1.0 Archival Recording Details

This photographic archival recording of the structure known as the former timber drying shed, located near the centre of the North Eveleigh Affordable Housing development area, has been prepared on behalf of the Sydney Metropolitan Development Area. The entirety of the former North Eveleigh Carriageworks site is listed on the State Heritage Register.

This archival recording was carried out by Weir Phillips, Architects and Heritage Consultants, in May 2012.

2.0 Description of the Structure Rectilinear in plan, the timber shed is a single storeyed building with a gabled roof to the east and west. The roof extends over the structure by nearly 4m to the north and south sides, providing deep eaves. The structure is formed of seven bays of 300 x 300mm hardwood posts, most of which rest on timber sole plates. King post trusses span each bay with iron tie rods to either side of the king post, and a secondary bracing arm is set outside the posts to support the eaves on each side. The roof was clad in corrugated sheet, now removed, with alsynite panels providing light to the interior. Slightly below the join between each truss and post, on the inside face, is fixed a large cast iron bracket that supports a 300 x 300mm hardwood beam, which runs the length of the shed. A steel rail is fixed to the top of the beam, allowing a gantry (now removed) to function along the length of the shed. A later concrete floor was set and a kerb created along most of the west, north and east boundaries of the shed floor. The sides of the shed were also clad or left open according to the use of the building over time. The timber shed is representative of the large number of well-constructed timber sheds built throughout the NSW railway system. These sheds vary in plan and layout according to site requirements, however all share a similar structural system of timber trusses and brace supports. Surviving examples include the State listed goods shed at Canowindra, NSW. The sheds at North Eveleigh are of relatively simple construction and, while generally used as goods sheds, they were adapted for other, mainly storage, uses. There are a number of similar sheds of equal or superior design throughout the state.

3.0 Equipment Used

The archival recording was carried out in digital media using the following equipment:

• Nikon D300 Digital Camera. • Nikon AE-S Nikkor 18-105mm lens.

Photographic prints and catalogue sheets have been printed with long-life inks on Kodak Professional Endura paper, and are stored in archival quality 90-micron polypropylene print sleeves.


4.0 Recording Details

The recording comprises three folders, in satisfaction of the requirements of the NSW Heritage Office, as set out in the document Photographic Recording of Heritage Items Using Film or Digital Capture, 2006: 1 x Master Copy containing:

• 1 full set of archival 6” by 4” colour prints, numbered verso; • Archival recording report (this document); • Catalogue sheets of all images; • Plans showing the location of all photographs; and • CD containing all documents in digital format, and large format JPEGs of all

the photographs.
