CIRQUE DU SOLEIL TO PRESENT DRALION

SEVEN PERFORMANCES ONLY NOVEMBER 28 DECEMBER 2

AT US AIRWAYS CENTER Cirque du Soleil is pleased to announce that Dralion will be performing in Phoenix from November 28 December 2, 2012 at US Airways Center for seven performances only. Advance discounted tickets for Dralion are available now online exclusively to Cirque Club members through September 13, 2012. Cirque Club membership is free

Tickets for the general public will be available starting September 14 at www.cirquedusoleil.com/dralion or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Fusing the 3000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisci-plinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dral-ion (pronounced Dra-lee-on) draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The shows name is derived from its two emblematic creatures:

the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West. In Dralion, the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus embodied, each element is represent-ed by its own evocative colour: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved.

    Show Schedule (Nov 28 Dec 2, 2012): Wed, Nov 28 at 7:30 p.m. Thu, Nov 29 at 7:30 p.m. Fri, Nov 30 at 7:30 p.m. Sat, Dec 1 at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sun, Dec 2 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

In Revolution, producer J.J. Abrams epic drama coming to NBC Monday, Sept. 17, theres a worldwide blackout.

Unlike most, the lights dont go back on. Ever. However, there are deeply hidden and coveted vestiges of

electricity. The series questions what happens when not just the lights but anything that turns on switches off permanently, and we dont know why or how.

I feel like people need this show now, says Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), who stars as the shows villainous Capt. Tom Neville. People feel like we are in danger of the end of the world, and doom and gloom. And the show is about the end of an old way of thinking and a new dawn blooming. We are on the precipice of realizing that humanity is all we have. I see it in my children. I see it in our spiritual essence. We are forgetting what we know.

We losing our connection to electricity is just an analogy of us losing our connection to each other as well, Esposito continues. The deeper reconnection is to have to rely on each other.

Expect to hear people talk about Revolution in terms of a post-apocalyptic or a dystopian society, but no one knows if this blackout was the result of an apocalypse. Life as everyone knows it has changed so dramatically that cities no longer exist.

A few people such as Ben, a mild-mannered guy with a wife and two kids, expected the cataclysmic event that launched the series. He quickly downloads valuable information onto a flash drive camouflaged as a pendant.

Captain Neville and his henchmen come to seize Ben 15 years after the power ceased. The arrest goes wrong, Ben dies, and Neville winds up nabbing Bens son, Danny (Graham Rogers). This all happens very early on, so it is not a spoiler.

Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos, Being Human) is determined to rescue her brother, Danny. She seeks their long-lost uncle Miles (Billy Burke), who is tending bar in Chicago. Incidentally, there isnt wheeled transportation or toilet paper in this world, but there is booze.

Ultimately, the world is divided into two generations: those who knew what it was like to click on a device and be entertained and in touch with the world, and those to whom Wrigley Field was always an overgrown ruin.

So while people are struggling to hold onto shreds of the old society and struggling to get the lights back on and figure out the solutions to the mystery, theres Charlies generation, who see this almost as a pastoral, simple place that they grew up (in), co-executive producer Jon Favreau (Iron Man), who directed the pilot, says in a press conference.

    Blackout sparks Revolution

ARTS! Punkplay Presented by Stray Cat Theatre at Tempe Performing Arts Center Thursday 7:00pm Friday and Saturday 8:00pm Sunday 2:00pm

Its 1985. Reagans in office. Greed rules Wall Street. Coke decides its a good idea to release New Coke. In a suburban bedroom, Mickey, a thirteen-year-old suburban misfit, is befriended by an angry runaway named Duck. Both are about ready to explode out of their adolescence when they discoverpunk rock. Its righteous fury becomes a foundation for the boys to reinvent themselves and create a self-defining belief system that revolutionizes their universe. But as reality threatens to crash in on them, their fabricated world of amped-up music and shocking band names becomes just as oppressive as the society theyre desperate to reject. punkplay is a wild, comical mix-tape tribute to the excesses and energy of adolescence.

