The First XV has enjoyed a very successful season although the side was fairly young. Stone played full-back and gained in experience throughout the season. There was plenty of power from the base of the scrum where Coope supplied Johnson with an excellent service. Johnson, at flyhalf, has handled the ball well and made some excellent breaks resulting in many tries being scored by forwards backing up. The centre pair, Fearnside and Coop, provided an extremely effective attacking force and both ran hard with the ball, sending their respective speed men, Hudson and Midgley, racing down the wings. In the pack Fisher has won more than his share of possession with the assistance of his two well-made props, Byrom and Poole. Dawson and Wood combined well in the second row and put up some excellent untiring performances. At number eight was Thorpe, the stalwart of the pack. Newitt had another excellent season; he combined his speed and skill in the loose to put up many fine performances as the open side flanker. Coop, Fearnside, Johnson, Poole, Fisher, Byrom, Dawson, Tate and Newitt had the honour of playing for the South Yorkshire under-nineteen team on several occasions. However Johnson had an even greater honour when he became the first boy from H.G.S. in the Yorkshire under-nineteen team when he played against Lancashire at Halifax. In January, Johnson and Tate spent a weekend in Newport (Mon.) with the Yorkshire team and represented the county against Wales on the famous Newport ground. The former went on to get a final England trial. I should like to thank Mr. Tate, Mr. Wilkinson and Mr. Pacy for training the team, and the other masters who have travelled with the teams on Saturdays. I should also like to thank the girls who made the refreshments, the honorary fixture secretaries, Vyse and Evison, and Mr. Rhodes who has laboured mightily to keep the pitch in good condition. Sevens Competitions We entered two Sevens competitions at llkley and Bridlington and our teams put up some excellent performances. At llkley we were runners-up to Heath by 12 points to nil. It was a remarkable achievement when we won the Bridlington Sevens for the first time, beating Sir William Turner's of Redcar in the final by 19 points to 3. The forwards were led admirably by Tibble and Hryschko, who were the most experienced players in the pack. It would, however, be unfair to mention any particular players, since they all played remarkably well and relied more on teamwork than on individual skill. The forwards were Baxendale, Orange, King, Moody G. W., Tibble, Shelley, Hryschko, Bancroft and Osborne. As with the forwards, the backs also relied on teamwork but when Oxley, the scrum half, left school early in the season, Hryschko had to he moved from the forwards into the vacant position. Howey and Fearnley were extremely reliable in both defence and attack. They were especially adept at creating openings for the two wingers, Hunt and Mills, who were always ready to complete the move by scoring tries. Thackray, the full back, was probably the "find" of the season, since it was the first time he had taken up rugby seriously. Although, at the beginning of the season, he caused many of the team to have heart failure, he turned out to be one of the most reliable and efficient members of the side. The most memorable game of the season was the victory over Rothwell Grammar School, when Hemsworth played the whole game with only thirteen men. Though Rothwell were a good side and played hard, tough rugby, Hemsworth, due mainly to their six forwards, managed to win 5-0. The only defeat of the season was to Wath Grammar School (who were previously beaten 16-0) and this was due largely to the absence of seven of the most reliable and efficient members of the side. Rugby Third XV Considering that the Third XV has had to find its opposition in First and Second Fifteens, it has done remarkably well. The players may not have matched our First and Second Fifteens in skill but they certainly have in enthusiasm, and this enthusiasm has made it an enjoyable season for all. They were at their best when they met Ossett First Fifteen and beat them by 11 points to 6. Special mention must be made of Marston and Skelton who proved invaluable in the backs. Wilkinson, the pack leader, was a prominent forward as were Bashforth, Caldwell and White. However, all members of the team must be congratulated on their play throughout the season. Played 8. Won 4. Rugby Colts XV

Tingle, Fradgeley, Smith, Moxon, Sykes, Pickering and Hibbert all represented South Yorkshire Under-Fifteens against Leicestershire, Merseyside and Lincolnshire. Hibbert also played in the North of England Rugby Trial the fifth boy to do so from Hemsworth in the last four years. Most of the points were scored by the forwards - the mainstay of the side, for they settled down much more quickly than the threequarters. However, the backs had their moments, especially against mighty Heath, and in winning the Sheffield "Nines" Knockout competition. The leading try-scorer was winger Sykes, closely followed by Moxon and Fradgeley. Both players had outstanding seasons, with Moxon dominating the scrummages and Fradgeley, the line-outs. Their backing-up was tremendous and often resulted in surprise tries. After three seasons without a kicker in this age group, Hibbert was finally found to be as consistent at goalkicking as he was at making breaks. This season's success emphasises the importance of keen reserves, the boys who turn out faithfully for practices week after week knowing that they are not likely to get a game on Saturday. The Colts team appreciates their support, as it does the work of Messrs. Tate, Wilkinson, Pacy and Rhodes in making the season so profitable towards the big step forward into senior Rugby next season. Pickering, N.

The under-fourteens started the season well and lost only one match in the first seven. This match, against Normanton Grammar School, was lost rather decisively by 41 points to 3. Owing to the bad weather and condition of the pitches several matches were cancelled later in the season. In the forwards, Lunn, their leader, at lock and Jones at loose-forward were outstanding and Horrobin also tackled well. Marks gave the backs plenty of possession from the line-outs and much credit is due to Dyson for hooking consistently well. In the backs the two centres Malkin and Hooker, well fed by fly-half Mills, scored most of the season's tries. Mills also contributed to the points by kicking several goals. Wingers Horsfall and Jones ran well and full back Marston saved the team often with some brilliant tackles. The team would like to thank Mr. Shelton and Mr. Smith for giving the team valuable training and experience which enabled us to enjoy a fine season. Played 12. Won 8. Drawn 0. Lost 4. Points For 232. Most of the A team leave shown that they have outstanding ability, and should improve next season as they gain experience. The Boys' Hockey Team experienced its worst season ever, winning one and drawing one of the ten matches played. However, the team has been unsettled all the season and if any progress is to he made next year there must be more enthusiasm for the game. Certainly the fourth form has provided some promising recruits and one hopes that they will stand the team in good stead in the future. I should like to thank Mr. Rhodes for his care of the pitch, and Messrs. Owen, Murray and Warren for their devotion to a losing cause. I wish all concerned with the team success next year. The First Eleven, though made up largely of new and inexperienced players, has had a fairly successful season which is not accurately reflected in the scorebook. In two matches (against Thorne and Barnsley) we were beaten on time, and we lost to Rothwell, by one wicket, through atrocious fielding. However, the annual Whit-Monday fixture with the Old Hilmians resulted in a win for the School by a convincing five wickets. Scores 1. Don Valley High School, 29. H.G.S. 30 for 3. 2. H.G.S. 53. This has been a mediocre season for the Boy's Athletic Team. Out of three matches so far, Hemsworth have attained a second, a third, and a fifth place. The latter was against strong opposition such as Leeds, Roundhay, Barnsley and Normanton, and many Yorkshire Champions were competitors. Perhaps the strong point of the team was the Intermediate Age Group who rarely lost more than two events. They were well supported by the seniors, but the juniors were disappointing. At the time of printing, Sports Day and the Yorkshire Sports have not taken place, but the stage is set for an exciting fight for the Victor and Victrix Ludorum. Strong hopes were held for Byrom, Midgeley, Cockburn, Sykes and Hawkes at the Yorkshire Championships. Fearnside D. H.
