in the treat-ment of PulmonaryPhthisis or Consump-tion, Anoemia and Chlorosis, Caries andScrofulousAbscesses, ChronicDischarges,Dyspepsia, Loss of Appetite, etc.

nervine, sorbefacient, anti-periodic, andanaesthetic. As analterative it acts withmore rapidity than othermedicines of thatclass, in doses of one, two, or three grains, repeated thrice daily. As a nervine it isprompt and efficient; while itgives nervousstrength,it calms speedily the most severepains.

It is rapidly absorbed into the blood.Accumulative effects have not been ob-

It may be administered, with reason-able expectation of success, in the follow-ing diseases:

Neuralgia of every description, chronicrheumatism, consumption, scrofula, oph-thalmia, chronic ulcerations, and skindiseases, syphilis, and certain affectionsof the neck of the bladder and prostrategland, and whenever a powerful alterativeagent is needed. PHOSPHORUS has recently been pre-scribed with great advantage in cases ofextreme debility and mental depression, from prolonged anxiety or excessive ex-citement; also, in nervous prostration fromoverwork, especially brain-work. It isrecommended in cases which are attendedwith great prostration of thevital powers;in exhausting diseases, such as Cholera,Diphtheria, and the letter stages ofTyphus and other Fevers, etc. In Epi-lepsy, Epileptiform-Vertigo, Melancholia,Softening and some other diseases of theBrain, it has been given with markedbenefit; also in Neuralgia, Tuberculosis, and Scrofula, in chronic and inveteratediseases of the skin, Leprosy, Lupus, andPsoriasis. Dr. Burgess recommends it inPruritus Pudendi and other forms ofPruritus.

Phosphorus, Strychnine, and Iron, combined in the proportions above indi-cated, is a safe and valuable remedy. Asa nutritive tonic and stimulant to thenervous system, especially the spinal cord,it is admirably adapted for the treatment■of a large number of nervous disordersdependent on defective nutrition and de-bility. It increasesappetite and promotesdigestion. It may be safely given in allthose cases in which hypophosphites areemployed. It is strongly recommendedin Consumption, Neuralgia, Atonic Dys-pepsia, Lowness of Spirit, in GeneralDebility, and in that general condition ofdepression and loss of power popularlyknown as below par, and in breakdownfrom overwork and mentalfatigue.

The composition of this pill is the sameas Dr. Squibb’s recipe, and for adminis-tration ispreferable, being just as solubleand more elegant in appearance.

Practical testfor Solubility:—Suspend 3of these pills in water and they will dis-solve, coating included, as soon as theplain pills ready prepared. This is ac-complished throughour method ofmanip-ulationand coating, and physicians shouldnot regard the prejudice against sugar-coated pills as applying to Wm. R. ARE CAUTIONED AGAINST IMITATIONSAND SUBSTITUTIONS OFFERED UNDER

OTHER NAMES.

This is a new class of medicines (minute pills), de-signed for the administration of remedies in smalldoses for frequent repetition in cases of children andadults. It is claimed by some practitioners that smalldoses, given at short intervals, exert a more salutaryeffect. The elegence and efficiency of Parvuies, andthe avoidance of cumulative effect, depend on ourmode ofpreparation.

THE DOSEof any of the parvules will vary from one to four, according to age or the frequency of their admisistra-tion. For instance, one Parvule every hour, or twoevery two hours, or three every three hours, and soon for adults. For children, one three times a day isthe minimum dose.

DOSIMETRIC GRANULES.WM. R. WARMER & CO.

As their name indicates, these Granules aremeasured doses of the alkaloids, metals andmetalloids in such definite and accurate pro-portionsas may best meet the requirements ofthe physician.

The most perfect system ofDosimetry is thatcomprised in Parvules originally introduced byWarner & Co. several years ago, but DosimetricGranules are intended to comprise such reme-dies as are new and such as are proximate prin-ciples not so frequently repeated in a measuredtime for all cases.

These Granules have been divided accordingto the metric system into strengths of half mil-ligramme, one milligramme and centigramme. In each instance, however, their equivalentsare stated in grains or fractions thereof. Sucha plan, we think will easily familiarize thepractitioner with the metric system for allpractical purposes and will commend itself atonce to his recognition.

