Not&having&a&prom&was&just&an&alternativeCschool&fact&of&life&that&students&at&PhoenixRising&say&they&had&accepted&and&neverquestioned.
Maybe&thatJs&why&their¤t&excitementseems&electric&enough&to&power&thethousands&of&twinkle&lights&draped&down&theschoolJs&main&hall&and&around&thegymnasium,&where&Phoenix&RisingJs&firstprom&will&be&held&Thursday&evening.
Students&and&school&leaders&say&it&wouldhave&been&impossible&without&their&schoolJsnew&Mfairy&godmothers&and&godfathersM&&agroup&of&attorneys&and&staffers&fromGableGotwals&law&firm.
For&years,&the&team&of&volunteers&hadcoached&a&team&for&an&annual&mock&trialcompetition&for&area&high&schoolers&fromLakeside&Home,&the&Tulsa&County&JuvenileBureauJs&residential&treatment&facility.
When&the&home&was&shuttered&in&early&2013,GableGotwals&went&looking&for&some&new&atCrisk&youths&to&coach.

Phoenix&Rising&is&a&school&and&behavioraltreatment&day&program&for&adjudicatedyouths&run&through&a&partnership&betweenthe&Juvenile&Bureau&and&Tulsa&PublicSchools.
Students&there&admit&that&their&initialreception&to&getting&a&glimpse&into&life&on&theother&side&of&the&law&was&mostly&lukewarm.
MWhen&they&came&here&in&the&fall,&I&kind&ofthought&it&was&B.S.&Like,&itJs&dumb&for&us&toact&like&lawyers,M&said&Gloria&Washington,&ajunior.&MAs&the&competition&got&closer,&Istarted&getting&into&it.
MPretty&soon,&they&were&saying,&JWe&love&you&guys,&and&weJre&going&to&be&here.J&I&thought&itwas&just&talk,&but&actions&speak&louder&than&words.&They&go&out&of&their&way&to&help&us.M
Mary&Kevin&McNamara,&the&schoolJs&director,&said&the&oneConCone&coaching&the&law&firmbegan&with&the&mock&trial&team&quickly&led&to&a&deeper&concern&for&the&success&and&wellCbeing&of&her&students.
When&it&came&time&for&the&big&competition&students&had&worked&months&to&prepare&for,&theGableGotwals&team&made&sure&each&one&of&the&20&Phoenix&Rising&competitors&had&propercourtroom&attire.
MThey&came&with&armfuls&of&clothing&like&IJve&never&seen,M&McNamara&said.
At&a&celebratory&banquet&after&the&February&mock&trial&competition,&students&were&discussingthe&latest&buzz&from&school&&that&school&leaders&had&figured&out&a&way&to&throw&them&a&promeven&though&they&had&almost&no&money&in&the&budget&to&pay&for&it.
Attorney&Barbara&Moschovidis&said&she&overheard&one&student&joking&with&a&teacher&aboutwhether&he&would&be&their&promJs&disc&jockey.
MI&said,&JI&know&a&DJ!&Want&me&to&ask&if&they&will&DJ&at&your&prom?J&So&I&asked&my&friend,&andhe&was&all&in,M&Moschovidis&said.&MFrom&there,&it&was&just&reaching&out&to&different&people&weknow,&and&people&just&started&donating&things.M
Students&have&crafted&miles&of&paper&chains&as&decorations&and&glittered&posters&with&theirprom&theme,&MNew&York&Flashing&Lights.M&But&everything&else&&from&the&miles&of&twinklelights&and&balloons,&table&linens,&punch&bowls&and&sweet&treats&to&the&services&of&a&DJ&andphotographer&and&corsages&for&all&30&girls&&has&been&arranged&by&GableGotwals.
MA&prom&is&like&a&big&deal.&They&make&movies&about&prom,&so&we&just&wanted&to&make&itspecial,M&Moschovidis&said.
MThe&things&these&kids&have&to&deal&with,&including&a&lot&of&adult&problems,&is&overwhelming.ThatJs&part&of&the&reason&we&wanted&to&do&this.&They&deserve&to&have&a&really&genuine&highschool&experience.M
McNamara&said&she&has&been&blown&away&by&how&many&details&the&law&firm&volunteers&havetaken&care&of,&even&taking&girls&who&didnJt&have&access&to&prom&dresses&shopping&foreverything&they&will&need.
MI&have&never&been&around&a&group&of&adults&who&are&more&giving&&and&itJs&genuine,M&she&said.
As&of&Wednesday,&about&55&of&the&schoolJs&60&students&had&returned&permission&slips&toattend.