Little Shop of Horrors Presented by TheaterWorks at TheaterWorks Friday and Saturday 6:00pm Sunday 1:30pm A down and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving. Soon Audrey II grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite.

ShowUp for Le$$ Monty Pythons Spamalot Comes to Phoenix Presented by Phoenix Theatre at Phoenix Theatre ShowUp for Le$$ Price: $46.00 Regular Price: $76.00 Tickets available for various dates in September and October

Phoenix Theatre kicks off its 92nd season with one of the funniest shows on Earth, Monty Pythons Spamalot. Winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical, Spamalot, written by Monty Python alum Eric Idle, lovingly rips off the film classic

Monty Python and The Holy Grail to tell the tale of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their epic quest. However, diverting a bit from the real story, this hilarious musical that pokes fun at Broadway musicals features such oddities as a line of beautiful dancing girls, flatulent Frenchmen, cows and killer rabbits. Phoenix Theatres own associate artistic director, Robert Kolby Harper, performs the role of Robin, while Phoenix favorite Toby Yatso tackles Lancelot. To find this and additional special offers on concert, museum and theatre tickets, visit www.ShowUp.com and click on the ShowUp for Le$$ tile on the right-hand side of the page. Reviewers RoundtableThe following quotes were pulled from AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazines film columnists full reviews in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of each of this weekends new releases.

ArbitrageRichard Gere plays a New York hedge-fund magnate who is about to unload his troubled empire just as an unexpected bloody error forces him to juggle family, business and crime, igniting the suspicions of a police detective (Tim Roth). (R 100 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director Nicholas Jarecki delivers the perfect blend of mystery, intrigue, and financial insight in this taunt thriller. Richard Gere excels as the central focus of a person straddling a multitude of fences while excellent performances by the supporting cast add an extreme sense of believability for a story that holds one on the edge to the very last revealing sequence. Grade: A-

Joseph: Arbitrage is a good film that could have been great had it used its financial aspects as a background stressor as opposed to its primary

plot. Parts of writer/director Nicholas Jareckis new thriller may go over the heads of most viewers especially those who were left completely stumped by last years Margin Call. Fortunately, the filmmaker mirrors his more complicated issues with down-to-earth ones, creating a compelling piece of entertainment for not only day traders but the rest of us, as well. Grade: C

Finding Nemo 3D*Albert Brooks voices a timid clownfish who sets out on a journey to bring home his son who has been captured in the Great Barrier Reef and taken to Sydney. (G 100 minutes)

Resident Evil: Retribution*Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, who awakens in the heart of Umbrellas most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak. (R 95 minutes)

SamsaraTransporting viewers to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites and natural wonders, while encouraging their own inner interpretations about the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives inspired by images and music. (PG-13 99 minutes)

Joseph: Samsara is two movies in one. Unfortunately, only one of them belongs on a big screen instead of on the walls of a museum. The new dialogue-free documentary from Ron Fricke, who served as both its director and photographer, is breathtakingly beautiful but the first and final 30 minutes of the film feature more art than entertainment. However, the middle of the movie during which Fricke finds magnificent meaning in mundane, modern-day things delivers some of the most spectacular cinematic sensations of the year. Grade: C

Soundbite SpotlightThe following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazines film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

    Writer/Director Nicholas Jarecki (Arbitrage)By Joseph J. Airdo

I began writing Arbitrage in 2009. It was a time of the 1.0 of financial disasters. We are getting up to 2.0 now but that was kind of the beginning. Everything had been great and then, all of a sudden, everything was turned upside-down. So I started reading all of this financial journalism and it captivated my interest because I am a New Yorker and I grew up around the financial industry. My parents were both commodities

traders and brokers so it was a world that I really knew a lot about.

