ADOBE PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM MOBILE 1 - THE MISSING FAQ

On the 19th February 2007, Lightroom 1.0 was officially released for Windows and Mac. Just over 7 years later, Lightroom took another huge step forward, this time introducing Lightroom 1.0 for mobile devices.

Initially released for the iPad, then the iPhone, and now for Android phones, it allows you to sync your photos from Lightroom on your desktop to the Lightroom Sync cloud, and back down to your mobile devices. Using the Smart Preview technology introduced in Lightroom 5, smaller versions of your photos, including raw files, can be synced to your mobile device without taking up too much bandwidth or space.

Once the photos have downloaded to your phone, you can browse through them while relaxing on the sofa, traveling on the train, or even sitting on the beach (although you might want to be careful about getting sand in your phone!)

Unlike many other apps, however, you’re not just limited to browsing. Lightroom allows you to refine your photos, marking them with flags and star ratings, and those changes are automatically synced back to your desktop Lightroom catalog.

It can be difficult to decide whether a photo’s worth keeping without first making some basic Develop adjustments, so Lightroom goes further, allowing you to edit the photos on your phone. And like the flags and stars, these non-destructive Develop settings are also synced back to the desktop.

Then you can organize the photos, copying or moving them into different collections. These groups of photos appear in the Collections panel when you return to the desktop.

Finally, you can share your edited photos with others directly from your phone, displaying a slideshow, sharing via Facebook, Twitter or email, or by sending them to another app of your choice.

But what if you’ve shot some photos using your phone? Lightroom can import any JPEG or PNG files and upload them to your Lightroom catalog automatically, so you don’t even have to wait until you get home to start editing them.

Before you get too excited, Lightroom mobile doesn’t offer the same feature-set as Lightroom for desktop. Mobile apps are better for their simplicity, and some tasks are better suited to a touch environment than others.

There are a number of features I’d like to see introduced to the mobile app, and I’m sure you already have a list too. It’s early days, and the mobile app will grow over time, just like its desktop companion. The first Lightroom public beta for the desktop didn’t even have a crop tool, but look at it now!

Like the desktop app, you have the opportunity to help shape the future of Lightroom mobile.

Lightroom mobile won’t work alone. It’s designed to be used in conjunction with the desktop version of Lightroom, plus a Creative Cloud subscription. The desktop version does most of the processor-intensive work, and the

Lightroom Sync cloud stores the synced metadata and previews, so your photos can be accessed from multiple devices—even those with limited processing power or storage space.

WHAT ARE THE DESKTOP SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS?

On the desktop, the system requirements are quite simple—you need to be running Lightroom 5.4 or later. (5.5 or later is needed for star ratings and custom sort order, and 5.7 or later for social collaboration)

If you’re using an earlier version of Lightroom 5, download the updated version by going to the Help menu and selecting Check for Updates.

If you’re using Lightroom 4 or earlier, you’ll need to download the Lightroom 5 trial from http://www.adobe.com/go/lrdesktop (Warning—if you’re not sure that you’re going to upgrade to Lightroom 5 after the trial, use a new test catalog rather than your main working catalog, as Lightroom 5 catalogs can’t be downgraded to use with earlier Lightroom versions).

The app is currently designed for mobile phones but it may already work on some Android tablets. Tablets are expected to be fully supported in a future release. iPhone and iPad versions are also available.

DO I NEED INTERNET ACCESS?

You need a good web connection to use Lightroom mobile, especially for the initial sync. Lightroom for desktop uploads around 2 MB of data per photo on average, because it’s uploading the catalog metadata, a thumbnail, a standard JPEG preview, plus a Smart Preview for editing. That’s worth remembering if your bandwidth is limited.

You don’t always need to be online to use the mobile app, so a 3G/4G connection isn’t necessary. You can mark specific collections to download and cache on the phone while you have a Wi-Fi internet connection, and then browse those cached photos while you’re offline later. When you next have internet access, the changes are then synced back to the cloud and your desktop computer.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST, AND WHAT’S INCLUDED?

The Creative Cloud Photography Bundle costs just $9.99 a month (plus your local sales taxes). It’s paid monthly, but you’ll need to subscribe for at least a year.

The bundle includes access to the latest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop CC, so when Lightroom 6 is released, you’ll have the option to upgrade at no extra cost. It also includes your Lightroom Sync space in the cloud, which is essential for Lightroom mobile, and an additional 2GB of cloud storage space.

HOW MANY PHOTOS CAN I UPLOAD USING LIGHTROOM SYNC?

There’s no limit to the number of photos you can upload using Lightroom Sync, although the storage space of your phone may limit the photos you can access.

IS THERE A FREE VERSION OR TRIAL?

The first time you sign into Lightroom Sync using your Adobe ID, either on the desktop or phone, you’ll automatically start a free 30 day trial. It’s a fully functional trial, so you can test all of the features and decide whether it will be of value in your workflow.

The trial countdown shows in both the desktop and mobile versions, so you can make a final decision just before it expires.

HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE?

When you’re ready to sign up, the Join button next to the trial countdown takes you directly to the checkout page on Adobe’s website, or visit the Photography Bundle page to learn more: http://www.adobe.com/go/photographyplan

Figure 1.1  The trial countdown shows in the Preferences section of the app and in the Activity Center on the desktop.

The mobile app is a companion to the main desktop version of Lightroom, so before we start exploring the mobile app, let’s get the desktop set up and syncing to the Lightroom Sync cloud.

HOW DO I SIGN IN?

To sign in to Lightroom Sync, click on the Identity Plate in the top left corner of Lightroom’s window. The Activity Center window expands.

Click the Sign In button and the Lightroom Sync dialog appears. Enter the email address you use as your Adobe ID, and your password, then click Sign In.

WHAT IS MY ADOBE ID?

If you’ve ever purchased anything direct from Adobe, registered Adobe software purchased from a reseller, or even posted on their forums, you probably already have an Adobe account.

If you don’t have an account, click the Get an Adobe ID button. Follow the on-screen instructions to create an account. Adobe automatically sends a verification email, so

MERGING CATALOGS

Lightroom only syncs a single catalog, so if you have more than one catalog, you’ll need to decide which one you’re going to use.

It’s possible to merge your multiple catalogs into a single one. Since it’s only vaguely related to Lightroom mobile, we won’t go into detail here, but you’ll find those instructions in my book about the desktop app, Adobe Lightroom 5—The Missing FAQ.

HOW DO I RESET MY ADOBE ID PASSWORD?

If you think you have an account but you’ve forgotten your password, click the Forgot Password? link in the Lightroom Sync dialog. Alternatively you can go to http://www.adobe.com, click the Sign In link in the top right corner, and then click the Forgot Password? link to access the same page.

Enter your email address and press the Reset Password button. If you have an Adobe ID, Adobe automatically sends you an email containing a password reset link. Switch to your email software and click that link. The link takes you to a custom page on Adobe’s website, where you can enter a new password. You can then return to Lightroom and sign in.

Once you’ve signed in to your account, click the Lightroom icon in the Identity Plate to view the Activity Center. Your name is displayed, showing that you’re signed in to your Lightroom Sync account. If you’re running a trial version, it also says how many days are remaining in your trial period.

HOW DO I GET MY NORMAL IDENTITY PLATE BACK?

The Lightroom Sync Identity Plate is the default setting in Lightroom 5.4 or later. If you prefer to use the standard Lightroom

Figure 2.3  The default Identity Plate shows your Lightroom Sync settings, but you can add your own branding to your catalog by going to Edit menu (Windows) / Lightroom menu (Mac) and selecting Identity Plate Setup to show this dialog.

In that dialog you can select one of the two built-in Identity Plates—Lightroom Sync or Lightroom—in the pop-up at the top or you can create your own.

HOW DO I CHOOSE WHICH PHOTOS TO SYNC?

Once you’ve signed in to Lightroom Sync, you can start choosing which photos to send to your mobile device.

In the Collections panel, there are checkboxes on the left, which control which collections of photos are included in the sync. To sync a collection, click in that checkbox and the sync icon appears. To remove it from the sync, click again to remove the sync icon.

The sync is currently based around standard collections, so you can’t select smart collections or folders to sync. You can group your collections into collection sets to keep them tidy, as I have done with the Sync sets shown in the screenshot.

If you don’t have any existing collections, or you want to create collections specifically for syncing, like those shown in the screenshot, you can create new collections. There are multiple ways of doing so, but here are 2 popular options:

Select the photos then create the collection

1. Select the photos to include in the collection.

2. Go to the Collections panel and click the + button to view the menu.Figure 2.4  The checkboxes on the left of the Collections panel allow you to select which collections of photos to sync to the phone. You can group your collections into sets to keep them organized.

IF THE SAME PHOTO IS IN MULTIPLE COLLECTIONS, DOES IT TAKE UP EXTRA SPACE ON THE PHONE?

Lightroom Sync and Lightroom mobile work like the desktop version, keeping one set of previews per photo, with multiple entries in the catalog. This means that you can view the same photo in multiple collections, without the previews being duplicated on your limited phone storage.

HOW DO I CHECK I’VE INCLUDED ALL THE PHOTOS I INTENDED TO?

Smart Collections would be ideal for ensuring all of the photos shot in the last 60 days, for example, or all of your 5 star photos sync to your phone. Smart Collections aren’t yet available for sync, but there is a workaround.

Let’s use the 5 star photos as an example. Create a collection called “5 Star Sync” and mark it to sync to your phone. Then create a Smart Collection, set to “Rating equals 5 stars” and “File Type is not video” and “Collection doesn’t include 5 !Star !Sync.”

The Smart Collection checks for any photos that meet the criteria but aren’t in your 5

Figure 2.6  You can’t select smart collections for sync, but you can use them to double check all of the photos are included in your synced standard collection.

star photos sync collection. If there are ever photos in that Smart Collection, drag them over to the 5 star photos collection to be included in the sync. If everything’s synced, that Smart Collection should be set to 0.

