All students are expected to dress out for P.E. Students who do not have their uniform will be issued a loaner uniform to be used for that day only. Three (3) points will be deducted from the daily points each time a student borrows loaners.

Once a week, each class will participate in a conditioning activity to promote cardiovascular fitness. The activity will vary from week to week, but all activities will increase cardiovascular fitness and therefore, work the heart muscle. The student earns points for the activity, by doing the activity well, and by striving to improve from week to week. If a student does not do aerobic activity well, then these weekly activities will help to increase his/her level of fitness. Improving cardiovascular fitness levels is the first step towards promoting a healthy life style, and reducing heart disease.

Just as in any other class, ability is part of your fitness grade. If you do not run well, then your fitness grade will reflect this. However, unlike some other classes, we do give some credit for personal improvement. If your mile run time, for example, is very slow, you will earn “ 0” points for ability. If you improve on your previous mile time, you will earn “ 5” points for improvement. Though, this is still 50% (F) for that run, it is not affect your overall grade as much. A student can earn 50% on every fitness activity an still earn a solid “ B” in the class. Also, remember that anyone who runs between 8:00 and 9:00 minutes will receive all ten points for the run. We also offer students the opportunity to earn extra credit to help bring up low fitness grades. Any student who is dissatisfied with a fitness run that he/she has completed may come in and run a 10 minute run in the gym and he/she will receive 5 bonus points.

Remember, not all fitness days are mile runs. Other fitness activities include, 10 minute run, jump rope fitness, relay run, 2 mile relay, and buddy run.

We will be running the mile run approximately every two weeks. When determining the ability portion of the grade, we refer to the Presidential Physical Fitness Testing used throughout the United States. Below is the standard for the 85th percentile for U.S. boys and girls. If you compare these standards to Garrett standards, your will notice that we are truly expecting far less than these scores. Yet, we are still awarding exemplary grades in our classes. We do encourage students to strive for excellence by achieving these national standards.

The P.E. staff would like everyone to be as active as they physically can be and we realize that at times it is necessary to adapt activities to meet the needs of students. If parents or guardians feel that their child should not dress out and participate in any activity, they must write an explanatory note. Please include your phone number for verification purposes. The student may then be given an assignment to complete in the library by the end of the class period. Parent notes will be accepted for a maximum of 3 days.