I started thinking about this hedge fund manager and getting deeper into his story. Instead of just saying what happens if a guy like this metaphorically gets blood on his hands, I thought that it would be more thrilling and exciting if I looked at it literally and carried it over into the realm of a real blood crime. How far will this man go to not die in jail? Because that is what is going to happen to him if he is unable to solve his problems.

The situations in the film are naturally stressful. You have a man who has made mistakes, is a few hundred million dollars in debt and is about to be discovered when something even worse happens a death for which he is responsible. This is a movie about a slippery slope. With each deception, he becomes further and further compromised and puts those he loves in more and more danger. The question we wanted to ask was, Will you give up the power that you love in order to hang on to your last shred of humanity? Nicholas Jarecki

Actress/Co-writer Lauren Miller (For a Good Time, Call...)

    By Joseph J. Airdo

In For a Good Time, Call... which opened last weekend, Lauren Miller plays a young woman who, after reluctantly moving in with an enemy from her past (Ari Graynor), discovers that her new roommate is working as a phone-sex operator and decides to sign on as her business partner. Miller also co-wrote the comedys screenplay.

All my life, I have been the kind of person who loves to hear the word no because that will then motivate me to say, I am going to do this anyway. But I do not think that I fully realized that words power until now. It really did fuel me. Finding the confidence within myself to do something like this was huge for me. And I am still finding it every day. I realized that I am much stronger than I ever thought I was.

The phone-sex stuff that is in the movie is funny. It is not realistic. We just had fun. It was about making each other laugh and being true to the world that we were creating not necessarily the titillating real life world of phone-sex. The things that

were uncomfortable were, honestly, the scenes in which Aris character had real feelings and real emotions. But she has got this range to her that is just so huge and so beautiful. We wrote the screenplay with her in mind.

We shot the movie in 16 days so time was tight and we used all of the golden moments that we had. [Seth Rogen] begged us to be in the movie. He auditioned like 10 times. We did not want to cast him because, after all, who would want him in their movie? So, he finally said, I will sleep with you if you let me in your movie. No, really, he was awesome about it. We were brushing our teeth one night and I said, Hey, you are funny. Will you be in the movie? And he agreed. Lauren Miller

guided meditation on the themes of birth, death, and rebirth. Mark and I go back about 35 years. I worked on a film called Koyaanisqatsi, Mark and I met after that and we wanted to take this concept of interconnection on a global level so we went out and made Baraka (1992)which is about humanitys relationship to the eternal. Continuing that themeis Samsara and as you say, its quite a commitment of 5 years, you really give up a lot, being out on the road for 3 years of filming in 25 countries. Its a big commitment to bringing back that perfect imagery for the film.

Reactions at screenings has been very favorable, people are amazed at whats going on around them that they havent really seen, and they get a sense from watching the film that life is really very fragile and that comes across through the sand mandala being created and then being destroy at the end of the film, and thats the overall central theme

of theimpermanence and people come away sensing that they have many choices to make, and theres many paths to follow for rebirth and humans to transform themselves Ron Fricke

I knew with your production background your curiosity of the physicality of filming Samsara would be upper most! We both worked as writers and editors on the film, and collaborated throughout the total process. Its a major undertaking to move all of the 70mm equipment and crew through the 25 countries so there were lots of the various job slots where we and the crew wore double and triple hats.

Rons really shooting the film, hes behind the lenses making those key decisions about what imagery, what lens, whether its a dolly shot, or a portrait shot, doing all the research on the locations before we went out and shot them, and ultimately the editing process.

It took about a year in post-production, and, we edited the film in silence without any music and brought the music in later. We added it in sequence and structured the film by mood, and moving the sequences around based on the structural foundation of the sand mandala sequence. The sand mandala is the bookends of the film and used it as a metaphor to show people how fragile we are and how things change Mark Magidson

Bonus FeaturesThe following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazines film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD or video-on-demand.

