PDN PHOTO OF THE DAY
Eisenhower’s AirForce OneMAR 27, 2010 01:00A.M.
© Christopher Griffith.
Christopher Griffith had nothing less than a radical reinterpretation of
American iconography in mind when he assembled a crew to travel the
sideways and byways of a forgotten America to shoot everyday,
utilitarian things found dotting our contemporary landscape. Griffith
and his team constructed huge backdrops around each painstakingly
selected specimen, creating stark, decontexturalized and utterly
magnificent renderings of the myriad of things we see and forget without
noticing. Griffith’s first solo exhibition opens on April 15th, 2010 at the
Randall Scott Gallery in Brooklyn.
Christopher Griffith trained to be a research biochemist in the field of
genetic engineering before quitting four months shy of his PhD to take
up photography. He has spent eight years in Europe working for Arena,
Wallpaper, and the international editions of Vogue and Elle. Upon his
return to the U.S. he spent four months on the road photographing
“States.” Born in Canada, Griffith was raised in the U.S. and educated in
Britain. He currently lives in New York.

Keep Calm and Snap On PrintsMAR 26, 2010 06:40P.M.
Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3
Life holds such great pleasure. Like fresh laundered socks, the smell of
library books, the release of a brand new version of Photoshop …
Though sometimes it’s easy to forget the most simplest of all: the snap of
a camera shutter. Pure. Beauty.
Which is why we love our new Keep Calm and Snap On Prints.
Their sharp design (and vibrant colors) look mighty fine. But best of all,
they remind us to sit back, breathe, and put a camera in our hands. Ahh
yeah.

Shahidul Alam: They Came ByNightMAR 24, 2010 01:01A.M.
© Shahidul Alam
Six years ago this week, the Bangladesh government formed the Rapid
Action Battalion (RAB) to crack down on criminals. Human rights
organizations report that RAB has killed more than 1,000 citizens.
”Crossfire,” a new photo exhibition by Shahidul Alam that opened in
Dhaka, Bangladesh on March 22, examines sites where the extrajudicial
killings took place, often before dawn.
I decided that all the photographs would be taken when most of the
killings had taken place,” Alam told PDN in an interview. “Since there
were many references to the flashlights that RAB used … I decided to use
a torch as the primary source of light for all the images. This also allowed
me to carefully position the light to work with available light. Most of the
images involved long exposures. The feelings I hoped people would go
away with were fear, foreboding, but also a sense of belonging. A sense
that this was a scary manifestation of places and things that were
familiar.”

Police tried, unsuccessfully, to stop the exhibition’s opening on Monday.
“I believe the only space for a journalist is at the edge, and it is only when
you are feeling the heat that you can hope to be effective, so yes, there is
an element of fear, both for me and for my colleagues, and I have
discussed it with my colleagues,” Alam told PDN. “My colleagues have
asked me to stop cycling and be driven to places, but I found that too
restrictive, but am being careful when I’m moving about.”
More on “Crossfire” and the history of the RAB can be found on Shahidul
Alam’s web site: www.shahidulnews.com/crossfire/

That’s why Swedish inventor Benny Johansson developed the

Now you can put the kibosh on dust and scratches — not to mention on
buying a new cap almost as often as you have to buy new socks.
