School and Education

Most Filipino children wanted to go to school but were not able to go to because there were limited schools. When the Americans came they built many schools. Now children must go to school from at least 5 to 12 years old.

Jobs

Many Filipinos have jobs like Americans. They work in stores, hotels, banks, airports, offices, factories, markets, and in factories they make food.

Entertainment/Games

Filipinos enjoy sports and games like baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, jacks, chess, and checkers.

Climate (Weather)

In the Philippines it only rains. It is very hot.

Money/Currency

A peso is less then a Canadian dollar. They have both paper money and coins. A U.S. dollar equalled one Canadian or 30 peso.

Food

Bibingka is a Christmas treat. It is made from mochi rice, coconut and is cooked on banana leaves. Aodobo is made with chicken, pork, garlic and soy sauce.

Shelter

Half of the Filipinos live in houses or apartments. Homes are like homes in America. Many Filipinos live in rural areas away from the city. Their homes are made out of wood. They even make roofs with palm leaves.

Transportation

In the Philippines they travel by boat, jeep, van, car, bikes, motorcycle, tricycle, truck, and scooter.

Clothing

Clothing is made from cotton, fibres, jusi and banana silk. It looks like dots, stripes, patterns, and stars. Men wear Barong togalog which is embroidered outer shirt untucked. It has collars, long sleeves, mid-thigh with side slits. Women wore heavily starched and butterfly-sleeved terno and matching long skirt.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN

Language spoken are Filipino (official based on Tagolog) and English. There are eight major dialects and they are Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Ilonggo, Waray, Pamango, and Pangasinan.

CELEBRATIONS

Sinulog Festival is a colourful festival in the Philippines. Every January devotional crucifixions are held during the Holy Week. Some Filipinos reenact the crucifixion of Jesus. Christmas is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the Philippines.

The special animal is a lion. The special bird is a eagle. The special plant is a bamboo.