Actor Matt Bush (High School)By Joseph J. Airdo

In High School,Matt Bush plays a high school valedictorian who gets baked with the local stoner (Sean Marquette) finds himself the subject of a drug test, which causes him to concoct an ambitious plan to get his entire graduating class to face the same fate and fail. Adrien Brody also stars.

[Adrien Brody] was having fun playing this psychopath and I certainly was having fun watching

him. There was this one scene where my character is hiding in the hallway and Adriens character is talking to Seans character. They kept making each other laugh over and over again. We could not get through the scene. We kept breaking because it was so funny. That was my favorite moment of filming. Matt Bush

Actress Shari Rigby (October Baby)By Joseph J. Airdo

In October Baby, Rachel Hendrix plays a college freshman who sets out on a road trip with her misfit friends to discover herself after learning that she is an abortion survivor. In an instance where art imitates life, Shari Rigby plays her reluctant birth mother. (The movies novelization is also now available.)

The more and more I read and the deeper and deeper I went into it, I realized that this adventure of a young girl finding out that she is an abortion survivor really paralleled my life 20 years ago. It was just so overwhelming. As actors, we get scripts and go through a preparation process for roles so that we can be great storytellers. But then if, all

Daylight (1996): Stallones brawn is on full display as he plays a disgraced emergency rescue worker trying to save those trapped by a New York commuter tunnel explosion.

Nighthawks (1981): Stallone is well-cast as a member of an elite New York police team tracking a terrorist (Rutger Hauer).

Screenwriters Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Piranha 3DD)By Joseph J. Airdo

In Piranha 3DD, which was written by Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, a prehistoric school of blood-

thirsty piranhas makes its way into a newly opened water park. Dunstan and Melton are also responsible for four of the seven films in the Saw franchise.

We had done a production polish on Alexandre Ajas Piranha 3D so we were well-versed in where it was going. So when Bob Weinstein asked, What do you guys think? we responded, They will go downstream, where there happens to be a water park and not just any water park but the sleaziest water park around that happens to have these weird cross promotions, like celebrity lifeguards. Patrick Melton

What shaped Piranha 3DD was Feast, a horror-humor hybrid with a modest budget that bonded [director] John Gulager, Patrick and I and was our testing ground. It was so much fun to pour the experiences that were important during our childhood into a movie. Likewise, Piranha 3DD is that bumper sticker that allows commentary on the genre as it goes along dismantling and destroying everybodys earnest lifestyle. Marcus Dunstan

Actor Brian Presley (Touchback)By Joseph J. Airdo

In Touchback,Brian Presley plays a high school football player who, on the game winning play of the biggest game of his life, injures his knee and destroys his dreams of a college and professional career. Fifteen years later, he receives the opportunity of a lifetime the chance to go back and change history.

Its a Wonderful Life is one of my favorite films and there are a lot of themes that this movie shared with that one. I have gotten a chance to hit the mountain peaks but then I have also been in the valleys. This movie reminds you that what is really important in life are your relationships. It definitely set the tone for the types of films that I want to make as an actor/producer. It was a wonderful experience and I will always keep this character with me. Brian Presley

I may or may not have ADD, but I definitely do have a short attention span. Since I began my journey of drinking and learning about wine, when I find something I like, I like to repeat the experience over and over again, repeatedly and incessantly, without end. This is okay, because by the time I have worn it out; my attention has already moved onto something else anyhow, asmy palate evolves.

My favorite wine of the moment received 91 points from Wine Spectator and was listed on their 2011 Top 100, coming in at #54, the 2009 Catena Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. The label proudly proclaims winemaker Nicolas Catena 2009 Decanter Man of the Year Decanter Wine Magazine, London, UK. However, the vines were selected by his daughter, Laura Catena. Laura, in addition to being the winemaker, happens to be a doctor and shes kind hot, too. She selected Malbec grapes from four different high-altitudefamily owned vineyards ranging from 2850-4856ft. elevation and the blend incorporates signature qualities from each vineyard.

