February 2020 PRAYER INTENTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS Listen to the Migrants’ Cries: We pray that the cries of our migrant brothers and sisters, victims

of criminal trafficking, may be heard and considered.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE AND OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT 2020

The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Good Friday, while the other two meals on that day are to be light.

All the faithful are encouraged, when possible, to partici-pate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to under-take spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended.

All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl, which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese, as well as throughout our nation and our world.

The practice of tithing provides a regular reminder of your dependence on God. In good times, tithing helps you remember that God is the source of all blessings, and it allows you to demonstrate your gratitude for His care. In hard times, tithing motivates you to remember God’s faithfulness and enables you to demonstrate trust in God to provide for all of our needs.

When you tithe you enable those whom God has called to serve as pastors, ministry personnel, and parish leadership to faithfully build up the church ac-complishing the works of Christ in our parish!

Memorial Gifts of $1,000 or more in remembrance of a deceased friend or loved one are acknowledged on the Memorial/Commemoration board in the Narthex. Email the parish office [email protected] for assistance with Memorials and commemorations.

In full compliance with Vatican directives and Archdiocesan guidelines, low-gluten commun-ion hosts are offered at each Mass for those

who have special concerns regarding wheat and wheat products. Directions for receiving the low-gluten hosts will be given at the time of the Communion Rite.

FROM: Focus on the Family, Understanding the Five Languages of Love by Gary Chapman January 1, 2005 Some thoughts for World Marriage Day. There are five basic love languages – five ways to express love emotionally. Each person has a primary love language that we must learn to speak if we want that person to feel love.

Words of Affirmation If your spouse’s primary love language is words of affirmation, your spoken praise and apprecia-tion will fall like rain on parched soil. Before long, you will see new life sprouting in your marriage as your spouse responds to your words of love.

Acts of Service Do you remember the old saying, “Actions speak louder than words”? For some people, that is partic-ularly true of love. If acts of service is your spouse’s prima-ry love language, nothing will speak more deeply to him or her emotionally than simple acts of service.

“I’m sick of hearing ‘I love you’ Maxine said. If he loved me, he would do something to help me.” Maxine’s primary love language is acts of service (not words of affirmation), and even though her husband, David, loved her, he had never learned to express his love in a way that made her feel loved. However, after David and I talked and he read The Five Love Languages, he got the picture and started speaking Maxine’s love language. In less than a month, her love tank was beginning to fill up, and their marriage moved from winter to spring.

Receiving Gifts In every society throughout human history, gift giving has been perceived as an expression of love. Giving gifts is universal, because there is something inside the human psyche that says if you love someone, you will give to him or her.

What many people do not understand is that for some people, re-ceiving gifts is their primary love language. It’s the thing that makes them feel loved most deeply. If you’re married to someone whose primary love language is gift giving, you will make your spouse feel loved and treasured by giving gifts on birthdays, holidays, anniver-saries and “no occasion” days. Little things mean a lot to a person whose primary love language is receiving gifts.

Quality Time If your spouse’s love language is quality time, giving him or her your undivided attention is one of the best ways you can show your love. Some men pride them-selves on being able to watch television, read a magazine, and listen to their wives, all at the same time. That is an admirable trait, but it is not speaking the love language of quality time.

Instead, you must turn off the TV, lay the magazine down, look into your mate’s eyes, and listen and interact. To your spouse, 20 minutes of your undivided attention – listening and conversing – is like a 20-minute refill of his or her love tank.

Men, if you really want to impress your wife, the next time she walks into the room while you are watching a sporting event, put the television on mute and don’t take your eyes off her as long as she’s in the room. If she engages you in conversation, turn the TV off and give her your undivided attention. You will score a thousand points and her love tank will be overflowing.

Physical Touch We have long known the emotional power of physical touch. That’s why we pick up babies and touch them tenderly. Long before an infant understands the meaning of the word love, he or she feels loved by physi-cal touch. In marriage, the love language of physical touch includes everything from putting a hand on your mate’s shoulder as you walk by, touching his or her leg as you’re driving together, and holding hands while you’re walking to kissing, embracing, and sexual intercourse.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) meets on the first and third Mon-days of each month in the Bethany Rooms near the Parish Office. Join us February 17 at 7 p.m. We begin with prayer based on the Sunday readings

followed by teaching and discussion.

Our time is guided by Keith Kibler, Nancy Schneider, Deb Reif, Jan and Todd Smith, along with Fr. Fitzpat-rick. Our candidate and potential catechumens this year include folks from a wide range of ages and reli-gious backgrounds, and from no particular religious background. I invite your prayers for Justin, Nicole, Mark, and Lindsay.

“If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his life.”

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 8 & 9, 2020

First Reading Isaiah 58: 7 - 10

Thus says the LORD: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will an-swer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday. Responsorial: Psalm 112 (for 7 a.m. Mass only)

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2: 1 – 5

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Gospel Matthew 5: 13 - 16

Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

You are the salt of the earth

The Serenity/AA Group meets every Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Bethany Lounge. “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and

the wisdom to know the difference.”

The Cancer Support Group meets the sec-ond Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. in Meeting Rooms SS. Drexel & Neumann. We offer support to anyone diagnosed with

cancer, anyone who is presently undergoing treatment, has completed treatment, is a family member and/or caregiver. Our next meeting is March 14 at 11 a.m.

Caring for Friends! Cooks: Everyone is busy over the holidays so it seems to have affected the meal supply. Although it has not slipped to a critical situation, the supply has been a bit low for my comfort level. Hopefully it will im-

prove over the coming weeks. Visitors: It is wonderful that we had new visitor volunteers at the Stewardship Fair in November. Now when I get a call for help, there is some-one I can call. For more information, call Ellen at 610-384-7160 or email [email protected].

The next meeting for the Caregivers Support Group will be March 9, at 10 a.m. in the Bethany Lounge. The support group will now be known as “Nourish For Caregivers.” We recognize that virtually everyone of

us will care for a loved one at some point in our lives. Nourish provides caregivers a faith perspective, as well as, practical and emotional support, useful tools, and shared experiences. Please come and join us and be “Nourished.” for more information please call or email: Cathy Samoylo 484-433-9705, [email protected]; or Beth Trubachik 330-242-0206, [email protected].

Good Works: We are St. Peter Parish volun-teers who join many other local Christian church groups in performing home repairs. We reach out in love and friendship to transform

substandard houses into warmer, safer, and drier homes, and by doing so, turn despair into hope. The team welcomes new volunteers of all skill levels. For more information or to be a part of Good Works, contact Jim at 610-496-1393 or [email protected].

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Do you know someone who is suffering, struggling, facing overwhelming challenges, or major life changes? Consider gifting them with a prayer shawl or lap blanket to bring them comfort and let them know people are praying for them, no matter their age, faith, or problem. Our ministry members are knitters and crocheters of all skill levels and others who deliver our handiwork. All of us weave prayers into our handiwork and

pray for all our recipients who live nearby, around the country, and even overseas! If you’d like to join our ministry, our gather-ings are fun, inspirational, and optional. We meet every other Monday at noon as noted in the bulletin calendar. To find out more or select a piece for someone, contact Jan Smith at 610-269-1756 or [email protected]. PLEASE NOTE: We will be taking a break from Friday evening meetings during the winter months. Page 8 - 0146

Our church garden has been put to rest for the winter. We have pro-duced an abundance of produce for

delivery to area pantries. Gardening will begin again in the spring. If you are interested in volunteering please email Lawrence at [email protected].
