Many students that I spoke to menoned that they have a renewed appreciaon of school. They missed their friends, their teachers, learning with and from others, along with the many extra opportunies that school affords them. Over the next five weeks, our students and staff will be very industrious as we focus on the core subjects of English, Mathemacs, Science and HASS (Humanies & Social Science). Our teachers have carefully planned the units of work for Weeks 6-10 so that we focus on core content while also allowing our students to sele back into rounes and connue to nurture a love of learning. I would also like to thank our parents for supporng their childs learning during this me. I know that it was not an easy task balancing your many other acvies while also teaching and supporng your child at home. On behalf of the teachers, thank you for collaborang with us during the Learning@Home iniave. P&C Day - Thank you Last Friday was the nominated date to celebrate P&C Day. Unfortunately, due to current restricons our celebraons this year have somewhat been curtailed. I would however like to thank the EJSS P&C Associaon for the work that they do in supporng our students and staff. This year our P&C have once again provided funds for the following: Restoraon of the Memorial Gates as a giſt for our school s 125 th birthday. Purchasing one day a week to support our Chaplaincy program. $5,000 towards the purchasing of books for individual and group reading across P-6. $5,000 to purchase mathemacal resources to support the teaching of Number across P-6. $72,000 to purchase addional iPads, laptops and a laptop charging trolley to replace ageing devices and keep abreast of enrolment growth. Ongoing costs for student leadersbadges, Awards Evening trophies, photocopying etc.

From the Principal

Welcome Back Year Two - Six Students It was wonderful to see all of our Year 2-6 students return to school on Monday after learning at home for the first five weeks of Term Two. Many students that I spoke to mentioned that they have a renewed appreciation of school. They missed their friends, their teachers, learning with and from others, along with the many extra opportunities that school affords them. Over the next five weeks, our students and staff will be

very industrious as we focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and HASS (Humanities & Social Science). Our teachers have carefully planned the units of work for Weeks 6-10 so that we focus on core content while also allowing our students to settle back into routines and continue to nurture a love of learning. I would also like to thank our parents for supporting their child’s learning during this time. I know that it was not an easy task balancing your many other activities while also teaching and supporting your child at home. Our P&C also has many sub committees that donate a considerable amount of volunteer hours towards a variety of initiatives. I would like to thank all of our sub committees for the work that they do. Without your help, we would not be able to offer the service to our school community that currently exists. This year in particular has been very challenging due to the impact that COVID-19 has had on our events and in particular on EJ Kids’ Care. Concerning EJ Kids’ Care, I would like to acknowledge the P&C Executive and the Outside School Hours Care Committee for successfully navigating through this difficult time to ensure that we had care in place for vulnerable students and a service ready to meet the demand once students returned to school. On behalf of the school community, thank you EJSS P&C for all that you do for our wonderful school.

2 Minute Zone When using the 2 minute zone in the mornings, I would like to remind parents to drive as far forward as the 2 minute line allows before dropping off your children. Many parents are stopping at the Memorial Gates to drop off their children. As a consequence, the zone does not function as well as it should, with cars banked back on Armagh Street. Your assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated.

Active School Travel This year we have teamed up with the Brisbane City Council Active School Travel team to help reduce traffic congestion around our school. If you choose to drive to school, you can help avoid the sometimes congested drop off/pick up points and help maintain a 1.5m social distance by taking part in a park and stride. Park the car a 5-10 minute walk away from school and walk the rest of the way. Many of our families find this an enjoyable way to start and complete the day. The Active School Travel day at EJSS is Wednesday. This week we recommenced surveying our students to encourage our students to actively travel to school.

Student Success During the Learning@Home initiative, four Year 4 students accepted the challenge to form an Under 10 Boys Cross Country team that was promoted in the school newsletter earlier this term. Hudson Timms, Isaac Deakin, Doug Phillips and Sam Hawke competed in the Met. North Cross Country@Home 4 x 1.5km relay event last Thursday. Running shortly after a heavy downpour, the boys powered over waterlogged turf to record an average time of 6 minutes and 13 seconds for their 1500m runs. They now await the results to see how they placed. Well done boys!