In doing my research I found the following tasting notes from writer and sommelier, Nadine Nettemann (whos also kind of hot), completely irresistible. Ive found that if you read these tasting notes just prior to tasting the wine, it tastes even better.

Taking a sip of a Catena Malbec 2009 is like a

purple waterfall of silk flowing from a snow-covered mountain range filled with ripe black plums, abundant black cherries, juicy blackberries and lush raspberries. The stream flows alongside a field of wildflowers dotted with lavender and sparse fig trees before pouring past chocolate covered banks. Nadine Nettemann.*

Oh, yeahits that good! Especially when you have just prepared a flat iron steak rubbed with chili powder and fresh ground Himalayan pink salt, grilledto a perfect medium rare, given a chance to rest and then sliced thin, and covered with a fresh made chimichurri sauce (cilantro, shallot, garlic, cumin, sea salt, crushed red pepper, red wine vinegar and extra virgin olive oil).Chimichurri is a classic Argentine sauce and Malbec is a classic Argentine wine.

mProfessional Wine TastersBy Marlene P. Baumann

Wine fans often won-der about professional wine tastersthe wine journalists, raters and scorers, and wine buyers in the trade. How can

person write about or rate so many wines from just one or two tastings? And when does palate fatigue set in?

I rely on the notion that certain skills separate the pros from the fans in almost anything in life. It takes a great deal of talent, practice, concentration and innate giftedness to become a leading professional. In the case of wine tasting, strong sensory abilities are vital and you must be able to translate them into words.

Professional wine tasting is regarded as one of the most difficult aspects of the wine trade. Sometimes the tastings are double blind-- the tasters know nothing about the wines the bottles are covered completely. More commonly, the tasters have an aware-ness of the wines they are about to taste.

There are three basic actions the taster does: Look (for color, clarity, viscosity), Smell (for aromas), and Taste (for flavor and texture). Professional wine tasters spit to not do so would be improper. The correct glassware is used, with some tasters even bringing their own tasting glasses. And the wines are tasted without food, not even crackers or water, which might unfairly change the tasters perception of the wine.

Tastings happen in a variety of ways. There are vineyard trips, where professionals visit multiple vineyards in one day and taste all the wines on offer. By weeks end, they may have covered more than 100 wines. Private wine trade fairs are another arena for the professionals, with thousands of wines from a country or region. The tasters, each with his/her own game plan hit the booths all day. Ive been to these several times and they are really fun, albeit exhausting. Other tasting events are very restricted and controlled: they occur at the same time of day, the wines are uncorked at exactly the same time, and they carefully check that the wine tempera-tures are the same.

As for palate fatigue, my own view is even the professionals have a daily limit before they risk burning out. Thats part of being a professional knowing when its time to call it a day! Next week, we will talk about your own wine tasting technique.

    Get Smart: A Condensed Wine

Aroma GuideWant to be slightly savvier at your next wine tasting? Take a look over the following basic wine aromatics and attempt to commit the characteristics to memory.

Fruit is an omnipresent characteristic in wine, since grapes are, well, fruit. But there are surprising aromas that make it into wine bouquets. Take for instance:

o Banana, melon and apricot. To experience this yourself try a Malvasia Bianca from Arizona, like Vino de la Familia Blanca from Page Springs Cellars.

o Fig, prune and raisin. These aromas come from grapes that are grown in hot climates. Its likely

that many of the grapes used in such a wine have literally turned into raisins.

Herbaceous green aromas are unpleasant to some and are sometimes considered flaws, though many green scents can be pleasant.

o Green pepper is a classic flaw, in that it indicates the vines were not pruned back enough and the grapes did not mature fully or properly.

    o Tobacco and straw are

two dried green aromas that are quite pleasant in the right wine. Grab a bottle of Bordeaux and just think wet straw while sampling.

