Brief  •  The  Photographers’  Gallery  is  currently  under  going  a  refurbishment  and  is

due  to  open  to  the  public  in  February  2012.  As  part  of  the  launch,  the  gallery  will  host  an  exhibiFon  Ftled  The  Photograph  as  an  Object.

•  As  a  medium,  photography  has  tradiFonally  been  used  to  document  and  capture  ‘decisive’  moments  in  Fme.    The  aim  of  the  The  Photograph  as  an  Object  is  to  showcase  photographs  that  explore  the  physical  qualiFes  of  the  printed  photograph,  thus  blurring  the  disFncFons  between  photography  and  art.

•  Photographers  are  invited  to  submit  3  entries  and  a  panel  of  judges  will  select  the  most  experimental  and  original  imagery  for  the  exhibiFon.

•  In  your  project  you  must  experiment  with  at  least  2  different  techniques  •  Place  objects  on  top  of  your  printed  photographs  and  re-‐photograph

them.

Stephen  Gill   On  first  glance  on  this  image  people  could  just  think  that  this  wall  bush  bearing  fruit  has  over  grown  this  wall  but  actually  the  leaves  and  the  fruit  have  been  laid  on  top  of  the  photograph  and  retaken  with  the  objects  on  top.  'UnFtled'  is  part  of  a  collecFon  called  'Hackney  Flowers'  that  Stephen  has  created.  In  this  series  he  works  with  a  photograph  that  he  has  taken  of  something  then  he  lays  on  top  of  the  photograph  leaves,  flower  petals  and  other  things  that  are  plants  in  creaFve  ways  to  give  the  illusion  that  berries  are  over  growing  a  wall  or  a  truck  dumping  it's  cargo.  even  though  this  single  photograph  isn't  very  important  in  itself  I  believe  however  that  the  whole  series  of  'Hackney  flowers'  to  be  important    because  it  provides  the  viewer  with  the  visual  idea  to  place  objects  on  there  photographs  that  they  physically  have  and  gives  them  the  opportunity  to  lay  objects  on  there  prints  that  they  have.

EvaluaFon  of  iniFal  set  of  photos:  I  think  these  first  set  photos  are  ok  but  I  think  my  photographs  will  be  much  beVer  when  I  do  my  developmentals  when  I  burn  the  photos  and  place  objects  on  top  of  the  photographs  when  I  have  my  photographs  printed  out.

Kostas  Tsoklis   On  first  look  this  image  could  just  look  like  to  anyone  that  this  picture  is  being  burnt  away  with  no  purpose.  But  this  image  has  been  burnt  specifically  in  certain  parts  to  remove  different  parts  of  the  photo  and  to  keep  certain  parts.  Also  it  has  been  taken  whilst  it  is  sFll  burning  so  it  gives  a  sense  of  pace  of  how  fast  the  photo  is  being  burnt  away.  'UnFtled'  is  part  of  an  unknown  collecFon  of  photographs  that  work  with  the  same  sort  principle  of  burning  photographs  in  certain  parts  and  removing  different  features  of  the  photograph  like  a  person,  faces,  objects  and  certain  things  in  the  background.  The  thing  with  the  burning  of  the  photographs  has  to  be  creaFve  and  correct  for  the  best  results.  I  don't  think  I  am  going  to  work  toward  this  style  of  this  arFst  because  I  will  need  mulFple  print  outs  of  the  same  photographs  and  if  I  run  out  of  ink  it  will  not  help  me.  Also  there  is  going  to  be  a  lot  of  trial  and  error  to  get  the  best  possible  results.

David  Carson  On  first  glance  the  image  could  look  like  this  image  has  been  manipulated  and  just  had  text  placed  on  top  of  this  image  in  photoshop  and  the  photo  has  been  changed  to  look  old  Fmer  with  sepia  filter.  Well  it  is  photoshoped  but  only  the  text  and  the  effect  behind  the  text.  'UnFtled'  is  part  of  a  unknown  collecFon  of  photographs  that  have  the  same  theme  of  placing  text  on  top  of  a  old  photographs  and  adding  effects  to  the  text.  Also  each  one  has  different  text  with  each  photograph.  even  though  this  one  photograph  alone  isn't  important,  though  I  believe  that  the  whole  collecFon  is  useful  for  using  different  filters,  and  possibly  using  text  on  my  photographs  to  convey  a  message.

With  my  second  set  photos  I  was  trying  out  acetate  with  my  photos  and  layering  each  acetate  print  out    on  top  of  each  other  and  then  pu[ng  them  on  a  light  box  so  I  could  photograph  them  properly.  I  was  trying  out  the  style  of  Stephen  Gill  to  try  the  layering  affect.  Although  I  am  happy  with  photos  I  think  that  I  could  have  layered  the  a  bit  differently,  The  reason  I  say  this  is  because  I  think  I  kept  using  the  layers  that  casseVe  tape  on  them  and  I  was  using  the  tape  a  lot.  I  think  if  I  was  to  improve  this  set  it  would  be  to  try  and  place  them  more  differently  and  to  also  try  more  layers  and  also  more  photos  to  put  on  to  acetate.

Final  three

My  intenFon  of  this  set  of  photographs  and  my  developmentals,  was  to  try  out    different  outcomes  when  layering  acetate  to  create  different  ways  of  creaFng  interesFng  layers.  If  I  was  to  improve  them  further  I  would  have  more  photos  taken  on  acetate  so  I  could  have  more  interesFng  layered  pictures.  The  third  picture  is  probably  the  best  on  of  these  three  (above)  I  chose  this  one  instead  of  the  other  two  because  I  like  the  fact  that  I  didn’t  use  too  many  of  my  acetate  layers  with  casseVe  tape  all  over  because  I  think  I  went  a  bit  over  the  top  with  it  on  the  other  two.  In  conclusion,  I  am  rather  pleased  with  the  final  outcomes  that  I  have  here,  but  if  I  was  to  improve  the  outcomes  further  then  I  would  have  more  acetate  print  outs  so  I  could  have  more  layers  and  more  pictures  to  experiment  with.
