External Lightning Protection

Lightning partial currents can enter a the building and influence or even destroy electrical/electronic equipment. This induction of lightning partial currents into the installation can be avoided by utilising on isolated air-termination systems.

The HVI conductor light is the system for keeping the separation distance between down conductors and electrical systems to a minimum whilst avoiding inductance. Uncontrolled flashover e.g. through the roofing to metal or electrical parts underneath will be avoided by the high-voltage resistant insulation of the HVI conductor light.

–TheHVIconductorprovidestheequivalentseparationdistances≤0.45m(inair),ors≤0.90m(solidbuildingmaterial).

– The HVI conductor light meets the requirements according to IEC50164-2.

HVI CONDUCTOR LIGHT

For closing both sides of the HVI Conductor light when connecting the conductor e.g. to the terminal plate at the air-termination mast or to other parts of the external lightning protection system. Including heat-shrinkable sleeve / packing unit.

For more than 15 years, DEHN + SOHNE has been engaged in developing lightning and surge protection concepts for photovoltaic systems. The protection systems are as follows:

Equipotential BondingFor reasons of lightning and surge protection, it is strongly recommended to integrate the PV frame into the equipotential bonding. This should be done with 16mm² Cu at the PV frame.

- A continuously conductive connection of the PV frames has to be ensured.

- The equipotential bonding conductor is connected to the main earthing busbar of the building on ground level.

- The functional earthing conductor has to be installed in parallel and in close contact with the d.c. and a.c. cables / conductors and components.

Protection, Isolation and Enclosures

This Standard includes several additional tests to verify the fuse performance when used on photovoltaic networks.

- Cyclic loading to verify the fuse does suffer from thermal drift.- Verification of functionality at extreme temperatures.- Verification of the time constant of 1.35 x In.

AS5033 requires thermal string protection when 3 or more arrays are connected in parallel. The reasoning, should a fault occur in one array the other two strings will be able to provide sufficient current to trip the fuse in the string where the fault occur. If fuses were used in a two string system should a fault occur in one string the possible fault current would not exceed the ratings of equipment within the string.

DC String/Array Protection

Fuse ProtectionWhen a fault occurs in a DC circuit, the absence of natural voltage zero makes the interruption of DC faults more difficult than the interruption of AC faults as only the fuse arc will force the current to decrease to zero. The correct interruption depends on three parameters the value of the DC voltage, the value of the ratio L/R (time constant) of the fault path and the value of the fault current.

Photovoltaic arrays are a natural current limited source of energy, this means they do not produce very high short circuit currents. The result of the low level overload current in photovoltaic equipment is a very arduous condition for a fuse! Consequently, special photovoltaic fuses gPV fuses have been designed in order to ensure peoples safety and that of the photovoltaic system. The new fuse range from Ferraz HP6M and HP10M are designed to meet the requirements of IEC Standard IEC60269-6 covering protection of solar photovoltaic energy systems.

String Isolation

AS5033 requires the use of DC isolators to disconnect the PV arrays from the network. These isolators are used for system maintenance, panel cleaning or in the case of an emergency situation, shutdown. Should emergency services be called to a site fitted with photovoltaic system, safe disconnection of all power supplies is required to maintain a safe work space for the emergency workers.

As a result many states have made it a local requirement to have 2 isolators on a PV system. One is positioned at the inverter as per AS5033 and a local requirement under local service rules a roof top isolator at the solar array. With the revision of AS5033 its is hoped to have this rule harmonised across all states and territories.

A further change in the market in the coming months with the revision of AS5033, circuit breakers of non polarised design will only be permitted on PV networks. This means where array isolators are installed only DC switches and non polarised MCB’s can be used.

As highlighted previously, protection of photovoltaic arrays can prove challenging, switching of PV systems

Enclosures and Combiner BoxesDue to the nature of the PV systems, that is outdoors exposed to the sun, its important to have switchgear housings which will stand the test of time. The minimum life span of a photovoltaic system is 20-25 years, you need an enclosure which will maintain its IP rating over this time.