Here are some of the more out-there descriptions used by aficionados.

o Medicinalthink Band-Aids. Some cask-aged whiskies smell of nothing else, andwhile an acquired tastecan be highly intriguing.

o Bacon. Try looking for this in Syrah, Petit Sirah and Zinfandels that have been aged in newer oak. Something about the fruitiness and toastiness combine to create Applewood-smoked bacon notes!

o Horsey-ness: one of my all-time favorites! Think barnyard. This character comes from yeast known in the wine world as brett, which is a shortened version of brettanomyces. Once you first recognize it, youll start smelling it everywhere!

The list goes on. Check out some WineLibraryTV.com videos for some more incredible notes by the always entertaining host, Gary Vaynerchuck. Cheers! By Nathan Brugnone www.UptheCreekAZ.com www.JavelinaLeapWinery.com

JOKES Chicken Little Recently a first grade teacher in a small Arizona ranching community was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part where Chicken Little warns the farmer. And Chicken Little went up to the farmer and yelled THE SKY IS FALLING-THE SKY IS FALLING! she repliedThe teacher put the book down and asked the class, Sowhat do you think that farmer said after hearing that warning? There was a pause, then finally little 6 year old Victoria raised her hand and replied, I think the farmer said: HOLY CRAP..A TALKING CHICKEN! It took that teacher 10 minutes to restore order in her class.

The Living Will Willy was sitting in the living room in his underwear as usual watching a talk show about horrible medical conditions when his wife walked in from her job at the truck stop diner. He looked up and repliedCharlene.Just so you know, I dont never want

to live in a vegetative state, dependent on a damn machine and fluids from a bottle. Honey babe, If that ever happens to me - you just pull that damn plug. Charlene never hesitated a moment - she walked over, unplugged the TV, then threw the bottle of Jim Beam that Willy was sipping on out the window! The Big Fight Marv was on his way with his new lovely young wife to one of the big boxing events of the year that he had paid top dollar for ring side seats. He had tried to get her ready early, but she wanted to look really sexy for this big night out. Finally they arrived, dashed thru the parking lot and into the arena just as the opening bell rang. As they reached their seats and sat down, the champ hit the canvas with a thud and was counted out! As the crowd began to file out, Marv turned to his new bride and said in a condescending tone You know, I was really looking forward to this evening, and look - its over in less than 3 minutes!

His young bride, who had not spoken

a word since they arrived, stood up, straightened her dress, looked down at her new older hubby and snapped So youre complaining that it was over in less than 3 minutes?...Well, Guess what - Now you know how I feel

A Lesson In Sex And Good Grammar

On his 69th birthday, Charlie got a gift certificate from his wife.

The certificate paid for a visit to a medicine man with a traveling show in town for the weekend. Charlies wife had been told this ancient potion maker was rumored to have a wonderful cure for erectile dysfunction.

So Charlie drove to the outskirts of town, knocked on the door of the trailer, handed his certificate to the medicine man and wondered what he was in for.

The old man handed him a potion in a small vial and with a grip on Charlies shoulder - warned him, This is a powerful potion, during the next full moon, which is tomorrow night, take only one drop on your tongue and then say in a loud voice 1-2-3. When you do, you will become more of a man than

you have ever been and youll be able to perform as long as you want.

Charlie was excited, but as he left, he turned and asked, Wait, what if Ive had enough - how do I stop the medicine from working?

To get it to stop working - your partner must say 1-2-3-4 he responded, but when she does, the medicine will not work again until the next full moon.

Charlie was very eager to see if it worked, so the next evening he showered and invited his wife to join him in the bedroom. When she came in he put a drop of the potion on his tongue, dropped his robe and yelled, 1-2-3! Immediately, he was the manliest of men.

His wife was excited and began ripping off her clothes then she smiled and said Charlie this is unbelievable but why were you yelling the numbers 1-2-3 for?

And that, boys and girls, is why we should never end our sentences with a preposition, because we could end up with a dangling participle.

We all know really smart guys who dont care much about what they wear, and few of them look as good as Mozzie (Willie Garson) on the USA Network series White Collar.

I like the idea of our show, says costume designer Karen Malecki. Its really clean and upscale and fashiony. Its a lot of fun to dress the characters in that regard. Its not very realistic; everybody looks perfect all the time, and we have a really good time with that.

The only challenge is getting great clothes for a decent price and staying within the budget something most of us can relate to.

I find great things for Mozzie at Barneys and the Gap; it really runs the gamut for him, Malecki says. Whatever I think is good for his character.

Travel GuidePhiladelphia the birthplace of the United States, the Cradle of Liberty, the home of incredible beer. Didnt know about that last one, did you? While Phoenix has been growing in size and challenging Philly for the title of 5th Largest City in the United States, Philadelphia has been growing a beer culture that rivals some of the best in the country.

Lets deal with the history part first. Bostonians may disagree with the Cradle of Liberty moniker but in reality the major claim they have made is James Otis passionate anti-British speech in 1761. Certainly some key Revolutionary War moments happened in and around

Boston, but Philadelphia is the place where Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention did their work. The city where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were drafted debated and signed. While Boston certainly can claim a large bit of outstanding history, Philly is the city where things happened.

Boston also has a great beer culture, but we are here to look at Philly. This city was founded in 1682 and its beer culture dates back even earlier. When William Penn arrived in Pennsylvania there were already taverns serving a variety of beer. In fact Penns boat anchored next to a transplanted Irish Pub called The Blue Anchor. the time was virtually undrinkable, beer was the logical choice for hydration. By the time of the War for Independence it is said that Philadelphia had a tavern for every 25 men and along with Boston, more taverns than anywhere in the English speaking world. Old City Tavern which was originally built in 1773 sits in Independence National Park and is filled with history. It was the unofficial meeting place for the First Continental Congress in 1774, a place of celebration for delegates to Congress on the first anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and hosted a dinner in honor of General Washington at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in September of 1787.

None of that has anything to do with drinking beer in Philadelphia todayexcept that City Tavern still stands and it serves four unique beers patterned after the beers of the Revolution. In fact, their four beers, made by Yards Brewing are called Ales of the Revolution. They include Poor Richards Tavern Spruce, based on Ben Franklins original recipe, Jeffersons Tavern Ale which features wheat, honey and rye (the original used ingredients from Monticello, his Virginia estate), General Washingtons Tavern Porter, inspired by Washingtons recipe, but reflective of Philadelphia-style

porters in general; and finally, Hamiltons Federalist Ale, a nice pale ale which is produced exclusively for City Tavern. A nice sized sampler of all four will set you back on $12.

Staying in the historical area, another mandatory stop is Eulogy Belgian Tavern. Just three blocks from Independence Hall near Penns Landing, Eulogy boasts 300 bottles and 21 draught beers. The menu focus is on Belgian and casual American food with amazing mussels. Eulogy has been ranked as the fifth best beer restaurant in the country by RateBeer.com. Make sure you try the Eulogy Busty Blonde, a nice beer brewed exclusively for Eulogy by La Binchoise. If German beers are your thing go toe Bierstube Tsingtau, just a few blocks from Eulogy. Undeniably the largest selection of German beers in Philly, they also cater to the craft crowd. Plenty of authentic Bavarian food is available along with a few American favorites. Another great stop in the historic area is Khyber Pass Pub. Once it was the citys classic rock and roll bar, and now it is an incredible craft beer bar with a New Orleans flair. Gumbo, oysters, boudin balls and an assortment of other foods from the Crescent City are on the menu and no matter what, try the roast beef with debris gravy. As for beer, expect to see

There are plenty more places in this area including Triumph Brewing and Standard Pub, but we can only drink so much in one day. So lets relocate to Center City and see what we can find there, shall we?

