Describe the dynamics of this photograph. What elements contribute to them? Assess the value of the photograph.The composition (9-zone grid anyone?). How does it make you feel? Now it's your turn. Evaluate each ofthe photographs on the followingpages, applying the criteria we'vediscussed in this chapter: value,clarity and composition. (Presenta-tion is a bit hard to apply to photo-graphs in a book.) Notice the use ofnegative space in each photograph.Can the cropping be improved? Is theprimary subject well placed on thenine-zone grid? Is the photographwell balanced? How about itsdynamics? Does it work?
As you explore these and other
questions, try to determine why eachelement of the photograph does ordoesn't work. Ask yourself how youmight improve each element. Wouldthe photograph be equally or moreeffective if it were shot from a dif-ferent angle? What changes inlighting might increase the photo-graph's impact? In some cases you'relikely to see a number of possiblealternatives or improvements. Inothers you may decide that thephotograph is close to an ideal treat-ment of its subject.
Take some notes as you evaluateeach photograph. Jot down what youlike about each photograph and whatyou think could be improved: "Goodvalue range and mood; negative spacecould be enhanced by cropping incloser to face"; etc. Discuss yourobservations to see how others res-pond to the same photographs. Keepyour notes on file and check themagain in a few months to see if yourperceptions change.
