2.0 Surface Drainage

The natural drainage pattern of the city consists of a system of rivers, natural channels and reservoirs. In order to study the drainage pattern of the city, there is a need to understand the topography & geography of the study area. There are two large lakes (having an area of about 45.5 hectares) within the city limits. Due to hilly terrain, Talegaon Dhabade City has a natural drainage pattern with sufficient gradients to drain off storm water easily in to the two main natural drainage channels

2.1 Topography

Talegaon Dhabade city is rich in natural resources. It is situated at an altitude of 636 m above mean sea level. Modulated level ranging between 600 m-700 m Above MSL. The entire area is having a slope from north to south. The city of Talegaon Dhabade is surrounded by river Indrayani on the north, river Pavana on the south. The town has a number of streams and canals passing through the city in the north-south direction. The topography is undulating and there are several undulations in the town due to number of hillocks and valleys located within city limit.

2.2 Soil

Due to hilly terrain and due to the western Ghats .starta generally observed in the city is small depth of soil at the surface followed by hard to very hard murum, soft rock and solid hard rock , but the central part (ward no – 7,8,9,10,18,22,23) has soft and hard moorum.

Being situated in western part of the top of Western Ghats, the average annual rainfall at Talegaon is quite good. The climate of the city is very pleasant and dry.

2.4 Artificial Drainage

About 20% of the city area is not covered by surface drains. The total length of existing surface drainage in the city is about 620km. About 10 to 12 km length of surface drain is added each year. As per the household survey conducted it was found that 30.1 % of the area has a poor drainage condition.

(Source: household survey IIT KGP Student)

2.5 Existing Situation

1. The drainage of the city is borne by the rivers Indrayani and Pavana.

2. The direction of flow of streams and nallas in the eastern part is north to north ( indrayani

River) and in western part it is north to southwest (Indrayani River).

3. Water logging area in TMDC has only in 5.1 % areas are affected.

2.6 Existing Storm Water Drainage

DELL, 02/10/12,
About 5.1% of the TMDC area are affected by water logging.
Page 3: Physical Infrastructure Talegaon Final22

Talegaon Dhabade municipal council (TDMC), the nodal agency for such provisions, Although the natural topography of the city helps in gravity drainage, there are pockets of water logging. Besides, natural drainage courses require rehabilitation, as they are choked with disposed solid waste and encroached upon, particularly by the urban poor.

TMDC is the nodal agency for storm water drainage. Although the natural topography of the town helps in natural discharge of water under gravity there are water logged areas. The conditions of these water logged areas are further worsened by choking from disposed solid waste and are encroachments by the urban poor.

WATER SUPPLY

3.0. EXISTING SCENARIO

At present, the TDMC is receiving water from Indrayani and Pawana rivers. The capacity of Pawana river and Indrayani river is 3.15 mld and 13.5 mld respectively.

However the actual supply is 9.5 mld, which is not sufficient to cater to the whole town. The ground water level in the city has dropped drastically due to extensive withdrawal

of groundwater. The area covered by Tapodham treatment plant is ward no -1 and 6 and north side of

Talegaon. The frequency of water supply is one in a day.

3.1 Sources of water

scheme :(13.5 mld) at Pavana river

Pavana River at Somatane village is the main source of water supply for TMDC .Pawana river is perennial as water is released from pavana dam regularly. Pavana dam is approx 14 k.m. away from the existing head work of Talegaon scheme.

3.2 WATER TREATMENT FACILITIES

Page 4: Physical Infrastructure Talegaon Final22

Presently, there is 1 water treatment plant of 5 mld capacity in the Talegaon dhabade. This treatment plant is located in tapodham area of TDMC. Needful chlorination arrangement is installed for disinfection of treated water.it has Flash mixer and chlorifiar bridge.

The city population is drinking treated underground water which is good for health for the city population.

3. 2.1 SCHEME WITH INDRAYANI (5MLD) RIVER

5MLD (1.97 Lakh lit/hr) (scheme commissioned in feb 2009), the indrayani river in presently not perennial but but due to letting out water from two dam(Vadiwale Dam & Andra Valley dam) ,the dam owned by Resource Department of Government of Maharastra (GOM) has ensure the supply of 3.15ml to capacity to TMDC in 16 hour .

3.2 .2 WATER TREATMENT PLANT

A conventional water treatment plant of 5 MLD capacities (in 24 hour) with rapid sand filter is constructed. This treatment plant is located in Tapodham Area of TMDC. A chlorination arrangement is installed for disinfection of treated water.

The total no of households in Talegaon dhabade is 13811 (2011 census) (considering a household size of

…) while at present individual water connections are only ------, showing only -----% coverage.

Apart from this, there are ------- public taps and ------ commercial connections. None

of the connections is metered.92.6 % of people. Have individual tap connection; about 95 % of the people are depended on municipal water supply. Average duration of water supply is 1.0 hour/day.

•There is no scientific evaluation of how the pipe lines are to be connected to the households.

•There is wastage of water and inequity in water distribution.

•Water tariff is collected at the rate Rs800 per month year household, based on fixed

Slab system.

3.10 PRESENT WATER SUPPLY ARRANGMENT AND DISTRIBUTION NETWORK

Water supply distribution in Talegaon dhabade town comes under the Municipal Corporation of Talegaon dhabade. The Corporation supplies 562500 lit/hr or 11.25 MLD (approx..) water per day to the town.

Map 1 Existing location of tube wells & tube wells

3.21 WEAKNESSES

Surface water of the river is much polluted as industrial waste is discharge into the

Rivers without treatments.

The existing water supply network is in a very dilapidated condition. Concrete roads are being made in the city making it difficult to install new lines and

repairs.

People are not willing to adopt measures for water treatment and other precautions.

Both PAVANA and INDRAYANI are the seasonal river and INDRAYANI lies on the lower end of the existing slope.

3.0 Scheme for water supply

TMDC has started procedure to get Permission from W.R. Department to Lift additional 10 mld water from indrayani river,

3.0 Sewerage System in Talegaon

The Talegaon town has no existing sewerage system .but is proposed to provide a full- fledged sewerage system for the entire town under the MSSS&NA and the proposal of sewerage is already submitted to .M.J.P. BY TDMC In January 2009.

Presently, there is no Sewage treatment Plant (STP) working in Talegaon , IN TMDC area , there are approx 340 public water supply & approx 6250 private Toilet .most of them are newly constructed Houses, bungalow ,residential, apartment, commercial/offices Where as in old gaothan Area , mostly there is no private toilet & and resident of that area mostly depend on public toilet facility. the treatment provided to the sewerage from the exiting toilet anaerobic treatment though Septic tanks, the waste water from many septic flow though the open surface drain and create unhygienic condition, further, such waste water ultimately goes to indrayani river and ex. Lakes. has a resultants into contamination of pure water source for Talegaon, dehu and Alandi town.

17.37. % has a sewerage network but this is mostly in big Township Residential colony and rest of the area is dependent on septic Tank.
