Physical & Chemical Properties &
ReactionsLearning Target 5a
(LT5a): Describe the physical and chemical properties of a substance. Classify changes a substance undergoes as physical or chemical changes.◦ Meets:
Identify examples of physical properties Identify examples of chemical properties Differentiate a physical reaction from a chemical
reaction◦ Exceeds:
Given a reaction, I can explain and defend whether or not it is a physical or a chemical reaction
Learning Target
Properties of Substances
Physical Properties: are able to observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance.
Examples:◦ Color◦ Odor (smell)◦ Density (mass/volume)◦ Malleability (ability to bend)◦ Elasticity (ability to return to its original shape)◦ Conductivity (ability to flow energy, heat, or
electricity)◦ Insulator (resisting flow of energy, heat, or
electricity)
Physical Properties
Only are able to be observed when the identity of the substance is changed
Examples:◦ Flammability◦ Reactivity
Chemical Properties
Any change which does NOT change the identity of the substance◦ The same chemicals are
still present Examples:
◦ Mixing◦ Dissolving◦ Melting◦ Heating/cooling
Physical Change
Any change which results in a NEW substance◦ New chemicals are created
Evidence of a chemical change:◦ Color change◦ Gas production◦ Temperature change
Chemical Change
Example: Paper
Change: Physical or Chemical change? ..Why?
Observations… Wad:
Tear:
Soak in water:
Burn:
