Photo Safari / Car Camping / Day Hiking May 26 – May 30 (Thur – Memorial Day) What: Slow day-hiking, car camping, etc with an emphasis on stopping to take a lot of pictures. Level of difficulty is MODERATE, as we will be hiking frequently on rugged trails, distances will be relatively short. Let’s face it, the west offers a cornucopia of photography opportunities. So, while there are many to choose from, there is only five days to work with so some locations have been chosen. Flexibility will be the watchword here, depending on light, clouds, driving time and the mood of the participants all destinations subject to change...just plan on heading west from Oklahoma and back for 5 days. Northern NM, just west of Black Mesa Who: Trip leader Ann Bornholdt, [email protected], cell (405) 320- 1159 When: Thursday, May 26 – Monday, May 30 (Memorial Day) Where: Oklahoma to New Mexico, see next page Why: To take pictures! If you are interested in distance, or backpacking, this is not the trip for you. How: To sign-up, e-mail the leader, there is no fee*, trip will be limited to 8 people. Departure Info: We will coordinate carpooling closer to the departure date once we know who all is signed up. If carpooling, please be prepared to pay the drivers compensation if you are a passenger in their vehicle. The Sierra Club asks that each passenger reimburse the driver $.10 a mile for gas and wear and tear on the vehicle. The mileage for this trip will be between 1,200 and 1,500 miles round trip, so each rider should budget around $150. This may seem high, but remember there will be a lot of gas and wear and tear on a trip of this distance. Northern NM, just west of Black Mesa View from Black Mesa Trail *Fees: The Sierra Club no longer charges fees for trips. However, we would suggest that you make a $25 donation to the newsletter fund. Food: There are no services in the campgrounds, but we usually stop and eat dinner on the way and will be passing grocery stores off and on, so bring a mixture of breakfasts and dinners along with snacks for the trail but don't overdo it. Equipment: This time of year temperatures should be mild to hot during the day and cool / cold at night, possibly freezing, although this is unlikely. Bring Rain Gear, as Spring in New Mexico usually means afternoon Thunderstorms. Other dayhike and car camp stuff applies, please let me know if you need help getting prepared. Call me if you need to borrow some gear. Outing Rules: No firearms or pets, kids 12+ OK if with a parent.
