Photosynthesis & Respiration

What happens during photosynthesis?

• Plants “capture” light energy and use that energy to make glucose.

Oxygen is also released in this reaction

What happens during photosynthesis?

What is the Equation for the Chemical Reaction of

Photosynthesis?

What is the equation for the chemical reaction of

photosynthesis?

Describe Photosynthesis• The process of converting light energy to chemical

energy.

• Occurs in multicellular plants and some protists (algae)…. PRODUCERS!!!!!!!

• The reaction takes place in the chloroplasts, using chlorophyll, the green pigment in plants

• This converted energy is stored in the chemical bonds that make up molecules of sugar.

Describe Photosynthesis

What happens to all the sugar, glucose or FOOD that is being made during photosynthesis???

• The sugar is moved through tubes (phloem) in the leaf to the roots, stems and fruits of the plants.

• Some of the sugar is used right away by the plant for energy; some is stored as starch; and some is built into plant tissue

OK. This is just a little too freaky to me.

•I mean I get it.

•Photosynthesis is a process or chemical reaction.

•It happens in the chloroplasts in the leaves.

•But how does everything just so conveniently do this?

•Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof!!!!

What is Photosynthesis?

The process of photosynthesis is a chemical reaction.

Is it the most important

chemical reaction on our planet?

•Carbon dioxide enters the leaves through openings called stomata.•Water travels from the roots of the plant up through the vascular system to the leaves. •CO2 combines with the water (H20) in the chloroplasts in the presence of sunlight through a chemical reaction to make glucose. •There. PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!!!

Why is this important to us?

Why is this important to us?

We cannot make our own food (glucose, energy), we must get our food from plants.

Plants are the first step in the food chain.

Why is this important to us?

The oxygen released during photosynthesis is necessary for all living things.

What is the equation for the chemical reaction of

photosynthesis?

Six molecules of carbon dioxide react with six molecules of water to form 1 molecule of

glucose and six molecules of oxygen.

What is Cellular Respiration?

What is Cellular Respiration?

• The release of chemical energy from glucose or sugar.

• This energy is used by cells so they can perform their job or function.

• It happens in the mitochondia of cells.

Describe Cellular Respiration

Describe Cellular Respiration

• The breakdown of glucose molecules to release energy

• Takes place in all living things

• Is a step by step process

• Happens in the mitochondria of cells.