HOW MANY PHOTOS CAN THE COLLECTIONS HOLD?

There are no known issues with large collections, other than being slightly slower to load the Grid view. I’ve tested with collections of up to 20,000 photos, but larger collections shouldn’t be a problem.

IN THE CATALOG PANEL, WHAT IS ALL SYNCED PHOTOGRAPHS?

In the Catalog panel, a collection called All Synced Photographs is automatically created. It works in exactly the same way as the All Photographs collection, but it only displays photos that are included in a sync collection. Note that deleting photos from that special collection deletes them from the catalog and/or hard drive, just like All Photographs. It doesn’t simply remove them from the sync set.

Figure 2.7  The Catalog panel holds 2 new special collections—All Synced Photographs and All Sync Errors. They update automatically, based on the photos included in your sync collections.

WHAT DO THE NEW ICONS ON THE THUMBNAILS MEAN?

When you add photos to a sync collection, additional icons appear on the thumbnails of those photos. We’ll just list the icons relating to sync.

• The sync icon simply shows that it’s included in a sync collection.

• 3 dots appearing below the sync icon means that something’s happening to that photo—it’s being synced, the metadata’s being read or updated, or previews are being rendered.

• An exclamation mark means there’s an error syncing the photo, perhaps because the original is offline. We’ll come back to fixing errors at the end of this section.

HOW DO I CHECK THE UPLOAD PROGRESS?

As soon as you add new photos to a sync collection, Lightroom starts syncing. In the Identity Plate and Activity Center, it shows a countdown of the photos currently syncing. If it can’t connect to the Lightroom Sync cloud, it says Waiting for Connection instead.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO UPLOAD MY PHOTOS?

We said earlier that you need a good web connection to use Lightroom Sync. If you’re trying to figure out whether your connection is fast enough to be viable, you can estimate how long Lightroom will take to upload your photos by visiting http://www.speedtest.net. Select a server on the US west coast, for example, San Jose. As a guide, an upload speed reported as 0.3 Mbps takes around 1 minute per photo to upload to the servers, and

Figure 2.8  The photo status icon appears on the thumbnails. The sync icon shows that it’s included in a sync collection, and the 3 dots below show that something’s happening to it.

Figure 2.9  Sync Status displays in the Activity Center, whether it’s waiting to connect to the cloud or is currently syncing photos.

24

then a little time to download back to the phone. That’s not an exact timing as multiple uploads run in parallel, and other factors may also affect upload speeds, but it’s useful as a rough estimate.

CAN I PAUSE SYNCING?

If you need to pause the sync, perhaps because you need the bandwidth for a higher priority upload, you can pause the sync by clicking the Sync toggle switch in the Activity Center. When you later click again to turn it back on, Lightroom continues uploading from where it left off.

If you close Lightroom while it’s syncing, it automatically continues when you next relaunch Lightroom.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVEN’T BUILT PREVIEWS YET?

You don’t need to manually build previews or smart previews before syncing. Lightroom builds temporary previews and smart previews as it needs them, and it automatically removes them again so it doesn’t take up additional extra disc space on your computer. If you’ve already created smart previews, Lightroom will use them, but it doesn’t speed up the sync significantly.

Figure 2.10  To pause syncing, click on the Identity Plate to show the full Activity Center, then toggle the Sync switch.

25

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE PHOTOS ARE OFFLINE?

If the original photos are offline but smart previews are available, Lightroom syncs as normal.

If the original photos are offline and there aren’t any smart previews, then a sync error appears on the thumbnails of those photos and they’re added to an All Sync Errors collection in the Catalog panel, showing that they couldn’t be synced. Next time the original photos are available, Lightroom builds the previews it needs and uploads them to the cloud.

IN THE CATALOG PANEL, WHAT IS ALL SYNC ERRORS AND HOW DO I CLEAR IT?

In the Catalog panel, a new temporary collection called All Sync Errors may appear, showing that there’s a problem syncing some photos. In many cases, there’s a logical reason. For example, if the original photos are offline and smart previews don’t currently exist, Lightroom can’t sync those photos. Those errors clear automatically when the photos are next available.

Sometimes, though, the sync can get ‘stuck’. Restarting Lightroom on the desktop and rebooting the phone clears most of those errors.

If that doesn’t clear it, try viewing the photos in the Develop module, as that sometimes gives it a nudge.

As a last resort, removing the stuck photos from the sync collection and then adding them back after the error clears usually works.

Lightroom asks for some initial preferences: whether you want to automatically import new photos from your mobile camera, and whether to use cellular data. We’ll come back to those options in more detail later.

WHAT DOES CHECKING COLLECTIONS MEAN?

Lightroom contacts the Lightroom Sync cloud for initial information and temporarily changes to a black screen with Checking Collections… in the center. Once it’s downloaded enough information to get started, it displays the Collections view. We’ll move onto viewing the photos in the next section.

