Hello everyone, 2019 is really shaping up to be a fantastic year! It's really encouraging to see the level of energy that is being put toward the club. We absolutely could not make this work without the level of community involvement that I have seen. I have several new initiatives we are currently investigating to advance the club: One is the possible creation of a race team. I think there is a place for racing when it is done right and integrated with the rest of the club needs. First and foremost, we are a community cycling organization. Nothing will get in the way of that. Secondly, we are pursuing partnerships with other cycling clubs in the area. This could help us gain access to knowledge and resources to further our mission of promoting safe cycling activities in the community. Thank you again for your support and time to help make these things happen. Chris Ingram

a video is uploaded with something like a .gpx
file so that you have inclines and declines as if
you were actually on that road.
I found this to be extremely interesting.
While I looked at about ten of these apps, most
were very similar to each other with their own
little quirks. Instead of talking about each one I
settled on focusing on one in general, Rouvy.
The largest appeal that I have found in
Rouvy has been the extensive library. I could
ride a different route each day and never see
the same place twice. I can ride our own
Northeast Park Duathlon course that has been
uploaded or I could climb Alpe d’Huez if so
inclined 😊, the options are nearly endless.
Zwift and Rouvy both have a level up
system but are very different in execution.
Zwift’s distance-based system doesn’t really
challenge the rider. On the other hand, Rouvy
requires specific TSS milestones AND you must
also complete specific “race mode” tasks before
you rank up. This could be riding certain routes
or completing a climbing challenge, etc. But
they are there to ensure you are not just
spinning your cranks to level up.
When looking at the social side of the
games, Zwift is on top of it. At any time of the
day there will be thousands of riders on the
course with you. Since Rouvy has such a large
collection of routes people could be riding
anywhere in the world. If you want a social ride

Zwift is the giant among apps when it comes down to the world of indoor cycling. But,
are there any other options? Zwift came out swinging with their
open beta in the Spring of 2015, and I
started riding on the 3D world of Watopia
later that year. It was a wonderful
experience, and personally at that time I
couldn’t figure out why anyone would want
to do any other training program if they are
stuck inside.
Fast forward to January of this year
and I feel that love for Zwift is gone. Maybe
it was the look or the “power-ups”. It could
have been that I couldn’t ride where I
wanted to on that day. Whatever it was, Zwift
had lost its appeal to me and I had to find
something else.
Zwift is in a class by itself in the 3D
realm. While there are a few other 3D virtual
options out there, none of them are as
polished as Zwift. Most 3D options were low
quality, unfinished worlds that just made for
a dreadful session that I would not wish on
anybody.
There were options such as Sufferfest,
which put you on a race course video and
then you do overlay structured workouts. I
was just wanting to ride not really looking
for structured workouts, and being stuck in
a giant fake pack just increased my anxiety.
I then stepped over to the world of
“real world” simulators. There are a ton of
options when you look at this group of
training apps. They all follow the same basic
principal:
February Meeting We will not be having a speaker at
the February meeting. Instead, we
will have various bits of sample

they can get the right fit for our new

Last month David resigned from the position of
treasurer. While we all wish him the best in his future
endeavors this now leaves the club with a vital position
empty.
The Executive Board is looking for a member who will be
able to move forward with the work that David has
provided and continue to help the club grow. If you
would like to be considered for the position, please let
someone from the executive board know.
Position Description:
The Treasurer shall be the chief financial officer of the
club and shall be responsible for the security of the
clubs funds and other assets.
Any member who wishes to become the new treasurer
must be voted in at a club meeting.
Indoor cycling… Cont. from pg. 2
you must join a posted group ride or race to
have others with you. While for someone like
me who enjoys the solo ride this is great,
others may find it a bit boring.
As far as structured training plans go,
they both have them. Not much to say about
training plans since they are pretty much the
same across every platform available.
Overall, the Zwift team have made a great
app to stave off the indoor boredom for $15 a
month. They have enough routes to keep a
rider entertained, beautiful scenery, and loads
of people to ride with. But it all feels like a
game more than a training app.
Rouvy feels like a training program, and if
you are willing to pay the annual premium plan
it comes out to $10 month. On a large TV with
a smart trainer it feels more like I am on an
actual route. When I load a route, I know it will
be different scenery, which helps keep my
interest. There are no fancy rewards for leveling
up, but I feel I have accomplished something
when I do. These are things I don’t get with
Zwift, even though I would like to ride with
others in the club.
In the end, Zwift is a great program to
use while stuck inside. But it’s not our only
option. There are about 20 well established
companies that offer indoor programs of some
type. They all have their strengths and
weaknesses, you just have to decide on what
you are really looking for.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen, some of you may know me others may not. My name is Jamie Jones and
I’m the new Ride Coordinator for Burlington Velo Club. I’ve been
riding bikes all my life and over the past 2 years I’ve fallen in love with
road cycling. I’ve logged almost 7000 miles since April of 2017. I work for Food Lion as an
assistant store manager. I enjoy spending time with family and
playing golf. If any of you have questions about routes we ride or want ideas
for different routes, you can email me at [email protected]. I’m also
available to ride during the week. We would love to have some mates join us for some rides out to
Yanceyville, explore southern Alamance County, or check out
Guilford County. For more info please feel free to contact me at: [email protected]
Saturday February 2nd ACE Speedway
What a wonderful day of racing we had at Ace. Three of our club members made their way to
enjoy some beautiful weather and full speed action!!
Sarah, racing for Electric Banana, had a great run in the CAT3/4 women’s division. With her pace
averaging just over 22 mph she worked hard to help keep her teammates in good positions
through the race and she finished mid-pack.
Chris and Peter, both running independent, had a tough battle all day in the CAT4/5 race. The high
pace, over 26 mph, split the pack multiple times but both guys were able to get back into the lead
group and finish in 9th and 15th positions.
Chris was the only club member to race the entire Winter ACE SPEEDWAY Series and finished
overall in 7th place.
Race Recap
Saturday January 26th ACE Speedway
The CAT 4/5 racers had a short day of racing due to
two wrecks which required the field to be stopped
while EMT’s had the track full. Chris was able to
avoid both incidents, led four laps, and completed
the race in 13th.
Even though there were no major break-away’s, the
pack kept a fast pace averaging almost 25 mph with
lap times in the low 0:40’s.
How’s that winter training going for you?

Route Spotlight “Gears and Cheers” 60
Ever since I started doing charity rides the “Gears and Cheers” 60-
mile has been one of my favorite routes. The gentle rolling hills headed into
Reidsville, the speedy drops, the climb on Grooms Rd., and one can’t forget
a nice drink at the Grove when done make for a memorable ride.
The MS Society no longer supports the ride, so you must do a little bit
of planning since there are not many locations to refuel on the route. Traffic is
another factor to think about, especially along HWY 158.

“As a kid I had a dream – I
wanted to own my own bicycle.
When I got the bike, I must have
been the happiest kid in Liverpool,
maybe the world. I lived for that
bike. Most kids left their bikes in
the backyard at night. Not me. I
insisted on taking mine indoors
and the first night I even kept it in
my bed.” -John Lennon