The selection of the list is based entirelyuponthe physiological action of these active or essen-tial principles, and are therefore administeredupon a rational basis, thus making therapeu-tics stand upon firmer ground than that whichit has occupied or even still occupies, whencompared with the advances which its sister

Page 59: Physicians' complete formula book

57

sciences have taken within the last decade.Under the administration of these Granules, therapeutics partake of the character of aspecific form of treatment.

The cutting short or strangulation of manyacute diseases, while as yet in their incipientor formative stages has not been sufficientlyappreciated. That this is possible, the medicalliterature of the day affords ample evidence;but to accomplish it, treatment must be bothscientific and energetic, i. e., must.be basedupon the physiological action ofdrugs and uponthe action of reliable medications.

With such an intention, these Granules havebeen prepared abroad, (in France particularlyas suggestedby Dr. Burggraeve.)

This method oftreatment has met with suc-cess, and it will be a matter of no surprise thattherapeutists in this country should be promptin adopting it.

In the hands of the physician and Ms handsonly, theseGranules arepotent remedies, capableof accomplishing results far more quickly andcertainly than the uncertain fluid extracts andtinctures, and far more pleasantly.

See following pages for list comprising 66varieties.

“PARVULES.”Gentlemen:

Although a practitioner of over forty years, I thinkI may feel privileged to express my great pleasure andappreciation of the new class of remedies prepared byyou called “Parvules.” I regard them the greatestimprovement in modern medicine, and I could scarcelypractice my profession without them, as they are sohandy, so convenient, and easily taken by children andadults. Their most important quality is theirunvary-ing and reliable strength and efficacy. I can obtainwith a grain or less of Calomel, with a grain or less ofAloin, and with a grain or less of Podophyllin, dividedrespectively into the tenth, twentieth, or fortieth of agrain, in “ Parvules,” all that I could desire in mostcases, and in a more satisfactory manner than in theusual form. I have used successfully a “Parvule” ofone fiftieth of a grain of Sulph. Morphia repeatedly fortwo or three hours, and have relieved pain withoutthe least nausea or vomiting in patients that could notbear opiates in any other form. I do not know whatto attribute this to, except the peculiar mode of pre-paringthe‘‘Parvules,” as they are soreadily dissolvedand absorbed after being taken, and in endorsing themI must disclaim any favoritism or sympathy withHomoeopathy. A “Parvule” given every hour, itwill be seen, is not Homoeopathyin theory orpractice.I usually give two “Parvules” of Calomel every houruntil six or seven doses are taken, and the result is thesame as with ten grains of the same without theembarrassing effect. 1 give four or five “Parvules”of Aloin, the effect is the same as four or five catharticpills; also with the Podophyllin “Parvules;” theywill relieve habitual constipation, derangement of theliverand digestive organs, if given, one or two, threetimes a day.

I have no doubt that every practitioner who will usethese “Parvules” will find the same results whichconvinced me of their importanceand convenience. Ihave no other medicinechest in my daily rounds thanmy pocket case of “Parvules.”

Yours very truly.

The above combination which we have successfullyand scientifically put inpill form, produces when takeninto the stomach, Carbonate of the Protoxide of Iron,(FerrousCarbonate) ina quicklyassimilablecondition.

This Pill contributed to make the reputation ofNiemeyer, and the following language, which speakswithout comment, is taken from his Text Book onthe Practice of Mf.dxcink.

PROF. NIEMEYER says: “Forraorethantwentyyears I have used these pills almost exclusively inChlorosis, and have witnessed such brilliant resultsfrom them in a large numberofcases thatIhave neverneeded any opportunity to experiment with otherarticles. At Madgeburg and Greifswald I often hadto send my recipe for the pills to a great distance, mygood fortune in the treatment of Chlorosis—to which,by-the-by, I owe the rapid growth of my practice—■having given me great repute as the possessor of asovereign remedy against that disease.”

The dose of Pil; Chalybeate is from 1 to 4 at mealtimes and is recommended and successfully used inthe treatment of Pulmonary Phthisis or Consumption,Anaemia and Chlorosis, Caries-and Scrofulous Absces-ses, Chronic Discharges, Dyspepsia, Loss of Appe-tite, etc.

Dose.—One or two pills may be prescribed three times aday. They shouldbe taken immediately after eating.

It is truly stated by eminent practitioners that thesepills will cause the pale lips to become red and the rosyflush of health to creep into the face in about two weeks’time.

