#1 Find Lovely SOFT Light...

Hand on heart, the absolute number one secret to beautiful imagery has nothing to do with fancy equipment, studio set-ups or mad skills at photoshop ... it’s having beautiful, soft and flattering light.

Taking photos outdoors on a sunny day, your subjects usually end up with scrunched up noses, strong harsh shadows on their face, and generally it doesn’t make for a great shot!

Instead, you want to look for soft, even light, in shaded areas (think patios, under trees etc) or indoors, close to a windows or doorways. Soft light is beautifully flattering for portraits as it wraps itself around a subject and means we can avoid the squinting and glariness we find when trying to photograph in bright sunlight.

Cloudy overcast days are also fantastic for taking your kids portraits, or waiting until the lovely soft light of late afternoon.

#2 Keep it SIMPLE...

You line up the camera, frame the shot of your kids dressed sweetly and smiling beautifully and you don’t even see that barbie, odd pair of socks, and unfolded laundry lying across the background, can you?

This is what we call clutter!

And the easiest way to start taking better photos is to start paying attention and clearing that clutter for a shot that shines!

Instead, choose simple backgrounds!

In order to keep things simple and help your subject pop, choose locations that have nice simple backdrops, such as a timber fence, dense foliage, a painted wall or door.

A simple background can help your subject stand out and avoid distractions in the shot that lead your eye away.

#3 Get Down Low - To Kids Eye Level

The quickest way to improve your child photography is to simply get down to their level.

Often we photograph looking down on children, at an angle which hides their face, obscures their expressions, and captures the top of their head.

Getting low will let you compose your image at eye level, and it will also allow much better interaction with your subject.

When photographing children ask questions, tell jokes, engage them in conversation and youʼll capture beautiful expressions as they join you in the fun. Remember also that those expressions are what we generally love about our children, so get in nice and close and fill your frame for a beautiful portrait.

#4 Avoid the Cheeeeese!

When we ask our kids to ‘say cheese’… they usually deliver!

And don’t get me wrong, fun cheesy smiles can be full of gorgeous personality, but natural engaged smiles will deliver us beautiful portraits of our kids that are much more authentic!

How to avoid it?

The best way is to engage our kids playfully with jokes, silliness and games that will not only deliver those natural smiles, but ensure they’re having fun and not in such a rush to make a dash when they see the camera appear!

My favourite trick for group shots of little ones it to promise that on the count of three they can tickle each other!

As you count really slowly up to that number three, watch their faces as they desperately a-wait the moment of mischievous hilarity!

It delivers beautiful smiles, and then as they get stuck into each other their fun interactive laughter shots can produce a fantastic series of fun moments that play out beautifully together in photo collages.
