Greetings HMTCA Family,

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of the 2013-2014 academic year. This year has

been action-packed – full of changes, accomplishments and events. This edition of the Phoenix News highlights many of our

students’ year end accomplishments and travels. I am so very proud of our kids.

Its official, they have broken ground on our new HMTCA High School Wing. The new wing will connect our main middle

school building with the Commons. Please be patient, as we will be faced with construction challenges over the next 18 months.

Unfortunately, we will not have access to the main courtyard until construction is completed in December of 2015. The good

news is that we will have a new parent drop off/cut out on Vernon Street, and it will be two lanes. Work on the parent drop

off/cut out is expected to be completed by the first day of school, Tuesday, August 26, 2014. I wish you all a restful and enjoyable summer and look forward to welcoming you back to HMTCA in late August.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR HMTCA TEACHER OF THE YEAR

CONGRATULATIONS to Sonia Tamburro, high school counselor, for being selected as HMTCA’s Teacher of

the Year! This was a well deserved honor. To quote those who nominated her,”Ms. Sonia Tamburro works hard

with the students, staff, and outside resources to ensure all of our high school students and rising high school

students are prepared for success in college. In addition, she counsels students daily, focusing on their

emotional and academic needs, as well as their social and life behaviors.”Ms. Tamburro has been at HMTCA

since 2004, when she started as a seventh grade Spanish teacher. She acquired her degree in counseling and

brought those talents back to HMTCA in 2011. Sonia has been an integral part of the development of our high

school.

Here are some of the highlights of Ms. Tamburro’s accomplishments:

Financial Aid Night Coordinator- An evening designed to help parents understand and navigate different

ways to pay for college.

Junior Planning Night Co-Coordinator- Junior parents learn about different post secondary opportunities.

Naviance- A unique tool that helps students, parents and teachers plan for post secondary success. It

has currently been used for things like career aptitude suggestions and SAT prep.

Career Fair Co-Coordinator- She brings professionals from various fields, into the school, so our

students can explore different career options.

PSAT Coordinator- Ms. Tamburro organized and implemented testing for our 10th and 11th graders.

Please join us in thanking Ms. Tamburro for her outstanding contributions to the HMTCA community and for her

tireless efforts toward the success of our students.

FIRST NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

INDUCTION

In its first ceremony of this kind at the school, 30 sophomores and juniors were inducted into the Hartford

Magnet Trinity College Academy Chapter of the National Honor Society on Wednesday June 4, 2014. Mrs.

Biggs opened the ceremony by thanking the selection committee for their hard work. Junior, Caylin Pollard

provided an a cappella rendition of the National Anthem, which was followed by words of advice from Trinity

President, Dr. James Jones.

NHS members Heather Sharp, Tracy Kane and Amanda Kennedy-Angel spoke on the four pillars of scholarship,

service, leadership and character, while the inductees publicly recognized someone who has had a strong

positive influence on their development. Freshman, Vivia Marshall, HMTCA Poetry Out Loud winner, paid tribute

to Maya Angelo with a moving recital of her poem, On the Pulse of Morning.

Mrs. Biggs and Mrs. Lalama bestowed NHS pins and certificates, and congratulated the inductees as they were

introduced by the current NHS members. Ms Sharp delivered the oath of membership to the inductees and the

evening ended with parents and staff congratulating the new NHS members over light refreshments.

LOOK HOW FAR THEY HAVE COME

The HMTCA Family Reunion was held on Wednesday, May 28th. We invite former students, now seniors in

high school, to come back for a reunion. Until we developed our own high school, all of our students dispersed

and went to schools all around the state. This event gives us a chance to see how they have grown and

succeeded in high school, and we get to learn about where the future will take them. Many students of the

Class of 2014 are going to college and a few will work, travel, or join the military. The students and staff had a

great time remembering the fun they had at HMTCA and enjoyed sharing in everyone’s successes since eighth

grade. It was great hearing the screams of joy from those kids who hadn’t seen each other or their HMMS

teachers in four years. One student came all the way from Oregon because she did not want to miss the

fun. The evening wrapped up with a tour of the middle school. Everyone had a great time.

