Physics: Page 1 of 2 Investigation: Addition of Vectors Aim: To demonstrate addition of vectors Equipment: Force meters / spring balances (%2) Weights (at least 45) String Protractor Ruler Method: 1. Cut some string and tie to the meters as shown. Attach weights. 2. Hold the two meters up in the air. 3. Adjust the weights so that it is directly between the two meters along the string (use a ruler to measure the distances). 4. Measure the angle between the two meters (marked θ on the diagram) using a protractor. 5. Read the forces along each component from the two meters, and record this in a table (readings 1 and 2). 6. Using the same set of weights, setup the equipment by hooking the weights onto one force meter / spring balance. 7. Read the weight force of the weights and record (reading 3). Risk Assessment: This is a relatively safe experiment. However, you must be careful not to drop a large amount of weights on someone accidentally, or to swallow the weights. String left carelessly behind may trip someone unsuspectingly.