Combiner boxes are in simple terms an area where multi arrays are connected to a central point. From here multiple combiner boxes can be connected to feed the system inverters. Combiner boxes can be just a termination point or can include fuse holders, surge protection terminals etc. Combiner boxes also are a point of isolation for the arrays. Here large DC isolators can also be housed to switch off the system for regular maintenance or upgrade.

also provides its own unique requirements. As there is no zero crossing point with DC voltages, extinguishing the arc is critical to a good switch design.

There are several features to a switch design which must be used in DC switches to provide a effective and efficient operation.

Grid Tied Inverters

Grid tied inverters converts the power of the sun generated in photovoltaic panels into alternating

current which we can use to power our homes and businesses. The solar cells in the photovoltaic modules convert the sun’s energy into DC electrical current. This DC current is feed into a grid tied inverter that changes the DC electricity into AC electricity in order to run household appliances and equipment.

The AC electricity flows into you electrical switchboard to supply power to your home and if your system produces more electricity than you use, the excess

electricity is sent to the mains grid. This in effect makes your electricity meter run backwards. In reality you have a second meter which records the energy generated by your PV system either a Nett or Gross amount. The utility will pay you for the excess power generated which you do not use, the value of the varies across the states depending the legislation in place at the time.

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT)

A maximum power point tracker (or MPPT) is a high efficiency DC to DC converter that presents an optimal electrical load to a solar panel or array and produces a voltage suitable for the load. PV cells have a single operating point where the values of the current (I) and Voltage (V) of the cell result in a maximum power output.

These values correspond to a particular resistance, which is equal to V/I as specified by Ohm’s Law. A PV cell has an exponential relationship between current and voltage, and the maximum power point (MPP) occurs at the knee of the curve, where the resistance is equal to the negative of the differential resistance (V/I = -dV/dI). Maximum power point trackers utilize some type of control circuit or logic to search for this point and thus to allow the converter circuit to extract the maximum power available from a cell.

Traditional solar inverters perform MPPT for an entire array as a whole. In such systems the same current, dictated by the inverter, flows though all panels in the string. But because different panels have different IV curves, i.e. different MPPs (due to manufacturing tolerance, partial shading, etc.) this architecture means some panels will be performing below their MPP, resulting in the loss of energy.Some companies (see power optimizer) are now placing peak power point converters into individual panels, allowing each to operate at peak efficiency despite uneven shading, soiling or electrical mismatch.

In a grid-tied photovoltaic system, the grid is essentially a battery with infinite capacity. The grid can always absorb surplus PV power, and it can cover shortfalls in PV production (e.g. at night). The MPPT in a grid tied PV system will always operate the array at its peak power point unless the grid fails.

Solar Terms

Irradiance, insolation and peak sun hours are terms often used by solar engineers when designing a system for your needs.Solar radiation varies continuously from sunrise to sunset and depends on cloud cover and sun position. The maximum irradiance is available at solar noon, between sunrise and sunset.Irradiance is the amount of solar power striking a given area and is a measure of the intensity of the sunshine. PV engineers use units of watts (or kilowatts) per square meter (W/m2) for irradiance. Insolation (now commonly referred as irradiation) differs from irradiance because of the inclusion of time. Insolation is the amount of solar energy received on a given area over time measured in kilowatt-hoursper square meter (kWh/m2) - this value is equivalent to “peak sun hours”.

Combiner boxes are in simple terms an area where multi strings are connected to a central point. Included in this enclosure can be fuse protection, surge protection, DC monitoring and a point of isolation. If 3 or more strings are combined, fuse protection is required to protect each sting in accordance with AS 5033. Under certain circumstances surge protection is required at combiner box as well.

IPD has a complete range of enclosures from Hensel which are ideal for this application.

AC Combiner Boxes

In large solar power plants distribution is typically in DC from each string or combiner box to large inverters placed stragegically around the farm. The AC output of the inverter is then distributed to large AC switchboards. From here the AC can then be stepped up to MV to feed the main utility grid.

In some installations the choice is to use smaller inverters at the array can beneficial. The output can then be distributed in AC at lower currents and can be combined in a standard AC DB. This type of distribution can provide economies and therfore cost savings. IPD has a complete range of AC Distribution boards using GE MCBs and

MCCBs. Available in 316 Stainless steel or powder coat mild steel, IPD has a DB to suit all applications.