DOES IT SYNC IN THE BACKGROUND, WHILE I’M USING OTHER APPS?

Lightroom mobile tries to carry on syncing in the background when the screen sleeps or you switch to another app. The operating system limits background processing depending on the other apps that are running. Repeated breaks in syncing don’t cause a problem, but it can be frustrating to find it hasn’t finished downloading your photos.

Your initial sync is likely to take some time, so you may want to force it to stay awake. To do so, go to the Home screen and tap the Settings app. Select Display and then Sleep. Set the Auto-Sleep time to a longer period. Plug your phone into its charger so it doesn’t run out of charge. Go back to the Home screen and tap Lightroom, and leave it syncing. When it finishes, go back to Settings and change the Sleep time to a shorter time to save your battery. If you need to keep Lightroom awake in future, just repeat the process.

Figure 3.4  Keep Lightroom awake during the initial sync.

CAN I LIMIT SYNCING TO WIFI ACCESS ONLY?

Lightroom mobile can use a lot of bandwidth quite quickly, so if your cellular plan charges per MB, you may want to limit syncing to WiFi access only. To do so, tap your Adobe ID in the top left corner of the Collections view to access the Preferences panel, and then check that the Sync Only Over WiFi toggle is white, not grey.

HOW DO I SHOW OR HIDE THE HELP SCREENS?

As you start to explore the app, Lightroom displays help screens. Tap anywhere to hide those screens when they appear. All of the information is included in this eBook, but if you want to view the in-app help screens again later, you can restore them. To do so, tap the Lightroom icon in the top left corner of the app to show the Preferences panel, and tap Reset Help Overlays.

A little further up the Preferences panel is the Gesture Shortcuts menu which displays some of the gestures for quick reference. All of the gestures are shown on the diagrams in this eBook.

ARE MY PHOTOS KEPT PRIVATE?

While you’re viewing the Preferences panel, you’ll notice a toggle switch marked Collect Usage Data. That only sends anonymous data to Adobe to help them improve the app.

Your photos remain private, regardless of that switch setting. They’re not shared with anyone, unless you choose to make them public using the Sharing features we’ll explore later.

While the photos continue to download, you can start browsing and ranking them. There are 3 different views. The Collections view is like the Collections panel in the desktop version, showing you a list of all the

collections, along with management tools such as rename and delete. The Grid view allows you to browse thumbnails of the photos and select which to view at a larger size. The Loupe view shows the photos individually, as well as with Develop controls.

HOW DO I SWITCH BETWEEN COLLECTIONS VIEW, GRID VIEW AND LOUPE VIEW?

In Collections view, tap on the thumbnail of a collection to view it in Grid view. Tap on a thumbnail in the Grid view to see a larger Loupe view.

To return to the previous view, press the Back arrow in the top left corner of the screen. If the Back arrow is hidden, and Lightroom is only showing the photo on screen, tap once on the screen to display the controls.

GRID VIEW

Like the desktop version of Lightroom, the Grid view allows you to view and manage multiple photos together. Options include viewing basic metadata, sorting and filtering the photos, copying and moving them between collections, and sharing them with others. We’ll come back to managing the photos in the “Managing Collections & Photos” section on page 57, but let’s continue viewing the photos first.

HOW DO I SCROLL THE GRID VIEW?

To scroll the Grid view, simply swipe up and down the screen.

HOW DO I VIEW METADATA IN GRID VIEW?

Lightroom allows you to see some limited metadata in Grid view. To cycle through the options, two-finger tap on the Grid. The first time you tap, it displays badges for flags and Develop settings, so it may be blank if you haven’t flagged or rejected any photos or made Develop adjustments. The next taps display any star ratings, then the aperture, ISO and shutter speed. The fourth tap displays the capture time, resolution and file name, before reverting to a distraction-free view on the final tap.

HOW DO I FILTER THE GRID OR CHANGE THE SORT ORDER TO VIEW SPECIFIC PHOTOS?

At the top of the Grid view is the name of the current collection and a small downward arrow. Tap on it to view the filter/sort menu.

The menu displays the filter options—Show All (no filter), Unflagged, Picked (flagged) and Rejected, then the star ratings below.

To use the star rating filters, tap on the symbol to cycle through More Than, Less Than and Equal To options, then tap on the stars themselves, just like you do on the desktop.

LOUPE VIEW

When you tap on a photo in Grid view, you’re taken to the Loupe view. Lightroom mobile’s Loupe view is like the desktop’s. It allows you to view and work with one photo at a time.

34

HOW DO I GET RID OF THE CIRCULAR LOADING OVERLAY?

The loading overlay appears while the photo is downloading from the Lightroom Sync cloud or loading from the phone’s memory. The length of time primarily depends on the speed of your internet connection, although you’ll find the Loupe view quicker than the Develop views.

