Helping you Stay Healthy Through the Marathon of Life COAST Physical Therapy Newsletter - Summer 2016 PHYSICAL THERAPY IN THE NEWS In this section, we want to share with you the latest research that pertains to injuries and how physical therapy can help you when compared to other treatment options. We believe physical therapy is the most cost effective, safest, and overall, most effective treatment option for you, and here’s one study that supports our belief (shared from www.moveforwardpt.com). Physical Therapy First for Low Back Pain Lowers Costs If you have low back pain, you should get evidence-based physical therapy right away. Otherwise, your costs are likely to go up, along with the potential use of opioid medications, spinal injections, surgery, and other treatments. That’s according to the results of an award-winning study published in BMC Health Services Research that reviewed 122,723 Military Health System patient records (Implications of early and guideline adherent physical therapy for low back pain on utilization and costs – April 9, 2015). Researchers divided patients into 4 groups: those who received physical therapy within 14 days of a physician visit; those who received physical therapy after a wait of at least 14 days; those who received "adherent" physical therapy (reflecting evidence-based guidelines); and those who received "nonadherent" physical therapy. The study contributes to a growing body of evidence demonstrating that early physical therapy for low back pain lowers costs, and that beginning low back pain treatment with advanced imaging increases costs. "Physical therapy as the starting point of care in your low back pain episode can have significant impact," said lead author John D. Childs, PT, PhD, in a PT in Motion News article about the study ("Early Guideline-Based Physical Therapy Results in Health Care Savings for Patients With LBP" - April 9, 2015). "Receiving physical therapy treatment that adheres to practice guidelines even furthers that benefit." Dr. Chad M. LaChance, PT, DPT, ATC, CSCS Chad is polite, professional, and always respectful to those around him. He is always willing to help others when needed, and he has a good sense of humor. COAST Physical Therapy Newsletter - Summer 2016

COAST PT IN THE COMMUNITYIt’s summer! And so far, it’s been a hot one, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting out into our local community and helping others! COAST Physical Therapy was present at Majorpalooza in May, and we had a great turn-out from the runners visiting our table with questions about injuries. We were present at an Auburn Doubledays baseball game in June where members of the local COAST Physical Therapy Little League team came to visit us! Check out our Facebook page for some great pictures of the COAST PT Little League team players as well as our very own Mike Giltner throwing out the first pitch! COAST Physical Therapy sponsored the Total Soccer Experience soccer camp at Ultimate Goal in July. What a great group of kids and coaches! You will also see us at The Great Race on August 14. We will have a COAST PT team racing as well as a tent to help participants with any aches or pains they may be having. We will be back at Falcon Park on Friday, August 5, so please stop by and check out our table! If you are interested in having one of our doctors of physical therapy speak at your place of employment, local community center, or racing event, please contact Mike Giltner at 315-253-3291. COAST PT loves being present and active in our local community!

Nominations for Physical Therapist of the Year AwardLast year, one of our very own physical therapists, Dr. Chad M. Pens, owner and president of COAST PT, was awarded the 2015 Physical Therapist of the Year award. This distinguished award is provided through the CNY Business Journal and is voted on by the community. What an honor and great distinction to receive such a prestigious award from our community members. The voting for the 2016 Physical Therapist of the Year award is now open, and we would love for you to go to the CNY Business Journal website, click on Biz Events, and find the Excellence in Healthcare Awards icon. You can vote for any of our fabulous physical therapists for PT of the Year! We think they deserve it, don’t you?!