CELEBRATE OUR DIFFERENCES

Each year, we take time to celebrate the incredible diversity of our community. Multicultural Night is a time for

people to share their culture through foods, music, artifacts and even traditional dress. This year our students

were asked to participate, by doing drawings of flags from different countries which were used as decorations.

To build excitement and anticipation, the school was treated to daily music from around the world. This year the

event was held before the middle school band concert, so people could enjoy a complete evening of

entertainment. A tradition at HMTCA, Multicultural Night never disappoints.

TAXI ANYONE?

Who would take a taxi if you could take a limousine? Several of our students were treated to a “limo lunch” to

celebrate their success in the Fall Fundraiser. Anyone who sold over $250 was treated to a stretch limousine

ride to have lunch at McDonalds! Rather than have the limo get stuck in a snow bank, we save the reward until

the spring. For most of the students, it is the first time they have ever been in a limousine, and half the fun is

watching people’s expressions as the limo pulls up and young children pile out. Needless to say, they

thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

HMTCA STUDENTS GO TO COLLEGE

Several weeks ago we did an article about our first group of students, who were actually taking

a college course on the Capital Community College campus. HMTCA and the students involved

were so excited to see our vision and goal become a reality. We thought it might be interesting

to get the students’ perspective on this thrilling first experience. The following three accounts ce

STILL MORE IMPORTANT HAPPENINGS

A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT

“Firsts” are always special and the first high school Junior Prom was no exception. Approximately fifty students

attended and from all reports, it was a magical evening for everyone. The theme was a masquerade ball, but

there was no hiding the fun and joy on the faces of our junior class. Thank you to the class officers who

worked so hard on the arrangements, the faculty for chaperoning, and the DJs for providing the fun. You can

see for yourself, from the pictures, it was beautiful in every sense.

HMTCA ON THE GO

EIGHTH GRADE HEADS FOR THE HILLS

Each year, as part of the celebration of completing middle school, eighth grade students go to

Holiday Hills, in Prospect. This is a day that kids look forward to from the time they are in sixth grade. Holiday

Hills provides a day chock full of food and activities that are pure fun. There is swimming, tennis,

rock climbing, kayaking, soccer, badminton water slides and even horse back riding. As for the food, who

wouldn’t love cotton candy, popsicles, ice cream and yes “real” food like hotdogs and hamburgers? There were

nothing but smiles, laughter and joy on this very special day.

HMTCA STILL GOING

“CAPE COD ROCKS”

This was the sentiment of our sixth graders, when they got back from Cape Cod Sea Camp in

Brewster, Massachusetts. This three day and two night excursion is often the first time that many of our students

are away from home. Although they may leave with some trepidation, the amazing activities soon replace their

fear with joy. The trip is both fun and educational.

The whale watch, often the favorite part of the trip, was particularly fruitful this year and the captain remarked that

he himself had not seen that many whales in a very long time. The boat left from Old Barnstable and went to

Stellwagen National Marine Sanctuary. Along the way, the crew offered our students an informative narrative

about what they are seeing. The bike ride to Skaket Beach along the Cape Cod Rail Trails was also a real crowd

pleaser. Although somewhat challenging, the kids absolutely loved it. Of course, were are activities like

basketball, soccer, frisbee, tetherball and GAGA Ball but sometimes it was simply the gorgeous beach and

exploration of the sand bars that captured the kids’ hearts. Whatever their favorite part was, they all come back

exhausted and full of happy, unforgettable memories.

Sports Update

THE STARS SHINE BRIGHT AT HMTCA

We have had an unbelievable spring season in HMTCA athletics, in both the middle school and the

high school. Our students have shown what true commitment, dedication and hard work can do.

The life lessons that sportsmanship teaches are invaluable, and our participants can walk tall and be proud

of all they achieved. Here are some of the highlights of the spring season.

High School Baseball won the CRAL League Championship defeating the Public Safety Academy 17-2.