This is where the granddaddy of Philly beer bars residesMonks Caf, which describes itself as The soul of Belgium in the Heart of Philadelphia. And it is. Tom Peters, who managed the legendary Copa II just a few blocks away,

opened the bar over 15 years ago and it rapidly became the center of the Philadelphia beer universe. Holder of countless awards and recognitions, including a spot in All About Beer Magazines 10 Places You Must Have a Beer Before You die list, Monks capture Belgium, craft beer and Philadelphia in one place. They are also one of the first American beer bars to have a Belgian brewer create a beer just for them. Van Steenberge produces Monks Caf Flemish Ale and it is one of the finest examples of this style available in the U.S. Outstanding food and a knowledgeable staff compliment the outstanding beer list. NAPRIQUAT PALE, Heres To Brewing! by King James Swann

Hello again friends, today Id like to tell you about a brew very dear to my heart. Apriquat Pale Ale from Sierra Nevada Brewing in Chico, California. Why is this brew so important you ask? Well, its a damn fine brew if I do say so myself, but more importantly because I helped formulate the recipe and brew it!

The experience was called Beer Camp. A select group of individuals are brought together to brew on Sierra Nevadas smaller pilot brew house for the sake of research and development. The beers are released in very small quantity in the states where the Beer Camp members are from to test for popularity. I was fortunate enough to brew with Jim Lolli from the Hungry Monk and the owners of Hamiltons Tavern, Churchills Pub &Slaters 50/50 all in San Diego.

Now back to the beer! Apriquat is a very session-able west coast pale ale with just a hint of apricots and kumquats added to the mix for a crisp, clean and refreshing yet unexpected experience. Brewed with a large modicum of Citra hops its got a semi spicy citrus appeal perfect for hot weather drinking. Coming in at just over 5% ABV, its a beer made for all day or night consumption. It pairs quite nicely with hot and spicy wings or a Ruben stuffed with warm pastrami.

I must admit that I am IN LOVE with this brew but not just because I helped brew it, instead because its yet another example of how great session beers can be. Following in the footsteps of Firestone WalkerPale 31 and Stone Pale Ale, these are beers with big flavour that arent built like Sherman Tanks. These are beers made simply for the pure enjoyment of drinking beer.

    Until Next Week, Cheers!

you can get any beer at either bar) and a better feel for a traditional Belgian neighborhood bar. Dont ask to see the vintage list unless you have just raised your credit limit, because some of these beers will have you ordering first and figuring out how to pay for it later.

Center City has a lot more than Monks to offer. Remember the aforementioned Copa II? It is now called Jose Pistolas and it embodies the Philadelphia beer scene. If you want a Yuengling Lager, you can get it herealong with PBR and Miller Lite, but dont let that scare you craft drinkers away. At any given time you will find specialties from Great Lakes, Lancaster Brewing, Allagash and others available. An incredible bottle list is also available. Perch Pub hasnt been open too long, but they have figured out how to do craft beer. A recent visit found beers on tap from 21st Amendment, Brooklyn, Lavery, Stoudts and Hill Farmstead.

Downtown is also home to one of Philadelphias favorite breweries, Nodding Head. When you walk up the stairs to this second floor brewpub, you are greeted with a display of well over 100 bobble head dolls, with more behind the bar. The seven barrel brewery is right there, and the jukebox is a classic. Everything is set for a perfect

morning, afternoon and/or evening. Start out with the samplerand that may be where you end, since it includes seven ounce pours of all seven beers on tap. If that scares you, the Berliner Weisse (woodruff syrup available upon request) and Rascal are both outstanding; and if the IPA is on tap, go for it. Open most days from 11:00 AM to 2:00 AM, this is the place to go no matter when you want a beer.

No trip to Philly would be complete without indulging in the five basic food groups. In Philadelphia that includes cheese steaks, soft pretzels, Taylor pork roll, water ice and scrapple. Cheese steaks will be good anywhere. Dont feel like you have to get them with Cheese Whiz, Provolone or American is perfectly acceptable, and fried onions are optional. Cheese steaks are considered a rite of passage in Philly. Every politician has to be photographed eating one and they are critiqued. Rumor has it that John Kerry lost t