If you find it slows you down, you can choose to cache the whole collection on your phone by selecting Enable Offline Editing. The loading overlay then only appears while the photo is loaded from your phone’s storage, which is much quicker. We’ll set that up in the “Managing Collections & Photos” section.

HOW DO I SWITCH BETWEEN PHOTOS?

In the Loupe view, as well as the Sliders and Presets views that we’ll explore in the following pages, you can switch between photos by swiping from left to right, or right to left.

HOW DO I ZOOM IN TO SEE THE PHOTO IN MORE DETAIL?

To zoom in to your photos, double-tap (tap twice in quick succession) anywhere on the photo. Repeat to zoom out again. The double tap moves between 2 sizes—the fit view and an enlarged view.

The spread and pinch gestures allow you more control over how much you zoom in. To use the spread gesture to zoom out, start with 2 fingers together on the screen and drag

them apart. To pinch to zoom in, start with 2 fingers apart on the screen and drag them together.

When you’re zoomed in, you can pan around the photo by dragging your finger across the screen.

Remember that Lightroom mobile’s zoom isn’t a true 1:1 or 100% zoom, as the largest previews available are 2560px along their longest edge.

HOW DO I FLAG OR REJECT PHOTOS OR ASSIGN STAR RATINGS?

Gestures are also used for flagging and starring your photos.

When the flag is showin in the bottom left corner, swiping up the screen will increase the flagging (unflagged > flagged or rejected > unflagged) and swiping down will decrease the flagging (unflagged > rejected or flagged > unflagged). As you swipe, an overlay appears on screen showing the flag rating you’ve just applied.

If you tap on the flag in the bottom left corner, it switches to a star icon and the swipe gesture then applies star ratings. Swipe up or down the screen to display the star rating overlay and tap on your chosen star rating before the overlay disappears. Or, you can flick quickly up or down the screen to increase/decrease the star rating by one star at a time (so to change a photo from 0 to 3 stars, you’d flick up the screen 3 times).

There isn’t an auto-advance option like there is on the desktop, but if you set the Grid to filter to show only unflagged photos, when you pick or a reject a photo it will immediately disappear and display the next photo. The same applies to filtering by star ratings.

Figure 4.5  When you change the flag, an overlay briefly appears on screen showing the new flag setting.

CAN I VIEW METADATA AND A HISTOGRAM IN LOUPE VIEW?

Flags/stars aren’t the only metadata you can view in Loupe view. Like Lightroom for desktop, an Info overlay and histogram are available in the top left or right corners of the screen.

A two finger tap on the photo cycles through the different views—just the Info overlay, just the histogram, or no overlays.

Like the metadata in the Grid view or on the desktop, the Info overlay offers multiple combinations of metadata. When the Info overlay is showing, tap on it repeatedly to cycle through the different combinations of metadata.

Figure 4.8  A two finger tap in Loupe view displays the Info overlay and/or the histogram. Tapping on the Info overlay cycles through these different metadata views.

BUT I WANT COLOR LABELS!

Lightroom mobile is doesn’t currently offer color labels, but there is a workaround. Create collections for each of the color labels, then use Copy To/Move To Collection to copy/move photos into those collections (see Page 62).When you get back to the desktop, you can then select all of the photos in the collection and assign the applicable star/color label.

Lightroom also allows us to edit the photos using one of three views—Sliders, Presets and Crop. We’ll explore each in turn.

The Sliders view is very similar to the sliders in the desktop Develop module. There are sliders for Basic panel adjustments, a pop-up for white balance presets, and buttons for auto settings, copying settings from previous photos, and resetting sliders.

The Presets view allows you to apply the built-in presets, such as B&W conversion, color effects, vignettes, grain, and standard sharpening.

The Crop view, of course, allows you to rotate and crop your photo.

HOW DO I APPLY AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENTS TO MY PHOTOS?

Tap the Auto Tone button to apply automatic tonal adjustments, just like the Auto Tone button in the desktop version. Tap the White Balance button to show the White Balance pop-up and select Auto to apply automatic white balance adjustments.

If you don’t like the results, you can tap the Auto Tone button again to disable the Auto Tone adjustment, or select As Shot to disable the Auto White Balance adjustment. Or you can use the Auto settings as a starting point and manually adjust the sliders to better settings.

HOW DO I ADJUST THE WHITE BALANCE?

Like Lightroom for desktop, there’s also a pop-up for white balance presets. Tap on the White Balance control to view the pop-up, and then tap on the white balance preset of your choice to apply it.

There’s also a white balance eyedropper or sampler, which allows you to set the white balance by tapping on something that should be light neutral. In the White Balance pop-up, select Pick. The sampler appears on screen, and you can drag it around by placing your finger in the center of the eyedropper or on one of the black handles and dragging. WHICH SLIDERS CAN I ADJUST ON THE PHONE?

The available sliders are Temperature, Tint, Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Clarity, Vibrance and Saturation. They work in exactly the same way as they do on the desktop.

HOW DO I ADJUST DEVELOP SLIDERS?

