Whole school conferencing is taking place next Tuesday 28 July. We welcome this opportunity at the 3 Way Conference, to give feedback on your student’s learning and progress, and identify clear next steps for learning. This is a great opportunity for you to touch base with your child’s Subject teachers and be part of their learning plan and progress to date. As parents and caregivers your support is a key element in your child’s academic success. We ask that you and your child attend these meetings together. On this day school will be closed from normal instruction. Students are to remain at home and only attend for their scheduled interview time/s with their parent or caregiver. The following staff will also be available for you to drop in and see if you would like information or have any questions: Uniform: Mrs Vicki Scott (Uniform Room/A7) until 3pm Careers: Mrs Marie Donaldson (Library) Learning Support/Reading Support/ESOL: Mrs Sue Geaney (Room A7) If you would specifically like to see your child's Learning Advisor (LA) please contact the office and we will endeavour to schedule an appointment time or arrange for the teacher to contact you. You should have received a letter detailing instructions for making your booking. Please phone the school office if you have any queries about how to book for 3Way Conferencing. A warm welcome to two trainee teachers from Dunedin who will be working in our school over the next four weeks. Ms Caitlyn Wyndress will be teaching Physical Education and Ms Stephanie Scobie will be with English and Social Studies classes. Ngā mihi nui Janette Packman MATARIKI Kia ora koutou Te Matahi o te tau, he kohinga whetū i te uma o Ranginui. The star constellation we know as Matariki has been a feature in our starry skies during the holiday break, 13 - 20 July. Matariki is a well known symbol that marks the Māori New Year (Te Tau hou Māori). Check out some of our Matariki designs at the Waimate Events centre. Courtesy of Year 9 and 10 students.

Year 7 Students of the Week Year 7 have started a new initiative this term called 'Students of the Week'. Every Friday the students in Year 7 will nominate a peer that they have noticed displaying our school values and being an all round good sort in the classroom. The two students with the most nominations will receive a prize from Miss Porter's prize box. Students who receive more than one nomination will receive a certificate acknowledging that their peers have noticed their great work.

This week's 'Students of the Week' are Sam Tiffen and Lucy Carline. Awesome job guys!

KO NGĀ UMANGA KI TE KURA MĀTAURANGA O WAIMATE WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS Update from the Careers Advisor: It has been an amazing term as I have commenced my new role as Careers Adviser. I have really enjoyed getting to know our senior students and supporting them as they make decisions on their next move. We have completed a move into the library which is now home to the Careers and Gateway programmes.

Most year 12 and 13 students have had at least one session with Courtney Young from Aoraki Development to set up their ‘My Next Move’ dashboard. Please encourage your son/daughter to check in to their dashboard regularly. There are still some students who will need to be signed on next term. These will be followed up by me.

Year 13 student interviews This term, the year 11-13 pastoral leader, Ms Julie Simpson and I will be conducting career interviews with each Year 13 student. For students in years 11 and 12, please encourage your son/daughter to make an appointment with me. I love hearing about their ideas and providing them with the information they need to help make an informed decision about their future pathways.

Gateway Programme for year 12 & 13 students The Gateway students commenced work experience last term. In term one they completed Health & Safety and First Aid courses as well as spending time exploring possible career pathways. Students were out on placement one day per week in a range of sectors including: Dentistry, Veterinary Nursing, Policing, Mechanical Engineering, Motorcycle Sales & Service, Outdoor sales, Wool handling, Sheep and Beef farming, Travel Broking, Hospitality and Aged care. We are incredibly thankful to the South Canterbury businesses who have supported our students. We welcome expressions of interest from current year 11 and 12 students who may be interested in Gateway in 2021. Please see me for more information or talk to one of our students currently involved in the programme, they would be only too glad to talk about their experience with Gateway.

Tertiary Study in 2021 Scholarships Some of the scholarships are now open and I do encourage Year 13 students to apply for these. I am happy to support, proofread and edit applications. We are regularly updating the following spreadsheet as new scholarships come in https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oQPgBEls8nQs3PuI1k3h0_FC7xmEeM0N56nVskIzqKs/edit?usp=sharing

Hall of Residence Applications These open on the 1st August and close mid-September. It is a good idea for students to research online and start thinking about which Hall they would like to apply to. As part of the application process each student needs to request a Reference from the School through the following site: https://ccrf.dotnous.com/students/

As always, please contact me if I can help in any way by emailing [email protected] Disc Golf On Tuesday 25th June, the Year 11PE class visited Victoria Park for a round of Disc Golf. This activity formed part of their requirements for the 1.1 Getting Stuck In achievement standard. Despite less than ideal atmospheric conditions, the students were all enthusiastic to throw, biff or chuck their Frisbees in the general direction of the ‘Basket’ hole. Along the way, a few found themselves retrieving discs from out of bounds or amongst the trees which closely line the course. As the round progressed, all students were showing significant improvement and control of the discs flightpath while enjoying the competitive rivalry amongst their group. Low score of the day went to Jack, who matched Mr Simonsen’s 34. Overall, a great afternoon was had, and for many this was their first taste of the game. There is a great Disc Golf set up at

Victoria Park and I would encourage all to give it a go … it makes an ordinary walk that bit more exciting!
