    Photoshop: Pattern Design for Scrapbooking

Do you like scrapbooking? Do you like Photoshop? Good. Now let us combine the two. In this

Photoshop class, participants will create pattern designs in Photoshop that can be used in

    scrapbooking. Join us.

Some basic familiarity with Photoshop is recommended if you wish to attend this class.

    ****

Let us start with a stock photo.

I found this lovely photo of an owl online:

    https://pixabay.com/en/european-eagle-owl-bird-of-prey-owl-2010346/

Next step is opening Photoshop Elements (v11)

    and opening the said photo.

We should use the rectangular marquee tool

found in the (select portion of the) toolbar.

You will select an area on

    the owl’s chest.

    Next is clicking on Edit

    Define Pattern from

    Selection.

You will decide on a name

    for your pattern. In my

    case, this is “Owl Pattern

    #1”.

Go ahead and create a new blank canvas to work on.

    File New Blank Image

My canvas will be 1800px X 1200 px (300dpi with transparent background).

Once that is done click on

    Edit Fill Layer

In the pop up window select “Pattern” and find your patter from the drop down menu. It will

be there. Once you have found it click “OK”.

Now the edges will not always be seamless. Use a combination of tools such as blur or healing

brush in order to smooth out the edges. Make sure to create a New Layer and if you are using

a healing brush select to make changes on all layers, otherwise nothing will happen -- as the

    new layer is empty.

    Before and After

using healing brush all over the edges. Do you see the difference? Thank you owl!

This is one of the trickier techniques. However, doing the process of creating new patterns with

simple shapes found in Photoshop stock is much easier. Even drawing you own shapes are easier

    to manage.
