How Our Process Works• Our process involves placing a chemical in a fine dot pattern

(replicating the tonal pattern in the original photograph) on a sheet of film, which is then placed inside the concrete form work. The concrete is poured in and allowed to set; then the form work and plastic are removed. As the panel is power washed the photographic images emerges.

• This technique delays the formation of the cement mold where the image is located, resulting in an exposed aggregate surface which becomes the image.

• We use a high-performance Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC) and the aggregate that creates the image is used throughout the entire concrete mix so the composite will last just as long as any concrete, if not longer.

• Once the photograph or artwork is submitted, we create a digital screen and permanently engrave the artwork by using white cement and a colored aggregate (red, black, etc.), to achieve the contrast for the image.

create any size and thickness to withstand weight and

pressure.

*In a three step process our composites are sealed against

weather, wear, and graffiti.

*The image is embedded approximately 1/16” deep and

is resistant to ultra-violet rays.

*The quality of the of the transfer depends on the

(1) Contrast

(2) Clarity

(3) Quality (300 dpi) of the image

The black you see is the exposed aggregate and the white is the cement. Different Colors of crushed aggregate and cement tints are available

Technical Information

CostEvery project is different and unique, therefore there is no standard price per square foot. Price is derived from the following factors:

(1) The repetition quantity of a single photographic image and/or artistic design *Repetition of the same image reduces cost (2) The external outline and application of work (where and how it is to be applied) (3) Dimension(s) and size (4) Thickness/Reinforcement of work (5) Quality of the submitted image (6) Design mix (aggregate/color) (7) Shipping cost and preparation

Durant Oklahoma

For Durant Oklahoma’s Main Street Initiative we created a concrete pedestal with four significant images embedded on the face of each side.

Bellflower, California

PhotoCrete USA delivered four three section pavers for the pedestrian entrance of the historical downtown area in Bellflower,

California. The 6’ X 7’ section pavers display early photographic images of the city’s first Western Union Office established in 1930, the L.A. County Fire Department No. 23 established in 1920, and the 1950 Nubel Theatre.

Jeffrey Open Space Trail Irvine, California Our photo-engraved pre-cast panels line a 40 ft. semi-circular seat wall located off the new three-mile Jeffrey Open Space Trail, in Irvine, California. These pre-cast concrete seat backs, designed with historic photos, narrate the Irvine Family history with an imaged timeline of the city’s founders and early influences that shaped the regions development.

Presa Pocket Parks, San Antonio, TX As part of the South town Area Street Improvement project, PhotoCrete USA recreated a sidewalk with images significant to the oldest neighborhood in San Antonio, TX. Anne Wallace, an independent artist was selected by the city to consult on artistic and design enhancement features for the various ongoing city improvement projects, and chose to incorporate our photo-engraved process our as part of that enhancement."I am excited to see the finished work next month as this will be the first official use of this process in Texas. I believe the impact of this process will have far reaching implications for both the design community as well as the historical community." Anne stated.

National Building Museum, Washington, D.C.

In June, 2004, the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., began a major exhibition on concrete architecture: Liquid Stone: Architecture in Concrete, focusing on concrete’s essential function in architectural expression. At the request of the NBM, PhotoCrete USA and the NYC design firm PURE + APPLIED prepared a special piece for inclusion, “Bricklayer in Motion,” by Edweard Muybridge, who is known for his innovations in sequential photography. Designer Paul Carlos chose this specific print by Mr. Muybridge, “because his is considered one of the founders of scientific photograph, and we wanted to apply one of his works to the relatively new technology of photo-engraved concrete. We chose photography and concrete because they brought about the modern world that we live in and hopefully the audience will make these connections .”Due to an overwhelming response, Liquid Stone: Architecture in Concrete is currently running on its second extension.
