Explain to the children that many people use fans to combat the heat. Show them a fan you have made by cutting out each of the ribs and joining them together at the base with a split pin. Arrange them in such a way that you can read ‘summer time’. 2. Ask the children to say the sound on each of the ribs then ask them to blend the sounds to read summer time. 3. Select the following ribs: M E E T. Again, ask the children to say each of the sounds and then to blend them to read the word: meet. 4. Do the same to create these words: sum, as, tree, must. 5. Distribute Worksheets 1 and 2 so that the children can make their own fans. You may wish to ask them to colour in the ribs before they cut them out. In groups, ask them to play with their fans to create as many words as possible. You may wish to make this a competition. Optional extension activity: Suggest that they turn the fans over and write a letter at the top of each rib, for example the letters of their name and any other letters necessary to write ten. Ask them to write a list of the words they have formed with this new combination of letters.
