During this time, God asks us to prepare for Easter by acts of self-denial or by performing Acts of Charity. Jesus taught that we should care for one another; hence the opportunity presents itself during the season of Lent, to really focus on helping those around us, either at home, school or in the workplace. Tips for Making Lent More Meaningful 1. Slow Down. Set aside 10 minutes a day for silent prayer or meditation. It will revitalise your body and your spirit. 2. Read a good book. You could choose the life of a saint, an inspirational book or one of the pope’s new books. 3. Be Kind. Go out of your way to do something nice for someone else every day. 4. Volunteer at your parish. Whether it’s the parish fundraiser, cleaning the church or helping with the Children’s Liturgy, it will be a great chance to help others. 5. Pray. Especially for people you don’t particularly like and for people who don’t like you. 6. Tune Out. Turn off the television and spend quality time talking with family members or friends. 7. The statue of Joseph and Jesus in the school grounds stood for many years at the front of Saint Joseph’s Hostel in Wodehouse Street. The Hostel opened in 1958 for high school children from the Kimberley to attend Derby District High School later on primary school children from the stations lived at the hostel and most went to school at Holy Rosary. Newsletter 6th March, 2014Reflection- LentYesterday we celebrated Ash Wednesday which signified the beginning of Lent.

It will revitalise your body

and your spirit. 2. Read a good book. You could choose the life of a saint, an inspirational book or one of the pope’s

new books. 3. Be Kind. Go out of your way to do something nice for someone else every day. 4. Volunteer at your parish. Whether it’s the parish fundraiser, cleaning the church or helping with

the Children’s Liturgy, it will be a great chance to help others. 5. Pray. Especially for people you don’t particularly like and for people who don’t like you. 6. Tune Out. Turn off the television and spend quality time talking with family members or friends. 7. Clean Out Closets. Donate used items to the St Vincent de Paul Society.

St Joseph’s StatueRecently the school had a statue installed near the gate on Villiers Street. This statue used to be located outside the St. Joseph’s Hostel where many of our ex-students resided and is an important piece of Holy Rosary’s history.

Lay Missionaries managed the hostel, looked after the children in the boys and girls dormitories. Michael Booth (later Brother Michael Booth) loved gardening and had the grounds looking beautiful. Many people, Lay Missionaries, children and their visitors have happy memories of the hostel. The hostel closed in 1986. The statue reminds us of the importance of the hostel in the education of so many Holy Rosary students over the years. More importantly what went on at the hostel, the learning that was able to take place through the dedication and hard work of the staff as well as the teachers at Holy Rosary School. The statue of Saint Joseph with his hands on the shoulders of Jesus reminds that, we should always stay close to Jesus.  Mgr. Paul Boyers

We would like to thank Fr Paul, Liz Manera, Mark Norval, Chris Kloss, Robert Hadley, Derby Weld All (DWA) and Kimberley Freightlines for organising the statue’s restoration and installation.

Staff NewsI am pleased to announce that Reshai-Lee O’Meara, is commencing a twelve month traineeship at our school as an Aboriginal Teacher Assistant. I would like to welcome her to our community and wish her well.

Diamond Jubilee Date ChangeThe new dates for this year’s celebration are as follows:- August 22nd, 23rd & 24th

School Climate SurveyAll Catholic schools in WA will once again be asking a randomly selected group of parents, to complete an online SURVEY in order to gain valuable feedback regarding parent perceptions of various aspects of the culture of their school. This will occur after March 17th. Feedback from the survey will then be collated by an external company and returned to schools so they can identify areas of strength and areas for possible improvement. Survey participants and their responses remain completely anonymous. Staff and a randomly selected group of Year 6 and Year 7 students are also invited to participate in the survey so a balanced cross-section of opinion is gathered. If you are one of the randomly selected parents, please take the time to complete the survey.

Sacramental Program for 2014

In 2014 Holy Rosary School will be aligning the Sacramental Program with the Diocese of Broome. This means that the following sacraments will occur as follows:

Reconciliation is for Catholic Year 4 students. First Eucharist is for Catholic Year 5 students. Confirmation is for Catholic Year 6/7 students.

This means that there are no Reconciliation or First Eucharist programs being run this year at Holy Rosary School. Therefore, the Confirmation program is the only sacrament that will be running in 2014. A note will be sent home about Confirmation to all Year 6 and 7 Catholic students who have completed Reconciliation and First Eucharist with details about the program. If your child does not receive this letter and you would like them to complete this sacrament, please call the office to ask for a letter to be sent home.

Written NotificationAll absences must be explained with a written note. We appreciate parents/carers ringing up to notify us of an absence, but this must also be accompanied by a note, explaining the absence, when the child returns to school.
