Developmental Goal• Your own philosophy of education is
very important because it provides focus and emphasis for your teaching. Working to communicate your philosophy helps you to become aware of your own goals and values, which prepares you to integrate them with the goals and values directed by your school district and your community.
Objectives• Students will identify their own belief
system concerning education.
• Students will express their philosophy of education by writing a poem, developing a collage, writing an essay, or creating a brochure.
Materials Needed• Philosophy of Education Student
Assignment
• Philosophy of Education Rubric
Motivator (Anticipatory Set)• Imagine you are starting a brand new
school. You want to hire educators whose philosophies either reflect your own or are compatible with yours.
• What characteristics will those teachers have?
Procedure (Instructional Content)
• Think about your beliefs and use these to develop your philosophy.
• Questions for discussion:
• What is the purpose of education in the United States?
• How about in your classroom?
• What do you want your future students to be able to do or be, as a result of their experiences in your school?
• Why?
• What kinds of teaching approaches and strategies will most likely help your students meet these goals?
• What is the students role (what are the student’s responsibilities)?
• What is the teacher’s role in the classroom?
• What is the teacher’s role is working with parents and as a bridge to the community? (What are your expectations for teachers?)
• What is the teacher’s role in educational reform?
Closure
• The knowledge and experience you acquire as you proceed in your education and career will influence your philosophy.
