Dear Prof Deng Wei, Prof Peng Cui and all friends, ([email protected]; [email protected])
Since March 9, 2011 Mr Winai Wangpimool and I had been your guests at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment in Chengdu (http://english.imde.cas.cn/) and you provided us an excellent opportunity to visit various sites that were affected by the earthquake, landslide and debris flow since May 2008. With help from your able staff who accompanied us to those sites, we could understand what had happened and how they were carried out – plus the loss of many lives, properties and natural resources, as well as how the government has been putting money to rehabilitate those areas.
We have especially made this DVD to thank you and your IMHE staff, which contains the following folders:
1. Message from me, plus my piano performance and the 45-page Sichuan Photo Book (2011). A PPT file describing WASWAC is also included.
2. Seventeen issues of HOT NEWS informing about various hot issues, e.g. conferences, which will take place all over the world since January 2010 up to now.
3. Ten files showing catastrophe in Bolivia caused by landslide recently. I have given files showing catastrophes in Brazil, New Zealand and The Philippines to some of our colleagues during the time we were with you - but no pictures that show catastrophe in NE Japan recently
4. HOME movie (93 minutes) in English in both low and high resolution. I also have versions in French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Thai and will produce a Chinese version for our friends in China, with help from Ms Qiu Dunlian. In the same folder there is also a link to the version with Chinese subtitles presently available on Chinese Tudou site.
5. Interesting videos – showing six high definition (HD) videos about flying, earth, humans, etc.
6. Eight files showing Let’s Talk In English, to show how to talk in English in a rather simple way.
7. Eight files showing the English lessons by Jennifer, an American teacher, now a fulltime housewife, with clear explanation. She allows people to use them freely. I am preparing altogether 167 files of her teaching and will give to you in another DVD. It can be your excellent companion in learning English, which we encourage all friends to do to enhance your career.
8. Twelve files showing the best performances of Placido Domingo, the famous Spanish tenor who came to perform in Chengdu in 2009. You will like his songs.
We are therefore presenting these works to you in this DVD disc to express our most sincere appreciation to the hospitality that you had shown to us recently.
Our mission this time has been a successful one. With discussion about the Asian Network on Debris Flow which was the result from the Debris Flow Workshop at your institute last November, it has been agreed that Mr Winai Wangpimool will act as the coordinator for Thailand and I will serve as the advisor of the Network, which itself will associate with the World Association of Soil and Water Conservation for their mutual benefits. We wish a good success to the Network which will start its operation from this year onward, with two issues of newsletter to appear this year.
Last, we would like to thank you, Prof Deng Wei, Prof Peng Cui, Ms Rongzhi, Dr Ge Yonggang, Dr Aaron Guo, Dr Fang Huihua for facilitating our visit and travel in Chengdu and other parts of Sichuan Province during March 9-20 and we look forward to working further with you in various fields. We also look forward to working with Ms Qiu Dunlian in translation and other literary areas. We hope to play host to you and other colleagues whenever you travel to Thailand.
And the very last, we want to show the picture at right to symbolize the sign of friendship between IMHE and us. You can see the eyes of the child so bright and hopeful. And so are we!!!
With our best wishes,
Samran Sombatpanit and Winai Wangpimool [email protected] and [email protected]