From the Deputy Principals

Year 3 - Year 6 I recently discovered a new Podcast from the New York Times called Sugar Calling. In this series a variety of authors and poets are interviewed by Cheryl Strayed. In one episode of Sugar Calling an author chose to read the poem Pandemania. It was not their own work but it was a relevant example that illustrated the elaborate writing down of ideas and sharing these with others can help one make sense of the world through reading and maybe subsequent discussions. Anyone who belongs to a book club may

understand this concept particularly well. This poem was written in 2013 and it seems so real today. There are so many ways we can introduce children to poetry and the beauty of language and probably this is a genre we do not share often enough. This is something you may like to explore. Here is a poem to get you started. Now that the children have returned to school you may like to listen one particular episode titled “There’s a Quiet all over the World.” It is Billy Collins discussing “memorization” among other topics. He talks about “picture language” and the power of collective silence. Lots of food for thought for adults and parents making choices about young developing minds. It has been so lovely to see all our students back at school. There is such a buzz.

How was your day? Encouraging Opportunities to Talk After School Having a conversation with your child after a long day at school can be a difficult task, yet ever so valuable. Talking with your child about the school day shows you are interested in what is going on in their life. This interest boosts their mental health, happiness and wellbeing. It can also have a very positive effect on your child’s behaviour and achievement. It shows your child that you value school and education, which encourages them to value it too.

Talking together about school also helps you get to know more about what is expected of your child at school, how they learn and how they are challenged. It can help you understand when they are feeling less interested in school or having problems.

When you are in touch with your child’s feelings about school, you are more likely to see problems before they get too big. This way you can work on overcoming challenges together. Talking about school issues – like school projects or friendship problems – is also a great chance for you to express your family values about things like teamwork, respect for self and others, friendships, relationships, problem-solving and so on.

Some great conversation starters are:

Tell me something that made you laugh today.

How did you help somebody today?

How did somebody help you today?

Tell me one thing that you learned today.

Academic Reporting Semester One Term Two is always a busy term for teachers and students as they work together to ensure an accurate portfolio of work is collated across learning areas. A comprehensive portfolio ensures teachers are able to make evidence-based judgements of the learning and progress children have made across the semester. To provide teachers and students with the maximum time for teaching and learning following the period of Learning at Home, reporting processes will not be finalised until early in Term Three. Semester One report cards will be emailed home on Tuesday 21 July. Report cards will be emailed directly to parents. Please ensure you have updated your email address at the office and added [email protected] to your list of safe senders to ensure report card emails aren’t sent to your junk email.

From the Head of Teaching and Learning Mental strategies - Addition and subtraction Last week we looked at adding and subtracting using the JUMP strategy. Today we will look at the SPLIT and COMPENSATE strategies.

Adding and subtracting with the SPLIT strategy The split strategy requires the user to:

partition (break up) both numbers

add or subtract the place value parts

recombine the added parts to make the sum.

The split strategy relies heavily on students’ flexible place value understanding. It can be represented with materials and visual models, including base ten blocks and place value charts.

Students’ informal recording of the split strategy may resemble the following:

Typically, users of the split strategy will partition numbers and add or subtract mentally from the larger place (from the left). This is contrary to the formal written algorithm for addition and subtraction used widely in Queensland schools.

Adding and subtracting with the COMPENSATE strategy The compensate strategy requires the user to:

adjust one number (building up or building down)

add or subtract the parts

adjust the sum (or difference).

It is most common to adjust one number to a benchmark number, e.g. multiples of 10, 100 or 1000. However, as students become more fluent with the strategy, they might adjust to other compatible numbers, for example: 25, 75.

The compensate strategy can be represented with materials and visual models. In particular, hundred boards and empty number lines can be helpful in developing understanding. Students’ informal recording of the compensate strategy may resemble the following:

There was much excitement for our Year 6 students returning to school this week. In addition to reuniting with friends and teachers, they also received their new look 2020 seniors’ polos and jerseys, a special token of their final year at Eagle Junction. This year a team of Year Six parents worked with a new local supplier (Gorilla Sports), to update the previous designs and incorporate the school’s 125 year celebration logo onto the polo. The students love them and we think they look fabulous! A big thank you to the parents who volunteered their time and effort into making this happen for our school leaders. A special mention to Mr Nick Winwood and our sustainability captain, Ethan Forsdyke for making sure the plastic wrapping of 116 polos and 116 jerseys was kept out of landfill.