High School Softball won the CRAL league Championship defeating the #1 seed MLC 14-7.

Middle School Boys Baseball finished the regular season with a 2-3 record.

Middle School Girls Softball finished the regular season with a 4-0 record.

Middle School Boys Volleyball upset Classical in the semi-finals but lost to #1 seed MELS in the finals.

Our track teams, on both the high school and middle school levels, were amazing. Our high school boys

finished fifth and the girls were runners up in their league championship meet. Both the boys and girls

middle school teams were runners up for the league championship. Even more exciting was that for the first

time, the middle school went to states!

The top winners for middle school in the state meet were Carlos Villarini who placed 12th in the 110m

hurdles, Matthew Crockett who took 11th in the 100m dash and Elijah Ortiz who won 12th in the long jump.

Congratulations to all of the athletes who qualified.

Hot off the press- Dario Gaci was just named MVP of the golf team!

AND THEN THERE WAS ALEX TOMCHO!!!!!

Alex Tomcho, an eleventh grader, took first place in the 100m dash

at the league championship, becoming the Class S Champion and

earning the honor of going to the states. He also placed third

in the 200m dash. On June 9th he placed third in the CT State Open,

qualifying him for the New England Regional Track Meet!

Way to go Alex.

This is the time of year when we recognize the outstanding achievements of our students in numerous areas

of our curriculum. So hold on and help us congratulate the hundreds of students being honored.

The Arts at HMTCA

STUDENT ART WORK AT MARK TWAIN HOUSE

Imagine a blistering hot day this summer with not a breeze in the air. Why not go to the

Mark Twain House, where eighteen of our students will have their work displayed? Mr. Davies’ high school

art classes (Drawing 2 and Painting 1) created original works of art, along with a five hundred word essay that

pertained to the museum’s exhibit, “At Your Service”. All of the artwork will remain on display for the

summer.

On June 1st, three students were honored with awards and new Kindle Fires!!!!!

THEATRE STUDENTS PREPARE FINAL PROJECTS

Ms. Kane’s theatre classes put the finishing touches on their final projects. The picture on the left is from the

eighth grade Advanced Theatre class. It features the trio of Zobia Shaikh, Sarai Hertz-Velazquez and

Lauren Cassot rehearsing a scene from, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was part of a showcase

presented on June 6th. The photo on the right is Cameron Lopez and Zachary Woodstock in a scene from

Edward Albee’sThe Zoo Story, directed by Nilmarie Rivera. This was part of their independent project on

Theatre of the Absurd in the Theatre II class.

TT AWARDS, AWARDS AND MORE AWARDS

MIDDLE SCHOOL AWARDS NIGHT

The Middle School celebrated awards night with a standing room only crowd on hand. It was an

incredible evening. In Mrs. Biggs own words, “Every day, our students and staff demonstrate a

sense of pride and passion for achievement in the qualities highlighted in our mission statement.

The accomplishments of our students and staff in the Core and Encore areas demonstrate that

HMTCA family members are truly the best, brightest, and most committed.”

There were over three hundred students recognized for academic achievements, and

excellence in other areas relating to our mission statement.

Besides the amazing number of students who, over the course of the year, maintained and

received awards for honors and high honors there were several very special awards that were

handed out.

The CAS Leadership Award is the CT Associations of Schools Scholar Leader Award, which is

given to 8th grade students, who are both academically gifted and a leader. This year it went to

Alexxus Hale and Kevin Lindstrom.

The Johannes Shattuck Memorial Award, given for excellence in science went to 8th grader

Nina Griffin.

The Sharilyn Miller Memorial Award is bestowed on an eighth grader who is exceptionally

helpful to the band. This year’s recipient was Chloe Campellone.

The Leslie Geetter Memorial Award celebrates the accomplishments of students who have

worked diligently to become bilingual, learning English as a second language. They have also

shown a strong desire to learn and have steadily improved. The two eighth grade recipients

were, Luis Zayas and Tamisha Vega.

The Maureen McElhone Award is given to a student who excels in visual arts. This year the

award was won by Tessa Komoroski.