To select a slider, tap on it in the control bar. A slider appears above the control bar. Using one finger, drag from left to right on the slider, or right to left, to adjust it. You don’t have to grab the slider handle—dragging anywhere on the slider works.

If you find buttons easier to use than sliders, tap the triangles at the ends of the slider.

The slider value updates on the control bar below. Tap another button in the control bar to select a different slider.

IS THE PREVIEW ACCURATE?

When you’re editing your photos on the phone, bear in mind that the preview likely won’t match your calibrated desktop monitor. At a minimum, there are likely to be differences in brightness, which could affect the settings you apply to your photos in Lightroom

Figure 5.4  All of the Basic panel sliders are available for adjustment in Lightroom mobile.

mobile. It’s especially noticeable if Auto-Brightness is turned on in Settings > Display > Brightness, as the brightness of the phone varies depending on the ambient light.

HOW DO I CHECK FOR HIGHLIGHT OR SHADOW CLIPPING?

Using two fingers to drag along the slider bar, instead of one, you can view clipping warnings. It works with the Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Whites or Blacks sliders. If you find a two-finger drag difficult, hold one finger on the slider, add a second finger anywhere on the screen, and then drag the first finger along the slider.

To view the clipping without adjusting the slider, hold two fingers still on the slider bar.

HOW DO I UNDO MY LAST ADJUSTMENT?

If you make a mistake, the undo button is in the bottom right corner of the screen. When you tap undo, an overlay appears on the screen reminding you of which step you’ve just undone, and a redo button also appears. It works like Lightroom’s History panel, stepping back and forward through your recent Develop adjustments.

Unlike Lightroom for desktop’s History panel, the mobile version forgets the series of steps as soon as you move on to the next photo. When the Develop history is synced back to the desktop, the changes are recorded in the History panel as a single history state called “From LR for mobile.”

Figure 5.7  Holding two fingers on the Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Whites or Blacks slider displays a clipping mask.

HOW DO I RESET DEVELOP SLIDERS?

In addition to undoing your most recent actions, you can reset the sliders. A double-tap on the slider or on the button in the control bar resets the selected slider.

If you’ve set custom defaults, Lightroom for desktop respects those when resetting a slider. Lightroom mobile doesn’t know about those custom defaults, so it resets to the Adobe defaults, which is 0 for most sliders.

If you swipe to the end of the control bar, there’s a Reset button with a few options:

• Basic Tones resets only the sliders that are visible in the mobile app, which are the equivalent of the Basic panel on the desktop. Other settings, for example, Sharpening or Noise Reduction are retained.

• All resets all of the settings to their Adobe defaults.

• To Import resets all of the settings to their initial sync values.

• To Open resets the photo to the settings used when you last opened the photo. When you switch to another photo and back again, those saved settings are reset to.the current settings.

HOW CAN I TELL HOW MUCH SPACE IS AVAILABLE ON MY PHONE?

When you enable a collection for offline use, it tells you how much space is available on the phone. You can also check at any time by tapping on the Lightroom icon in the top left corner of the Collections view to show the Preferences panel. At the bottom of the panel is the Disk Usage bar. It shows space used by any apps, not just Lightroom.

If you need to clear some space on your phone, there’s a Clear Cache button just above the Disk Usage bar. It clears the smart previews that Lightroom’s cached for most collections, but not those you’ve selected for offline editing. To disable offline editing, tap the icon in the bottom left corner of the cover photo and then select Clear Cache to recover the disk space.

Lightroom can only use the internal storage on your phone. It doesn’t have access to additional memory cards.

HOW DO I RENAME A COLLECTION?

If you click the 3-dot icon to view the Collection menu, you have additional collection management options. One of those options is Rename Collection, which of course allows you to rename the collection. Type your new collection name and press OK. HOW DO I SELECT MULTIPLE PHOTOS WITHOUT TAPPING THEM ALL?

In some cases you’ll want to select multiple photos in one go, for example, when copying or moving photos into other collections. You could tap on each of the photos individually, but there’s a quicker way. Holding your finger on a photo in the selection grid displays a menu, allowing you to Select All, Select None or Select Range…

Select All and Select None are self-explanatory, of course. If you tap Select Range…, a checkmark starts to blink on that photo. That marks the start of a multi-select group. HOW DO THE PHOTOS I ADDED TO MY PHONE GET BACK TO MY DESKTOP?

When you return to the desktop and open the Lightroom catalog, Lightroom sees the photos on the Lightroom Sync cloud and starts downloading them to your desktop. A new volume appears in the Folders panel, showing the current location of the photos. Keep an eye on the sync status in the Activity Center in the top left corner of the screen, so you know when they’ve finished downloading. You’ll find them in the Collections panel, in a collection set called “From Sync.”

The new photos are automatically placed in a special folder (Windows) /package file (Mac) on your desktop computer, but that’s not where you usually store your photos. Once they’ve finished downloading, you can then drag the photos to the folder of your choice. We’ll come back to that in the Back on the Desktop section.