La Progress Medicate: —“lron is one of the most im-portant principles of the organism and the only metalthe presence of which is indispensable to the mainte-nance of life. It exists in all parts of the system, butnowhere does it acquire such importance as in the blood.

The blood of a person in good condition containsabout forty-five grains of Iron; when this amount isdiminished a decline takes place, the appetite fails, thestrength is enfeebled, and the blood losesits fine naturalcolor and qualities.

In a greai. number of diseases such as ansemia, chlo-rosis, hemorrhages, debility, etc., it sometimes happensthat the blood has lost half its iron, and, to cure thesediseases, it is absolutely necessary to restore to the bloodthe iron which it lacks, and great care should be exer-cised that the most assimilable form of iron should beused, one that penetrates into the organism without un-duly taxing the digestive tract or interfering with theessential qualities of the gastric juice.”

In chloro-anremia, Warner’s Pll. Chalybeate Comp, regenerates the diseased red globules of the blood witha rapidity not before observed under the use of otherferruginous preparations; it adds to their physiologicalpower, and makes them richer in coloring matter. Moreover, being neither styptic nor caustic, and hay-ing no coagulating or astringent action on the gastro-intestinal mucous membrane, this preparation of ironcauses neither constipation or diarrhoea as it does notneed to be digested in order to be absorbed, it does notgive rise to the sensation of weight in the stomach, orthe gastric pain and indigestion occasioned by otherpreparations. In women who have not menstruated formany months, the amenorrhoea disappears; in otherssuffering from an anremic state of long duration, givein proportion as the ordinary preparations of iron havenot been well borne, Warner’s Pll. Chalybeate Comp, one or two after each meal, soon restore the digestivefunctions to their normal state.

The small quantity of Nux Vomica is added to in-crease the tonic effect, to give tone to the stomach andnerves and increase the appetite.

Carbonates of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium are all anti-dotes. In lhe case of sulphuric acid, water should not he drank, as theunion of the two produces great Meat.Subsequent inflammation may hetreated in the ordinary manner.

Carbonates ofcalciurn and magne-sium alone should be employed; seeabove.

Ammonia is an antidote but itshould not be employed in a veryconcentrated form. Liquid chlorinehas also been found efficacious. Thecold douche to the head has beenrecommended.

Vomiting should he produced bytickling the fauces and giving largedraughts of warm water. Astringentinfusions as galls, oak bark, Peru-vian bark, act as antidotes, andshould be given at once. Powderedyellow hark may be given until theinfusion is prepared.

Hydrated peroxide iron, diffusedthrough water, or the precipitatedcarbonate in very fine powder, should be given every five or tenminutes until relief is obtained. This isparticularlyefficacious wherewhite arsenic has been swallowed.

Dialysed iron solution has comemuch into vogue at the present timeand been highly recommended as anantidote, but the recent experimentsof E. Hirschsohn, Russia, prove thatwhen used alone, it has no valuewhatever in this respect, and, whenused in connection with ammonia,or magnesia, the resulting insolublecompound formed with the arsenic,is decomposed much more readilyin the presence of acids than whenthe hydrated peroxide of iron is em-ployed.

Albumen in form most readilyobtained, as milk, whiteof eggs, &o.Vinegar should not be given. Theinflammatory and nervous symp-toms to be treated on general prin-ciples.

Albumen such as white of eggs, milk and wheat flour beaten withwater, must be promptly adminis-tered. Counteract inflammation byordinary means. Gold finely mixedin dust with iron filings. The ironfilings and Jerri pulvis have beengiven enclosed in gold leaf.

The vomitingmay be relieved bycopious draughts of warm water.Carbonate sodium in solution willdecompose the sulphate. Milk andalbumen act as antidotes. Generalprinciples to be observed in the sub-sequent treatment.

Largeand strong glysters of soap dissolvedin water, or ofsalt and gruel, shouldbe speedily administered toclear thebowels and assist in getting rid ofthe poison. Active purgatives maybe given after vomiting has ceased. When as much as possible of thepoison has been expelled, give alter-nately, a teacupful of strong hotcoffee and diluted vinegar. If thedrowsiness or insensibility be notrelieved by these means, blood maybe taken from the jugular vein, blisters applied to the neck and legsand the attention roused by everymeanspossible. If the heat declines, warmth and frictions must be per-servingly used.