The 8th Grade Encore Awards goes to two students who have been exemplary in their encore

classes across the board. Jazzmarie Torres and Giovanni Valentin Rey were this year’s

winners.

The Warriors Don’t Cry Award highlights a student who has struggled with obstacles or

disabilities but overcome them and not let it stand in the way of achieving an education. This

year’s well deserved award was given to 8th grader Jeffrey Gajda.

The HMTCA Honorable Actions Award is awarded to students who have consistently displayed

the spirit and intent behind this tenant of our school motto. Eighth graders Hannah Braverman

Emely Vazquez-Beltran and sixth graders Lizah Hoy-Houde and Keysha Perez.

Service Learning Awards are given to the student in each grade who has completed the most service learning

hours. The winners were Marrie Parede, Agnes Tessner Risser and

Damani Wahington.

The Principal’s Award celebrates the incredible achievement of maintaining a grade point average of 98 or

above. The recipients were eighth graders Sarah Swanson, Lauren Cassot,

Maizey Mabry Smith, Eliza Wizner and Madeline Pavlovich, seventh graders

Agnes Tessner Risser and Tess Robinson and sixth graders Gracie Iwerson and Eva Hart.

FORMER STUDENTS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS

2014 Jacob & Lewis Fox Scholars

Three former students from the HMMS class of 2010 were among the nine selected as Jacob & Lewis Fox

Scholars on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievement, outstanding character, demonstrated leadership

and spirit of reverence. Each student will receive over $10,000 to use towards their undergraduate studies, and

will be paired with a mentor to help guide them through their college experience. They were honored during a

reception at the Town & Country Club in Hartford.

Music Notes

AND THE BEAT GOES ON…

Watch out Wildwood! On Thursday, May 29th the middle school band and orchestra left for a competition in

Wildwood, New Jersey. The students had a fabulous time bowling, eating and having an amusement park all to

themselves for several hours! Oh, yes, they did take time out to compete and win first place for the concert

band, jazz band and orchestra. All three ensembles won the highest rating and even beat some high school

groups. Way to go music department!! Thanks to all the staff and parents who chaperoned, making this

important trip possible. The pictures tell the rest of the story.

HIGH NOTES FOR THE CHORUS

The HMTCA middle school chorus participated in the High Note Festival at Lake Compounce in Bristol on May

29th. They performed for experienced music educators, receiving a Superior rating- the highest awarded! The

chorus members were then treated to a fun afternoon in the amusement park. Mr. Jardim was extremely proud

of the chorus’s performance, as was the HMTCA family.

Summer News

SUMMERTIME READING FOR ALL LEVELS

The Nutmeg Book Award Nominees have finally been announced. These books will be incorporated into summer reading assignments. Now would be a great time for you to review the selections and begin to think about what you would like to read. As with past years, some of these books are available for purchase for $5 in the main office or you can go to your local town library. SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

As we do each summer, HMTCA wants to encourage our students to keep reading every single day. This

keeps your skills honed, your mind active, and your creative juices flowing. Reading packets have been

assigned, and are due upon students’ return to school in August. The packet with all of the instructions,

requirements and forms can be found on our website. Here is a sneak preview.

All students will be required to read one fiction book selected from the twenty Nutmeg Intermediate or Teen

Nominees. Books are available in your local libraries or, some may be purchased at the HMTCA main office for

$5.

The second requirement is to read/view a non-fiction piece. This can be an article, magazine, biography,

podcast, documentary, textbook, lab report, or essay. Written pieces must be completed for each text. The

specific instructions and forms are in the packets.

All students will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite Nutmeg Nominee next fall, when we return.

Every summer our incoming ninth and rising tenth grade students are participate in a mandatory ten day

course at Trinity College. The courses are geared toward improving skills and knowledge that will help

students succeed as they advance their academic careers.

Attendance for all ten days is MANDATORY.

For students entering ninth grade: Summer Writing (June 19 to July 2 or July 7th to July 18)

For students entering 10th grade: Summer Science (June 19 to July 2 or July 7th to July 18)