As well as importing photos manually, you can also enable Auto Import, so that Lightroom mobile automatically imports any new photos you shoot using your phone.

Only one collection can be the Auto Import collection, so I create a new collection called “Android Import.” Tap on the 3 dots in the bottom right corner of the cover photo to show the menu, and select Auto Import Photos.

Since we’re now back on the desktop, let’s discuss a few more workflow variations.

HOW DO I MOVE MY PHONE PHOTOS INTO MY NORMAL FOLDER STRUCTURE?

Earlier, in the Adding New Photos on the Phone chapter, we said that Lightroom places photos imported on the phone into a special folder (Windows) /package file (Mac) on your computer. The full folder path is:

Windows—C: \ Users \ [your username] \ My Pictures \ Lightroom \ Mobile Downloads.lrdata

Mac—Macintosh HD / Users / [your username] / Pictures / Lightroom / Mobile Downloads.lrdata

That’s a fixed location, regardless of where you store your catalog. It’s unlikely to be where you store the rest of your photos, so it may not be included in your backups. When you get back to the desktop and the sync has completed successfully, it’s worth moving those uploaded photos to your normal photo folders.

1. Go to Library menu > New Folder and create a folder with the rest of your photos, called “My Phone Photos” or suchlike.

2. In the Folders panel, find your phone’s volume. It might use the phone type, for example, mine is called “LGE Nexus 4”. Or it might say “Other Lightroom mobile device”.

3. Click the disclosure triangle to view the contents if the volume is closed, and then click on the Imported Photos folder to view the photos.

4. Using Grid view, select the photos and drag them to your newly created My Phone Photos folder in your normal photo folder. You’ll need to drag them by their thumbnails, not the surrounding borders, otherwise they won’t move.

You’ll need to repeat the process whenever you add new photos on the phone.

If you’re comfortable moving photos around within Lightroom, they don’t have to go into a folder called My Phone Photos. You can filter the photos by date to drag them into your dated folder structure, or move them into any other folders of your choice. If you usually select “Make a Second Copy” in the Import dialog, don’t forget that these photos won’t be included in those temporary backups.

CAN I STILL USE MY CATALOG ON MULTIPLE COMPUTERS?

Your single catalog can safely be opened on multiple computers, whether you keep it on an external drive that you plug in to the computer you’re using, or whether you keep a copy updated on each computer using something like Dropbox.

Figure 10.1  Photos added on the phone appear in Lightroom’s Folders panel in a separate volume.

In theory, you can sign in to Lightroom Sync on each of those computers, and any of them can update the Lightroom Sync cloud with your changes. The first sync on each computer can take many hours, while it checks the catalog against the cloud version.

In reality, I’m still finding that a little buggy at the moment, so I’d suggest designating one machine as your Sync Computer for the time being. You can still use the catalog on multiple computers, if that’s the way you’ve been working, but I’d recommend only signing in to Lightroom Sync on one of them. Whenever you open the catalog on the Sync Computer, the catalog and cloud will be updated.

CAN I SYNC TO MULTIPLE DEVICES?

You can sync your catalog to multiple devices. At the moment that’s limited to iPads, iPhones, and Android phones, but Android tablets are expected to follow.

Shared workflows are not supported yet (except using Lightroom for Web), so if you allow a friend or family member to sign in to your Lightroom Sync account on their device, they’ll be able to see all of the photos you’ve chosen to sync, and any changes they make will be synced back to your catalog and other devices. Be careful they don’t overwrite your work!

The new collaboration workflow allows social liking/commenting using a web browser on any device.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP LIGHTROOM MOBILE 1 - THE MISSING FAQ

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE SAME PHOTO CHANGES ON THE DESKTOP AND PHONE WHILE THEY’RE OFFLINE, CREATING A CONFLICT?

With many syncing situations, it’s possible to end up with conflicts, where the same photo has changed in both locations at the same time, or while they’re both offline.

Lightroom resolves those conflicts automatically. If a setting’s changed on both the desktop and the device while they’re offline, the latest change wins. For example, if you change the flag status on one device, and Develop settings on the other device, both changes will be updated. If you change the flag status on both devices, whichever change was made last is the setting that sticks.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH SYNC IF I REVERT TO A BACKUP CATALOG?

If you need to revert to a backup catalog, but the backup is recent, Lightroom will recognize it as the same catalog and compare it against the cloud data. If you’ve edit synced photos, or added or removed photos from sync collections since you created the backup, either on the desktop or on a mobile device, Lightroom warns you that the backup is too old and it automatically disables sync.

To enable sync again, go to Lightroom’s Preferences dialog, which is under the Edit menu (Windows) / Lightroom menu (Mac). Select the Lightroom mobile panel and press the Delete

Figure 10.2  If you restore from an old catalog backup, you’ll need to select Delete All Data in Preferences to start syncing afresh.

All Data button. That resets the sync, deleting the sync information from your computer, the Lightroom Sync cloud, and later the devices. It doesn’t delete your catalog or photos from your computer, but it does mean you’ll have to upload/download all of the data again. It’s a good reason to back up regularly!

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SYNC DATA IF I USE EXPORT AS CATALOG OR IMPORT FROM ANOTHER CATALOG?

If you use Export as Catalog or Import from Another Catalog to transfer data between catalogs, the Sync Collection checkmarks are not transferred. All of the settings that have already been synced are, of course, transferred into the new catalog and the photos can then be added to sync collections.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU WANT TO SYNC A DIFFERENT CATALOG?

You can only have one Lightroom catalog synced to your Lightroom Sync account at a time. If you enable sync in a different catalog, Lightroom asks whether you want to switch to syncing this new catalog.

If you click Switch to Syncing This Catalog, Lightroom removes the previous catalog from the cloud and uploads the new one. When you next open Lightroom on your phone, the old sync data is

removed and the new catalog data is downloaded. Any data that hasn’t finished syncing before switching is lost.

If you select Don’t Sync in that dialog, the sync on the new catalog is automatically disabled and your existing catalog carries on as normal.

While there’s nothing to stop you repeatedly switching catalogs, repeatedly wiping data from the cloud and reuploading everything, it takes a lot of time and bandwidth. Sticking to a single catalog is much much simpler.

CAN I SYNC MULTIPLE CATALOGS TO DIFFERENT SYNC ACCOUNTS ON THE SAME COMPUTER?

Of course there are some situations that may require separate sync catalogs, for example, separating personal photos from those you show clients, or where family members share the same computer but keep everything else separate.

In that scenario, it’s possible to pay for multiple Lightroom Sync subscriptions under separate Adobe ID’s, one for each catalog. To switch between sync accounts on the Mac, you must sign out of http://lightroom.adobe.com as well as signing out in Lightroom.

The mobile devices can only be signed in to one account at a time. To sign out, tap on your Adobe ID to show Preferences, and then tap Sign Out. You can then sign in using the other Adobe ID.

HOW DO I SHARE COLLECTIONS WITH OTHER PEOPLE?

Lightroom on the Web also allows you to share galleries with other people, without needing to upload the photos to another photo sharing website. (Rest assured, your photos remain private unless you choose to share them.)

To share a collection, click/tap the Menu button above the Grid view and select Sharing Options. If you click on Limited Public, you can then choose whether to share all of the photos or a filtered view. Below, it displays the public link to that collection. You can copy/paste it into an email or social media site, or you can use the convenient Facebook, Twitter and Google+ buttons to launch a draft window with the link already pasted. If you want to see the same view that your friends will see, click/tap the View button to open the shared gallery in a new tab/window.

If you change your mind and want to make the collection private again, return to the Sharing dialog and select Not Shared. Anyone trying to view the collection using the old link will reach a 404 Page Not Found page.

You can also share your photos direct from your Lightroom Catalog on the desktop. Right-click on the collection in the Collections panel and select Lightroom mobile Link > Share

Collection. Then repeat, but this time select Copy to Clipboard to access the link. To unsure, of course select Unshare Collection from that menu. You’ll also find the Share/Unshare buttons and the link (click to copy) at the top of the Grid view.

Note that when you share the collection from the desktop, rather than the web browser, Lightroom doesn’t offer the filtering choices.

HOW DO MY FRIENDS COMMENT ON MY PHOTOS?

Once you’ve shared the link to your gallery, your friends, family and clients can view the photos. The Grid view is almost identical to the main Grid view, but it’s missing the filter/show badges options at the top of the grid.

To ‘like’ one of your photos, they simply click on the heart icon. They currently have to sign in with an Adobe ID to like or comment on your photos, but social logins (Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.) are likely to be available in a future update.

To comment on one of your photos once they’ve logged in, they simply click on the speech bubble icon and type their message. You can reply in the same way, and the whole conversation appears above.

Figure 11.7  Friends, family and clients can mark the photos they like and add comments via the web.

HOW DO I VIEW MY FRIENDS LIKES/COMMENTS?

You don’t have to keep checking the web galleries for updates. Those changes are also pushed to your iPad/iPhone and your desktop when you next sync (not yet available on the Android app).

On the desktop, a little yellow icon on the collection indicates you have new comments. The quickest way to find the latest comments is to select the Last Comment Time sort order from the Sort By pop-up on the toolbar. The thumbnails themselves display a yellow comment badge, which turns grey when you’ve selected the photo.

The comments themselves are displayed in the Comments panel, at the bottom of the right panel group, and if you click in the field at the top, you can reply to the comments.

On the iPad/iPhone, Lightroom can send notifications of new likes and comments, and they appear on the Home screen or Notification Center. When you open Lightroom, the speech bubble in the top left corner has little lines in it when there are new likes/comments, and tapping on it displays a chronological list of updates. If you tap on a thumbnail, it switches to the Loupe view, where you can read all of the comments for that photo and reply too. That functionality should be added to the Android app in a forthcoming update.
